Grand Seiko, which released its first model in 1960, has been increasing its presence in the watch market every year. The range of its collection has also expanded, so it can be hard to decide which one to choose. In this article, we will introduce 13 recommended Grand Seiko models.

Grand Seiko Boutique Evolution 9

"Heritage Collection"

"Heritage" is a word that means tradition and legacy. Grand Seiko's Heritage Collection is made up of models that feature modern interpretations of notable masterpieces, such as the "44GS," released in 1967, which established the brand's design grammar, the "Seiko Style," and the "62GS," which was born in the 1960s and pushed the brand's practicality to the next level. While basic, its main features are its balanced, classic design, accuracy, and ease of viewing.

"Heritage Collection" Ref.SBGA211

The Ref. SBGA211 is a watch characterized by its delicate dial pattern. It was made by Shinshu Toki no Takumi Kobo, where Grand Seiko's Spring Drive movement is manufactured. The surrounding Hotaka region is covered in snow in winter, and in the cool, dry air, the wind-blown snow creates delicate wind patterns. This snow surface is expressed in the "snow-white pattern" of this watch.

Spring Drive is Seiko's "third movement." It is a unique mechanism developed by the company that combines high torque and high precision by using a mainspring as a power source like a mechanical watch, while regulating the speed with a quartz oscillator like a quartz watch. This watch is also equipped with the Spring Drive Cal. 9R65.

The bright titanium used for the case is also a Grand Seiko proprietary material. Lighter than stainless steel, it is also highly scratch-resistant and corrosion-resistant, making it a Grand Seiko watch you'll want to wear every day.

Grand Seiko "Heritage Collection" Ref.SBGA211
Automatic Spring Drive (Cal. 9R65). 30 jewels. Power reserve: approximately 72 hours. Bright titanium case (diameter 41mm, thickness 12.5mm). Water resistant to 10 bar. Price: 1,793,000 yen (tax included).

"Heritage Collection" Ref.SBGA375

The Ref. SBGA375 is one of the 44GS modern design models, a modern reinterpretation of the design of the 44GS, which was released in 1967. The shadows that reside in the case, which is composed of smooth surfaces that have been subjected to Zaratsu polishing, express the uniquely Japanese aesthetic sense.

The dial color is midnight blue. Depending on the light, it can appear black, making it easy to wear both on and off the job. Its simple yet highly functional design, including sharp indexes and hour and minute hands with excellent visibility, a date display at 3 o'clock, and a power reserve indicator at 7 o'clock, are typical Grand Seiko features.

The watch is equipped with the automatic Spring Drive movement, Cal. 9R65. It boasts the same high level of precision as a quartz watch, and is also magnetically and shock-resistant, as well as aesthetically pleasing. Another appealing feature of Spring Drive is the smooth movement of the second hand, which embodies the continuous flow of time.

"Heritage Collection" Ref.SBGX265

Along with mechanical and Spring Drive movements, the 9F quartz movement is Grand Seiko's signature movement.

In 1988, Grand Seiko released the 95GS, a quartz watch with an extremely high accuracy of ±10 seconds per year. Then, in 1993, they introduced the "ultimate" quartz Caliber 9F83, which offered more than just high accuracy. Since then, the 9F Quartz movement has become one of Grand Seiko's core movements. This 9F Quartz movement can be described as the ultimate because of its unique features that set it apart from other quartz movements, including a twin pulse control motor, backlash auto-adjust mechanism, instantaneous date change mechanism, and regulator switch.

The Ref. SBGX265 featured here is equipped with the compact 9F quartz movement, Cal. 9F62. The case measures just 37mm in diameter and 10mm thick, and combined with the basic design typical of the Heritage Collection, it doesn't stand out too much under a jacket cuff, making it perfect for business situations.

Another plus for users is that the game's list price is 297,000 yen, making it an affordable price range.

