Breitling, the pioneer of mechanical chronographs
Breitling is a watch brand founded in Switzerland by Léon Breitling in 1884. Since its founding, the company has focused on watchmaking as a timekeeping device, and has established itself as a pioneer in chronograph watches in particular, through the development of innovative mechanisms and their adoption in military equipment.
Breitling is also a brand with a strong presence in the field of pilot's watches. As military demand increased in the 1930s, the brand began to focus on developing precise, durable, and highly legible chronograph watches, and this achievement led to the creation of famous collections such as the Chronomat and Navitimer.
When discussing the brand's history, it is impossible to ignore its contribution to the creation of styling for chronograph watches, which were originally timekeeping instruments. In particular, the Premier, which was designed with a stylish and elegant design in mind to reach a wider audience, and the Chronomat, which appeared as a fashionable mechanical chronograph in an era when quartz watches were at their peak, can be said to embody Breitling's forward-looking watchmaking.
Naturally, the brand's current lineup also reflects this pioneering technical expertise and its cutting-edge watchmaking. Not only are they highly practical, but their line-up combines functional beauty with modern fashion, making them an appealing presence that can create a sophisticated yet sophisticated look for the wrist of a man in his 40s.
5 Breitlings Recommended for Men in Their 40s
This time, we have carefully selected five models from each of Breitling's core collections that we recommend for men in their 40s.
Chronomat B01 42, Ref. EB0134101M1E1
The Chronomat is Breitling's flagship collection. It was first introduced in its current style in 1984, the year the brand celebrated its 100th anniversary. After undergoing numerous upgrades, it is now an elegant, all-purpose sports watch suitable for a wide range of uses, on land, sea, and air.

Automatic winding (Cal. 01). 47 jewels. 28,800 vph. Power reserve approximately 70 hours. Ti case (diameter 42mm, thickness 15.1mm). 200m water resistant. 1,765,500 yen (tax included).
The Ref. EB0134101M1E1 we picked out features an anthracite-colored dial and a bold yet functional aesthetic. The rider tabs on the four sides of the bezel, which have been carried over from the 1984 model, and the Rouleaux bracelet are design features that were reintroduced in the 2020 update, making this a classic model that is instantly recognizable as a Chronomat.
Another feature of this watch is the use of titanium for the case material. Its lightness contrasts with its heavy appearance, contributing to an excellent wearing comfort. The case diameter is not too large at 42mm, and its monochrome appearance makes it an easy choice for a watch for everyday use.
The Cal. 01 movement that powers this watch was created in 2009 as the brand's first in-house automatic chronograph movement. It is no exaggeration to say that it is a step ahead in Breitling's history, and it offers practical functions such as a power reserve of approximately 70 hours, quarter-second measurement, and a calendar function that can be operated at any time.
Navitimer B01 Chronograph 43, Ref. AB0138241C1A1
The Navitimer, which inherits Breitling's history as a master of pilot's watches, is also a suitable addition to the collection for men in their 40s. With a bidirectional rotating bezel and aviation slide rule, its tool-like appearance not only boasts high practicality, but also has a strong appeal to men.

Automatic movement (Cal. 01). 47 jewels. 28,800 vph. Power reserve approximately 70 hours. Stainless steel case (diameter 43mm, thickness 13.6mm). Water resistant to 3 bar. Price: 1,061,500 yen (tax included).
The Ref. AB0138241C1A1 features an ice blue dial, one of the current watch trends. Its design, featuring a flattened rotating slide rule and a domed sapphire crystal, maintains the traditional style of the Navitimer while maintaining a slim appearance. The case and bracelet, with their alternate polished and satin finishes, also create a sophisticated impression.
The movement is the Cal. 01, which has become widely used not only in Chronomat but also in Navitimers. The transparent case back of this model allows you to enjoy the movement of the column wheel and its functional beauty.
In addition to the ice blue color, the dial has a radial finish that reduces the sense of tooling, making this a model that meets the modern demand for fashion. Combined with the impressive case size of 43mm in diameter, it is expected to be active with a wide range of fashion styles.
Navitimer B01 Chronograph 46, Ref. AB0137211C1P1
Also from the Navitimer series, we selected the Ref. AB0137211C1P1 with a blue dial.

Automatic movement (Cal. 01). 47 jewels. 28,800 vph. Power reserve approximately 70 hours. Stainless steel case (diameter 46mm, thickness 13.9mm). Water resistant to 3 bar. Price: 1,061,500 yen (tax included).
The appeal of this watch lies in its large case size. The 46mm diameter strongly expresses the pilot's watch design, which emphasizes legibility, and is sure to enhance the romance of owning a tool watch. It will also be an appealing piece for men who have been through the boom in "big, thick" watches. The blue and white dial, meanwhile, creates a slightly retro feel, yet strikes an exquisite balance that never feels outdated.
The alligator leather strap is a rich brown with a yellow lining and white stitching, giving the Navitimer a chic look.
Incidentally, many Navitimers equipped with the current Cal. 01 and Cal. 02 movements feature a wing logo at the 12 o'clock position, rather than Breitling's brand logo resembling the letter "B." This design was revived in the 2020 update, and indicates that the watch is the official timepiece of AOPA (International Owners and Pilots Association), the world's largest pilots' club.
Avenger B01 Chronograph 44, Ref. AB0147101A1X1
The Avenger, developed for jet pilots, is a high-performance watch designed to adapt to harsher environments, with a water resistance of 300m. The original Chrono Avenger, which appeared in 2001, is the collection that stands out as being particularly modern among Breitling's watches.

Automatic movement (Cal. 01). 47 jewels. 25,200 vph. Power reserve approximately 70 hours. Stainless steel case (diameter 44mm, thickness 15.2mm). Water resistant to 300m. Price: 1,298,000 yen (tax included).
The Ref.AB0147101A1X1 has a panda-like appearance with a black inset dial, and its sand color emphasizes its fashionable side. The strap is made of calfskin leather that matches the color of the dial, adding a military touch to the city style of those in their 40s.
Another appealing feature of this watch is the high level of perfection it offers as a pilot's watch, something the Avenger is proud of. The stainless steel bezel, which enhances its functional beauty, features large rider tabs and eight screws on the side for improved operability. Furthermore, the square pushers and the large crown with its grid-like grooves make it easy to operate, even while wearing gloves.
The movement used in this model is Cal. 01, which maintains high water resistance while allowing you to enjoy its mechanism and drive through the transparent case back.
"Premier B09 Chronograph 40" Ref.AB0930D31L1P1
The Premier, meaning "first" in French, is an elegant chronograph watch that first appeared in 1943 and was relaunched in 2018 as a timeless collection that retains its elegance while offering modern performance.
One of the attractions of the Premier is its wide range of colors. We chose the Ref. AB0930D31L1P1 as a model that easily demonstrates this appeal. The entire dial, including the inset dial, is colored pistachio green, making this a distinctive watch.

Manual winding (Cal. B09). 28 jewels. 28,800 vph. Power reserve approximately 70 hours. Stainless steel case (diameter 40mm, thickness 13mm). Water resistant to 10 bar. Price: 1,193,500 yen (tax included).
Of course, the vintage design, typical of the Premier, is a notable feature. The bicompax dial features Arabic numerals and syringe-shaped hands, all of which are covered by a box sapphire crystal. Its understated, tool-like appearance gives it a charm that is different from that of the Chronomat or Navitimer.
The case has an elegant design that matches the face, and the gold-brown alligator strap adds a touch of elegance to the overall watch. The movement is the hand-wound, non-date Cal. B09. Because it does not have a rotor, the mechanism can be viewed from the case back.
