A wearable review of the latest MR-G Frogman, released on April 22, 2025. Why is it said to be even fresher than the first model, the MRG-BF1000R, released in 2023?

G-SHOCK "MRG-BF1000RG" Wear Review

The highly popular Frogman model, built with the same high-end MR-G quality as the flagship MR-G series, was released in 2023 as the MRG-BF1000R. Since then, the MR-G Frogman has expanded its lineup, including limited edition models, and the MRG-BF1000RG reviewed here is one of them. While the only difference from previous models is the appearance, the new case and strap colors give the MR-G Frogman a new appeal.

Fresh colors inspired by Goliath frogs

While retaining its distinctive asymmetrical form, the exterior parts have been divided into 76 pieces, allowing for thorough polishing of even the smallest details. At the same time, it also boasts excellent shock resistance and 200m of ISO-compliant water resistance. The MR-G Frogman has earned a reputation among core G-SHOCK fans for its combination of finish and performance befitting a top-of-the-line series. Debuting in March 2023, a limited edition model based on the Frogman's first yellow version, the DW-6300-9, was released shortly thereafter. The following year, in 2024, a model with a titanium bracelet was added, steadily expanding the lineup. The latest addition to the series is the MRG-BF1000RG.

The arrival of the MR-G Frogman was certainly a shock, but in terms of design, the MRG-BF1000RG seems to be overwhelmingly superior in terms of freshness.

The first model, the MRG-BF1000R, was black with a blue accent, evocative of the ocean, as befits a diver's model. The MRG-BF1000B, released in 2024, also featured red, G-SHOCK's key color. Both models had a look befitting the G-SHOCK and Frogman brands.

However, the new model replaces the titanium case with a silver color. The strap is colored khaki, inspired by the Goliath frog, the world's largest frog, and the second hand and the mode hand at 3 o'clock on the dial are colored orange, further enhancing the impression of a tool watch. Since my first G-SHOCK was the green DW-6000CJ, I tend to favor G-SHOCKs in green and khaki colors, but khaki, which has a strong military and outdoor feel, suits the massive G-SHOCK design well. While maintaining the performance of a diver's watch, the incorporation of what Casio calls "colors and designs that stimulate the adventurous spirit of adults" has broadened the scope of the Frogman's design.

The MRG-BF1000RG has a bold design update, with the titanium case now silver instead of the previous black, and the strap now khaki. The second hand and mode hand feature orange accents, giving the watch a look reminiscent of the Madmaster and Madman.

Durasoft band for a secure fit

Just one year ago, I reviewed the MRG-BF1000B, which features a titanium bracelet, for webChronos' review project (article:http://www.webchronos.net/features/111989/). Meanwhile, the MRG-BF1000RG, like the first MR-G Frogman, is a model equipped with a Durasoft (fluoro rubber) strap. I remember that the titanium bracelet, with its short H-link pitch, was lightweight, fit well to the wrist, and was very comfortable to wear, but this Durasoft band also provides a high level of comfort.

The DuraSoft band is made of fluorine rubber. The strap is thick, but its soft texture ensures a secure fit around the wrist. The strap can be easily removed by pressing the push button on the case back and removing the pin on the side, making it easy to clean off oils and dirt.

The Durasoft band is thick and feels very durable, but despite its sturdy appearance, it has a very flexible texture. Moreover, despite the case being quite large at 56mm long and 49.7mm wide, the joint between the case and strap has a wide range of movement, so there is no gap between the watch and the wrist, and it fits snugly to the wrist as if it were custom-made. In other words, the watch will not slip off even if you move your arm vigorously. Of course, like the previous model, the case is made of titanium, so it is surprisingly light despite its massive appearance. Another appeal of this watch is that it does not feel bothersome even when worn for long periods of time.

MG_R_Side

The joint between the case and strap is highly movable, allowing the strap to fit snugly even on those with thin wrists, ensuring a comfortable fit. G-SHOCK pays close attention to the angle of the case and strap even for its regular models, and this same attention to detail has been applied to the MR-G.

The operability of the push buttons and crown has also been carefully considered.

Based on a professional diver's watch, the watch's operation is also designed with the user in mind. The four push buttons are large and easy to press, but they require a firm press before any functions can be activated, eliminating the risk of accidental operation during activities. The screw-down crown not only allows you to set the local time by pulling it out one notch and the home time by pulling it out two notches, but also intuitively sets the time forward and backward by turning the crown forward and backward.

MG-R_SideUP

The large push buttons are easy to press, and the cylindrical parts surrounding them prevent accidental operation, ensuring high operability, as is typical of a model based on the MASTER OF G.

Another unique and useful feature is the hand retraction function, which is also used in other G-SHOCK models. On models with many dial components, this function temporarily moves the hands to make the sub-dial easier to see. On this model, too, operating the push button at 10 o'clock moves the hour and minute hands to a position where they don't overlap with the sub-dial, making them easier to read. This is especially useful when you want to check the second time zone display at 7-8 o'clock.

MG_R_Front

The hand retraction function allows the hour and minute hands to move by pressing the push button at 10 o'clock, making it easier to read the in-dial display. It's a simple function, but it's convenient for a watch like this one, which has many components.

Of course, the core G-SHOCK features, such as shock resistance and ISO-compliant 200m diving water resistance, are inherited from the existing MR-G Frogman. Therefore, it can be worn safely not only for everyday use but also for outdoor activities. While maintaining these high basic performance features, the greatest feature of this model is the incorporation of a truly fresh color scheme for a model bearing the Frogman name.

When the MR-G Frogman was announced, I hoped that a model would be released with a color scheme that followed the first Frogman model, the DW-6300, which was released in 1993. This was unexpectedly fulfilled with a limited edition version based on the DW-6300-9, but I was curious as to whether new colors would be added to the MR-G Frogman after that. What was ultimately announced was a model featuring a khaki color that evokes the "Land G" models such as the Mudmaster and Mudman. It was a surprise design, but after holding the actual model, I felt that this color scheme was actually what was wanted for the Frogman, given its massive design.