"Sports Collection"

Grand Seiko's sports collection offers high performance in a wide range of situations. It focuses on enhancing the inherent functionality of a wristwatch, and includes high-performance models such as chronographs and diver's watches.

"Sports Collection Spring Drive Chronograph GMT" Ref. SBGC253

This model features a dynamic design incorporating the brand's iconic lion. The solid, heavy case resembles a lion's claws, while the shiny white dial with its organic pattern resembles its mane. The case is made of lightweight, aesthetically pleasing bright titanium, reducing strain on the wrist when worn.

The movement is the Cal. 9R86, a Spring Drive movement with both chronograph and GMT functions. While it's a multi-function model with a power reserve indicator and date display, ease of use hasn't been overlooked. The chronograph pushers are large and easy to grip, and the counters at the 2 and 4 o'clock positions on the dial are designed to allow for easy checking of measurement results, even through the cuff. The 24-hour bezel and the tip of the GMT hand are both black, allowing for instant reading of the second time zone.

Grand Seiko "Sports Collection Spring Drive Chronograph GMT" Ref. SBGC253
Automatic Spring Drive (Cal. 9R86). 50 jewels. Power reserve: approximately 72 hours. Bright titanium case (diameter 44.5mm, thickness 16.8mm). Water resistant to 20 bar. Price: 1,793,000 yen (tax included).

"Sports Collection" Ref.SBGA461

This diver's watch is part of Grand Seiko's Sports Collection. Its bold black dial features three types of indexes: triangle, bar, and dot. These are filled with luminous paint for enhanced legibility and visibility. It features a thick hour hand and a minute hand long enough to reach the minute markers, making it easy to read the time even in dark waters. A date display at 3 o'clock ensures practicality for everyday use.

The 44.2mm case is crafted from stainless steel. While the base finish is hairline-polished, it also features polished areas, allowing for the distortion-free mirror finish characteristic of Zaratsu polishing. The unidirectional rotating bezel, engraved with a 60-minute scale, can be disassembled for after-sales service, allowing for the removal of any foreign matter that may have gotten inside the bezel.

The movement is an automatic Spring Drive type, which not only provides the high precision of a quartz watch, but also allows you to enjoy the smooth movement of the second hand.

"Sports Collection" Ref.SBGN027

The Ref. SBGN027 is equipped with the Cal. 9F86 quartz movement with a GMT function. It features a metal bezel with a 24-hour scale printed on it, a crown positioned at 4 o'clock to prevent contact with the back of the hand, and a bold black dial, giving it a sporty feel. Its water resistance of 20 bar will make it a valuable addition to any watch that frequently involves work with water.

The Cal. 9F86 also features a "four-axis independent guide structure." This allows the four hands (hour, minute, second, and GMT) to rotate independently without interfering with each other, allowing the hour hand to be adjusted without stopping the watch. This means that the high precision of the 9F quartz movement is not compromised even when adjusting the time in a different time zone. This model embodies Grand Seiko's commitment to "striving for the ultimate quartz."

"Elegance Collection"

The Elegance Collection is practical yet elegant, with a slim case and a simple yet elegant design, showcasing the brand's tireless pursuit of elegance.

"Elegance Collection" Ref.SBGY007

This slim dress watch is equipped with a manual-winding Spring Drive movement. The cool blue embossed dial is inspired by the natural phenomenon of "Omiwatari." Omiwatari is an icy mountain range that forms in midwinter when the frozen surface of Lake Suwa rises from the lake's surface in midwinter, near Shinshu Toki no Takumi Kobo, where Spring Drive models are manufactured. The pattern on the dial reflects light, expressing its mystical quality.

The stainless steel case features an overall rounded design. The flowing lines from the dual-curved sapphire crystal to the bezel and lugs create an elegant impression. At 10.2mm thick, the case is thin enough to fit under the cuff of a business suit. The see-through case back allows you to see the power reserve indicator, as well as the brushed bridges, red rubies, and blued screws.

