Why The Citizen Attracts Watch Enthusiasts: Series and Models Coming in 2023

2024.02.22

The Citizen was launched in 1995. Now equipped with the Eco-Drive solar-powered system, its high precision and excellent metalworking technology continue to attract watch enthusiasts. Why is Citizen loved by so many people? We will introduce the charm of The Citizen in detail, along with the new models released in 2023.

The Citizen

The beauty of the manufacturer's flagship line, "The Citizen"

The Citizen

The Citizen, released in 1995, was limited to an annual production of 2000 units (1000 units of each model), and was the first in the watch industry to offer a 10-year free warranty, a serial number engraved on the case back, and a customer registration system, all of which helped to establish thorough after-sales service.

The Citizen is the flagship line among the many Citizen watch brands. Since its launch in 1995, the brand has been releasing simple, high-quality watches. With their luxurious design and high quality, The Citizen watches are loved by many executives.

Highly visible, universal dial design

This Citizen technology involves coating the front and back of the sapphire glass with a silicon compound to reduce light reflection and achieve approximately 99% transmittance. Furthermore, an anti-fouling film is added to improve durability and stain resistance.

The first feature of The Citizen watches is their dials, which are highly legible. The indices are multifaceted, making it possible to read the time from any angle. Furthermore, the cover glass is treated with a "clarity coating" that reduces light reflection.

The extremely simple dial features no unnecessary decoration. The Citizen values excellent visibility, ease of use, and a timeless beauty that can be worn by people of all ages.

The appeal of The Citizen is that it has a simple design yet a luxurious feel. Some Eco-Drive models use soft Japanese paper on the dial to create a luxurious feel that is uniquely Japanese.

Uncompromising finish that only a manufacture can provide

The Citizen is carefully assembled by Citizen's highly skilled and top technicians, the "Watch Assembly Meisters," at the Minami Shinshu Luxury Watch Workshop in Iida City, Nagano Prefecture.

Citizen is one of the world's leading "manufactures." A manufacture is a brand that can produce everything in-house, from parts to finished watches.

All Citizen watches are assembled at the Minami Shinshu Luxury Watch Workshop, where parts manufactured at Citizen watch factories are collected and assembled. Dust and dirt are thoroughly eliminated, and this workshop handles only the luxury models in the Citizen collection.

The Citizen watches are carefully assembled by "watch assembly masters" with exceptional skills, while case finishing, pressing, and polishing are handled by dedicated craftsmen.

Many craftsmen use their skills and experience to create beautiful, high-quality watches.

The Citizen focuses on practicality

The Citizen does not only focus on aesthetic beauty. They have developed high-precision watches to embody the Citizen watch philosophy of "keeping time accurately." Support such as long-term free warranties and free inspections is also a big attraction for those looking for a practical watch.

Extremely accurate timekeeping

The Citizen offers both mechanical and solar-powered "Eco-Drive" watches, both of which offer high accuracy.

The accuracy of their quartz watches is particularly astonishing. By using only carefully selected quartz oscillators and manufacturing them in-house, they have achieved high accuracy of ±5 seconds per year or ±1 second per year.

For models with an annual accuracy of ±5 seconds, the completed quartz crystal oscillator is left to rest for six months before its frequency characteristics are assessed. For models with an annual accuracy of ±1 second, the selection criteria are even stricter. An AT-cut quartz crystal oscillator is used, and its frequency is examined during the aging process to stabilize it, with only those with the least change over time being carefully selected.

Up to 10 years of free warranty and inspection

Citizen Owners Club

By registering with the Citizen Owners Club during the warranty period issued at the time of purchase, customers can receive free repairs for natural breakdowns for up to 10 years, and Citizen will also provide eligible customers with a free inspection service during the warranty period.
*If you are not registered with the Citizen Owners Club, you will receive a one-year manufacturer's warranty.

The Citizen offers up to 10 years of free warranty and inspection services. If you purchase a specific Citizen watch brand, including The Citizen, you can join the special Citizen Owners Club, which allows you to take advantage of the free warranty and inspection services.

If your watch is still within the warranty period, you can have it inspected free of charge even if there are no particular problems. This service involves a comprehensive check of the watch's health at the Citizen Watch factory, from its appearance to its basic operation and even a residual magnetism test for the movement.

If an internal part of the watch breaks, it can be repaired by a master watch assembler at the Minami Shinshu High-End Watch Workshop, where The Citizen watches are made. The Citizen spares no effort to ensure that their watches remain functional for as long as possible.

The Eco-Drive movement, with an annual accuracy of ±1 second, allows you to fully appreciate the technical prowess of Citizen watches. Operating for a year with only a one-second deviation, it is one of the most accurate movements in the industry. It shows the efforts of The Citizen, which has always strived to achieve even greater heights, focusing on the watch's primary role of telling time.

The black ruthenium-plated Cal. 0100 can be seen through the see-through case back, which is unusual for a quartz watch.

The Citizen Eco-Drive watches also come in a series with an annual accuracy of ±5 seconds. While this may seem less accurate than models with an annual accuracy of ±1 second, the accuracy of a typical quartz watch is about ±20 seconds per month, which translates to 240 seconds per year. You'll see that an annual accuracy of ±5 seconds is truly astonishing.

Currently, The Citizen has 16 current models, including a selection that incorporates traditional Japanese culture. With a few exceptions, they are also sold outside of designated stores, making this a recommended series for those who find it difficult to visit designated stores.

On November 9, 2023, the new "Ref. AQ4100-65W," limited to 500 pieces worldwide, will be released. Platinum foil is scattered on Japanese paper using the traditional technique of "sunakomaki," creating the beauty of falling snow.
