A wide variety of multi-functional models, brand icons, and new releases of timeless classics

This time, we'll be introducing a selection of masterpieces from the new 2025 watches priced under ¥50. Because it's difficult to define what constitutes a "masterpiece," we've taken into consideration "high performance, including not only functionality but also comfort," "emphasis on each manufacturer's strengths and characteristics," and "suitability for a wide range of occasions." Advances in various technologies, including processing, have raised the bar for low-priced products, resulting in a range full of attractive models. Each of the selected models boasts unique appeal, including high basic performance such as multiple functions and a long power reserve, a comfortable wearing experience thanks to the use of titanium, the use of parts and techniques that enhance the appearance, a unique design, and refinements of timeless classics.

We have also included the reasons for selecting each model, so we hope that by using these as a reference and taking an overview of each model, you will be able to help you choose your next watch.

Seiko Astron "Nexter GPS Solar Dual Time Chronograph" Ref. SBXC175

Seiko "Astron Nexter GPS Solar Dual Time Chronograph" Ref. SBXC175

This is a high-end model of the Astron Nexter, a multi-function model that incorporates the functions that modern businessmen want in a wristwatch. It is also a fierce battleground where Japanese manufacturers are releasing their leading models, and each company's technology is poured into the exterior design as well.

This year, the high-end model "Nexter GPS Solar Dual Time Chronograph" was added to the Seiko Astron "Nexter" collection, which combines functionality, modern styling, and a lightweight, comfortable fit. Seiko Astron and its Nexter models were selected because they are a widely supported collection that meets the needs of not only watch enthusiasts but also those looking for a highly functional model for business situations.

The Astron Nexter is designed to support the next generation of leaders, and is packed with features to support the business world, including solar power generation to prevent battery issues, world time to support business dealings around the world, and GPS reception that not only automatically adjusts to the correct time but also sets the watch to the local time when traveling abroad.

Seiko "Astron Nexter GPS Solar Dual Time Chronograph" Ref. SBXC175

Seiko Astron "Nexter GPS Solar Dual Time Chronograph" Ref. SBXC175
GPS solar (Cal. 5X83). 14 jewels. Approximately 2 years of operation on a full charge (power save mode). Ti case (diameter 44.1 mm, thickness 14.4 mm). 10 bar water resistance. 352,000 yen (tax included). Scheduled for release in May 2025. (Inquiries) Seiko Watch Customer Service Tel. 0120-061-012

The Ref. SBXC175 we selected this time is notable for its refined appearance, which was already excellent. A notable feature is that it is the first in the collection to feature a sapphire crystal bezel, adding a glossy finish, a three-dimensional feel, and a look that changes with the light. The titanium case and bracelet, which feature both polished and satin finishes, also add a stylish touch that matches a suit.

Japanese manufacturers have many multi-function models like this one, equipped with automatic time adjustment and solar power generation, and these models are competing fiercely. For this reason, Seiko has applied its technological expertise to the Astron Nexter to improve its appeal. This model is at the forefront of this trend, so be sure to check it out in stores.

The Citizen "AQ4100-57E"

Citizen "The Citizen" Ref.AQ4100-57E

The Citizen "AQ4100-57E"
Solar-powered Eco-Drive (Cal. A060). Runs for approximately 1.5 years on a full charge (power save mode). Ti case (diameter 38.3 mm, thickness 12.2 mm). Water resistant to 10 bar. 418,000 yen (tax included). (Inquiries) Citizen Customer Watch Consultation Center Tel. 0120-78-4807

The Citizen's three-hand models are informal watches with a very classic design, and new models are added every year that maintain that style while incorporating new methods of expression into the dial. From this perspective, the Citizen three-hand model collection itself is a masterpiece worthy of being inducted into the hall of fame, but the model we are featuring this time has been selected because it adds an appeal that traditional Citizen models did not have.