The strap is made of crocodile leather with blue stitching and is fitted with a folding buckle, making it safe and easy to put on and take off from the wrist.

"Elegance Collection" Ref.SBGY013

Grand Seiko specializes in embossed dials inspired by natural scenes. One of the most popular is the "Omiwatari" (divine crossing) design used in this model. Omiwatari is a natural phenomenon that occurs during a limited period in midwinter, when the thick ice on Lake Suwa expands and contracts repeatedly in response to temperature fluctuations, eventually rising with a loud noise.

This model, which is based on the theme of the silvery crossing of the gods, features a dial with a pattern resembling the surface of a frozen lake, which sparkles delicately in the sunlight.

The elegant case features smooth curves and measures 38.5mm in diameter and 10.2mm thick, making it easy to fit under the cuff of a suit.

It is equipped with a hand-wound Spring Drive movement, and the see-through back allows you to see the delicate hairline-finished bridge and the power reserve indicator placed on it.

"Evolution 9 Collection"

Grand Seiko's "Evolution 9 Collection" is a collection that was released in 2020, and is a watch made in accordance with the "Evolution 9 style."

The Evolution 9 Style is an evolution of the Seiko Style, and its design philosophy is based on the evolution of aesthetics, visibility, and wearability.

"Evolution 9 Collection" Ref.SLGC001

Grand Seiko's first mechanical chronograph, announced in 2023, is equipped with the Caliber 9SC5, a high-beat movement that vibrates at 10 vibrations per second. The dual impulse escapement and twin barrels improve power transmission efficiency, providing a power reserve of approximately 72 hours, while the free-sprung balance wheel ensures stable accuracy over long periods of time.

The chronograph mechanism, controlled by a column wheel and vertical clutch, is located on the dial side to allow for greater design flexibility and durability.

The exterior design adopts the Evolution 9 style, which evolves the Seiko style and further enhances aesthetics, visibility, and wearability. The blue dial features a pattern reminiscent of the majestic rock face of Mount Iwate, as seen from Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi, where Grand Seiko 9S mechanical watches are manufactured.

The case is made of bright titanium and the bezel is made of ceramic, making it lightweight and scratch-resistant. It is a mechanical chronograph that is typical of Grand Seiko, combining design and ease of use.

"Evolution 9 Collection" Ref. SLGH005

This popular model is known by the nickname "White Birch." The organic, molded pattern on the dial was inspired by the white birch forests that grow in abundance near the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi, where Grand Seiko mechanical models are manufactured. The dynamic shadows that change depending on the light are captivating.

The exterior design uses the Evolution 9 style. High visibility thanks to the three-dimensional indexes and hands, and a stable fit created by a low center of gravity and wide lug width enhance practicality.

The movement used in this model is the Cal. 9SA5, an automatic mechanical movement boasting a vibration frequency of 10 vibrations per second. It features a dual impulse escapement, twin barrels, a free-sprung balance, and other mechanisms, while remaining slim. Another highlight is the intricate decoration, featuring motifs of mountain ridges and flowing rivers.

This diver's watch incorporates Grand Seiko's unique design grammar, the "Evolution 9 Style," an evolution of the "Grand Seiko Style." The dial, which excels in visibility and readability, features a embossed design that expresses the powerful force of ocean currents surrounding Japan, including the Kuroshio Current. This is a typical Grand Seiko watch, which combines a tool-like diver's watch with Japanese nature to create an emotionally rich design.

The dynamic case, which skillfully combines curves and straight lines, is made of bright titanium, which is corrosion-resistant, lightweight, hypoallergenic, and has a shining white aesthetic. The unidirectional rotating bezel is set with a scratch-resistant ceramic insert.

The Caliber 9RA5 used in this model is a highly accurate automatic Spring Drive movement with an average monthly deviation of ±10 seconds. It is thinner than conventional automatic Spring Drive movements, and the use of a dual-size barrel provides a long power reserve of approximately 120 hours.
