Watch Terminology Dictionary

A gear that overlaps with the barrel core. The rotation of the crown is transmitted via a crown wheel to wind the mainspring. Some automatic winding watches transmit the rotation of the rotor via an intermediate wheel. In the past, high-end watches had a bridge placed over the crown wheel. The teeth of the crown wheel and the ratchet wheel, which are sharp like canines, are called "wolf teeth" and were adopted in some pocket watches. Even today, this classic detail can be seen in movements made by Renaud & Papy, Christophe Claret, and Hajime Asaoka.
