We arrived in Basel, the host city of Baselworld, in northwestern Switzerland.

This will be my first time attending Baselworld as a member of the media, and I will be joining forces with Takeshi Matsuyama and my senior editors to report on the atmosphere on site in the "Basel Diary."

Basel, a city on the border between Switzerland, France, and Germany, and also a starting point for water transport, has seen its economy and industry develop since the Middle Ages. Baselworld, which began in this city 102 years ago, is now at a turning point, as has been widely reported.

With permission from the Baselworld Secretariat, we have reproduced below the 2019 floor map of watch brands. This year's layout is as shown below, with the Swatch Group, one of the "Big 5," gone.

As Messe Basel straddles tram tracks, there are two entrances on the first floor. At "Halls 1.0," you'll be greeted by Bulgari and Tag Heuer as you pass through the entrance. At the other entrance, "1.0-Les Ateliers," emerging manufacturers and independent watchmakers have booths.

On the second floor, there are "Halls 1.0" and "1.0-Les Ateliers." The names of Japanese manufacturers are lined up.
