A thorough explanation of the Rolex Sky-Dweller! A timepiece that combines high performance with elegant design

2026.01.31

The Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller is a collection that Rolex has been offering since 2012. It features highly practical functions such as a second time zone display mechanism and an annual calendar, and its operation is unique. We will introduce the highlights of this collection and the current models.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller

Rolex Sky-Dweller's Features

The literal translation of Sky-Dweller is "dweller in the air." It is said to have been "designed for people who fly around the globe." We will explain the Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller (hereinafter referred to as Sky-Dweller), focusing mainly on its functions.

Second time zone display mechanism

One of the features of the Sky-Dweller is its "second time zone display mechanism." Speaking of a mechanism for displaying a second time zone different from the current location, the style of the "GMT-Master II," also part of the current Rolex collection, may be well-known. However, instead of a GMT hand, the Sky-Dweller displays the time at home using a rotating disc with a 24-hour scale set in the center of the dial and a small, inverted red triangle.

The disc displays the time in 24 hours, making it easy for users to distinguish between day and night, a feature that will be useful for users who frequently travel to areas with large time differences.

Saros Annual Calendar

The month is displayed in a small window around the index. For example, in this photo, it shows September.

Another feature of the Sky-Dweller is its annual calendar. Rolex calls it the "Saros Annual Calendar," likening it to the sun and planets. The annual calendar automatically distinguishes between months with 30 and 31 days. This means that, except for the last day of February, there is no need to manually correct the calendar as long as the watch is running.

Other brands also produce annual calendar models, but Rolex uses a patented annual calendar developed for the Sky-Dweller.

The month display is also unique. It uses a small window located on the outside of each index to display the month. For example, if it is January, the window at 1 o'clock will turn red. The date is linked to the local time and is displayed in a small window at 3 o'clock.

Ring Command System

The Ring Command system installed in the Sky-Dweller is also a patented mechanism unique to Rolex. By changing the position of the bezel, you can select the function you want to set with the crown. In other words, by changing the position of the bezel, you can operate each of the functions installed in the Sky-Dweller.

When the bezel is in its normal position, unlock it and turn the crown clockwise to wind the mainspring. Pull the crown out from this position, move the bezel three clicks toward 9 o'clock from the neutral position, and turn the crown; the 24-hour display disc and minute hand will rotate. This allows you to set the home time. If you move the bezel two clicks toward 9 o'clock and then turn the crown, the hour hand will move independently. If you turn the crown with the bezel moved one click toward 9 o'clock, the date disc will change. Note that the month display cannot be changed by itself; you must change the month by advancing the date.

In addition to being easy to operate, the fluted bezel adds an elegant touch to this collection. This bezel design, with its continuous mountain-shaped cuts, is a part that can be said to symbolize Rolex.

High-performance automatic movement

Since its introduction in 2012, the Sky-Dweller has been equipped with the automatic movement Caliber 9001, said to be one of Rolex's most complicated movements.

Furthermore, in 2023, the collection will be revamped with the Caliber 9002, the successor to the Caliber 9001. The movement's rotor uses highly wear-resistant ball bearings. It also incorporates Rolex's innovative technologies, such as the Paraflex shock absorber, which boasts excellent shock resistance, and the Parachrom hairspring, which provides anti-magnetic properties.
