A review of the latest "Full Metal" G-SHOCK model, the GMW-B5000D-2JF, that will make you want to collect it!

This is a wearable review of the latest Full Metal 5000 model, the GMW-B5000D-2JF, released in March 2024. Each variation features an attractive design, and the affordable price makes this collection a must-have even if you already own one. With each new release, it's hard to keep your wallet open.

Wearing the G-SHOCK "GMW-B5000D-2JF"!

　The GMW-B5000 was released as part of the "full metal" 5000 series in 2018. 18 marked the 35th anniversary of the birth of G-SHOCK. In this milestone year, the GMW-B5000, which inherited the design of the original G-SHOCK "DW-5000C," also known as the "origin," but with a stainless steel exterior, was released and quickly became a popular new classic. The series' popularity is evident from the fact that its variations have been increasing year by year.

　I also bought the GMW-B5000D-1JF, which has been a long-selling model since its release in 18. It was also my first G-SHOCK. I still treasure it to this day. Perhaps because of this nostalgia factor, whenever a new Full Metal 5000 model comes out, I can't help but check it out. According to a PR representative from Casio Computer, the case and bracelet have not changed, so the new model is positioned as a cosmetic change. However, sometimes the "Recrystallized Series" and releases models with added colors such as Bordeaux and yellow gold depending on the IP, this collection always has an exciting lineup. It would be fun to collect the different variations, but fortunately, through my work on "Chronos Japan" and webChronos, I have had the opportunity to get an impression of these new variations. Incidentally, at the end of last year, the rainbow-colored "GMW-B5000BPC-1JF" I gave my impressions of the Full Metal 5000 series. There's no need for me to write my own impressions, but the Full Metal 5000 series has a charm that makes me want to pick one up. This time, a representative from Casio Computer suggested the latest model, the GMW-B3D-2JF, released in March 2024, for my impressions, so I jumped at the chance without hesitation.

Different variations that will make you want to collect them all

　In March 2024, the Full Metal Series released the GMW-B5000D-2JF and the GM-B2100AD, both of which are made with a metallic blue coating created by vapor deposition.GM-B2100ADMy impressions of the film were recently published, so I highly recommend you read them.

　Now, when I tried on the GMW-B5000D-2JF, which has a charm that I can't help but be drawn to, I felt the familiar weight and bracelet, and enjoyed the LCD display, which had a blue hue that changed depending on the light source. When I compared the case and bracelet with the GMW-B5000D-1JF that I own, I couldn't see any difference (the difference in the number of links is due to my recent successful diet and weight loss).

　The specs are the same as the previous model, so there's not much difference between this and my current model. However, the blue accents created by the vapor deposition process really make it stand out on the wrist. The vibrant color adds a special touch to the Full Metal 5000. While blue dials have become a standard color for wristwatches, they don't seem to be common for digital watches (and the combination of a metallic case and bracelet with a metallic LCD display is quite rare). While not flashy, this kind of subtle, special design is risky. This is because this model's subtle yet striking metallic blue character, combined with its affordable price of 84,700 yen (tax included), makes it a G-SHOCK that's easy to collect.

　Incidentally, unlike the GM-B2100AD, this model has a smaller area that is decorated with blue. As a result, I was concerned that the blue would not be as strong as in the promotional images, and that the design would be nothing particularly noteworthy (I had already done an impression of the Full Metal 5000, so when reviewing a model that is the only difference other than the display, it would be difficult to "spot the differences"). However, this model has the vivid colors that the promotional images show, and it was a lot of fun to look at. However, as mentioned above, it can appear dark depending on the light source. However, the LCD display was not difficult to see under strong light sources such as sunlight. It also has an LED backlight, so it is easy to read in dark places.

A heavy exterior

　Of course, the appeal of this watch isn't just the metallic blue, but also the solid exterior that's typical of a full-metal G-SHOCK. At 49.3mm long and 43.2mm wide, it's relatively large for a modern men's watch, which tends to be around 40mm in diameter. Also, because it's made of stainless steel, it weighs 144g with the links removed (I've forgotten how many links were removed). It has a solid feel that's different from a plastic case.

　The case and bracelet are a combination of polished and satin finishes, with the bracelet having a larger satin finish and the end pieces having a larger polished finish. Scratches on the polished surface are somewhat noticeable. However, I think that G-SHOCK is best suited to its character when used vigorously on a daily basis. You'll grow attached to a G-SHOCK with its own unique scratches.

The many functions enhance the appeal of G-SHOCK

　One of the attractions of G-SHOCK is that it has many functions beyond just the hour, minute, and second display. This model also comes equipped with Multiband 6, a radio-controlled watch that supports standard radio waves from six locations: Japan, North America, Europe, and China; a world time function that displays the time in 39 time zones around the world and automatically adjusts for daylight saving time; a stopwatch; an alarm; a full auto-calendar; and the ability to switch between 12-hour and 24-hour display. While you won't make full use of all of these features, the multi-function feature is sure to appeal to gadget lovers.

　Previously, these functions had to be operated using push buttons attached to the case. However, the Full Metal 5000 series is equipped with a Mobile Link/App Link function. By downloading the dedicated app "CASIO WATCHES" to a compatible mobile phone and connecting via Bluetooth, you can set world time, alarms, and time. The interface is quite excellent, and if you normally use a smartphone, you will find it intuitive to use. This is a welcome feature for someone like me who found the push buttons a little difficult to press.

Recommended as your first G-SHOCK!
