We'll take a closer look at some of the new models from 2024 that caught our eye. The one that caught my eye was Seiko's Seiko 5 Sports SNXS. The EDC (Everyday Carry) concept, which translates to "a companion you can carry with you every day," is no joke.

Which new 2024 model did watch writer Nojima Tsubasa find most interesting?
This year, a wide variety of watches were announced by various companies. Looking back, there were many surprising new products that were unforeseen a year ago, such as high complications equipped with ultra-complicated mechanisms and models with unique designs. Seeing these makes us realize that the potential of watches is still in its infancy, and at the same time, it also raises expectations that they will continue to evolve even further.
So, among the attractive lineup of new 2024 models, the one that caught my eye the most was Seiko's "Seiko 5 Sports SNXS" series. It's a bit confusing, but this model inherits the design code of the "SNXS model," which the company developed as part of the Seiko 5 series, and is the new, current Seiko 5 Sports. Other than the day-date calendar, it has no other notable features, and the gently curved case lines that follow the original SNXS model, as well as the dial with its line indexes, are not particularly eye-catching or unique. Still, I find this model particularly appealing.

Seiko's Conscience for Mechanical Watch Beginners
With its stainless steel case, simple dial, and versatile movement, Cal. 4R36, it's undeniable that this watch comes in a rather ordinary package. However, on the flip side, this translates into a watch that's uncomplicated and easy to use, regardless of time, place, or user. What's more, the approximately 37mm case size is perfect for Japanese people with relatively slim wrists, it's water resistant to 10 bar for worry-free wear in bad weather, and it comes with a comfortable bracelet. Looking around, there aren't many watches that combine all of these features.
The company describes the concept of this watch as EDC (Everyday Carry), meaning "a companion to carry with you every day." To achieve this, the fewer negative aspects, the better. With that in mind, this watch, which eliminates stress as much as possible, truly embodies the stated concept. Its simple design makes it suitable for a wider range of situations than the diver's watch-style "SKX" series or the military-style "Field" series, both of which are part of the Seiko 5 Sports line.
Not only is it simple and easy to use, but its attractive price of around 50,000 yen is also appealing. Compared to a few years ago, watch prices have skyrocketed dramatically, making this a truly reasonable price. It's certainly a breath of fresh air for those weary of the constant price hikes, but more than anything, coupled with the aforementioned concept, it's a model I highly recommend as a first watch for those just starting to develop an interest in mechanical watches. Mechanical watches tend to be viewed as hobby items. To maintain or expand the market, it must first attract the interest of new demographics. This accessible, high-quality watch could sow the seeds for the future and serve as the foundation for increasing the number of mechanical watch fans. In that sense, this model is significant.
A unique atmosphere that shows continuity with the original
Another appealing feature of this work is that, while it is based on a previous work, it does not simply copy the shape. As mentioned above, there is an original model that inspired this work. The original SNXS model is delicate and as light as a dead leaf compared to this one, but strangely, the two models have more than just a common design; they also give off a sense of a blood connection. I'm not sure if this is an appropriate analogy, but perhaps it's like the difference between the Ref. 16200 and Ref. 116200 of the Rolex Datejust. It has become more luxurious, but the roots remain the same, and you can sense a continuity between the two.

During my student days, I used to wear a Seiko 5 (not the SNXS model) on my wrist, and every single moment of that time came back to me vividly.
For example, have you ever been in a residential area at dusk and heard the warm smell of cooking wafting from a house, and suddenly been reminded of your parents back home? Or perhaps a melody you happen to hear on the radio awakens the passion you once had studying for an exam. Memories and something else are inextricably linked, even if we don't realize it. In the same way, the Seiko 5 Sports in front of me unconsciously reminds me of my past experiences owning a Seiko 5. This watch exudes an intangible atmosphere that evokes a sense of continuity with the original. While there are now many reproduction models, including those by other companies, it feels like many of them are too perfect. In that respect, this watch is a rare find.
A daily companion that lets you enjoy a relaxed watch life
For this reason, the 2024 new model that caught my eye the most was the Seiko 5 Sports SNXS series. In fact, after my impressions in April, I personally purchased the ivory dial Ref. SBSA257 and have been enjoying it ever since. What I said in my impressions back then still stands today.
Sometimes it's good to forget about things like functionality and catalog specifications, just enjoy the excitement that arises when you wear a watch, and enjoy a casual relationship with it.