The Citizen "AQ4100-57B"
A white dial version was also released at the same time. Eco-Drive (Cal. A060). TI case (diameter 38.3mm, thickness 12.2mm). 10 bar water resistance. 418,000 yen (tax included). (Inquiries) Citizen Customer Watch Consultation Center Tel. 0120-78-4807

The Citizen, which is equipped with the light-powered Eco-Drive Cal. A060, requires a dial that allows light to pass through in order to generate power, and materials such as polycarbonate and washi paper have been used for this purpose. Dials made from washi paper, in particular, have a unique soft texture, which is one of the appeals of the Citizen. However, it has been difficult to use materials like metal, which block and reflect light.

In contrast, the AQ4100-57E, released this year, is a new model with a metallic texture. The dial of this model is made of polycarbonate, and the metallic texture is given by painting. What appears to be a metallic crystal pattern is actually inspired by the dynamic feathers of an eagle. This expression technique was first used in the blue-colored limited edition Ref. AQ4100-57M model released in 2024, and this model is the regular model that follows on from that.

The Citizen Eco-Drive Limited Edition Watch with ±5 Second Annual Accuracy

The Citizen "AQ4100-57M"
This model was announced in August 2024. Eco-Drive (Cal. A060). TI case (diameter 38.3mm, thickness 12.2mm). Water resistant to 10 bar. 418,000 yen (tax included). Sold out on the official website. (Inquiries) Citizen Customer Watch Consultation Center Tel. 0120-78-4807

The Cal. A060 movement boasts high accuracy of ±5 seconds per year, and the case is made of Citizen's proprietary Super Titanium, making it comfortable to wear. The surface is also treated with Duratect Platinum, enhancing scratch resistance and appearance quality. With the high performance and quality of each element that forms the foundation of a watch, we recommend picking one up in store if you see a dial design that catches your eye, not just this one.

Oris Big Crown Pointer Date

Oris Big Crown Pointer Date

The new Big Crown Pointer Date model for 2025 comes with a lineup of three colorful dials. It offers a pop look, a departure from the classic pilot watch aesthetic.

Oris is a must-have in the "under 50 yen" price range, which is the theme of this article. This year, Oris announced a brand renewal and, in line with this, renewed the Big Crown, one of Oris' icons. Now, let's take a look back at the Big Crown and Oris, and introduce the selected models.

The Big Crown originated as a pilot's model, featuring a large crown to make it easier for pilots to operate the watch while wearing gloves. The ProPilot X Calibre 400, which evolved from this model and now features a modern styling, is also included in the lineup. In addition to this, Oris has also included tool watches for professionals, such as the Aquis Date Calibre 400 diver's watch. However, this does not mean that Oris is a hardcore brand; they offer a wide range of compact unisex models and pop color variations, and even use environmentally friendly materials for their straps.

Automatic winding (Cal. Oris 754). 26 jewels. 28,800 vph. Power reserve approximately 41 hours. Stainless steel case (diameter 40mm, thickness 12mm). 50m water resistant. 341,000 yen each (tax included). (Inquiries) Oris Japan Tel. 03-6260-6876

This year, Oris announced a brand renewal, with a new purpose of "Make People Smile" and a pop of peach rose and green as the brand colors. For more background, please see the news article (http://www.webchronos.net/news/135883/) for more information. The key point for me is that rather than changing traditional Oris, they have begun to articulate and bring to the forefront the personality that Oris has always had. This is demonstrated by the Big Crown Pointer Date introduced here, which features a range of exciting, colorful dials that retain the charm of Oris to date. The reason for its selection is that it is an icon that embodies both the past and future of Oris.

The selected Big Crown Pointer Date has a case diameter of 40mm and is equipped with the Caliber Oris 754, which is based on the Sellita automatic movement Caliber SW200-1. Three models are available in fresh yellow, elegant lilac, and refreshing blue. While vibrant, the colors are subdued slightly in saturation and brightness, giving them a calming feel that is typical of Oris. The Pointer Date, which displays the date with a hand and from which the model name is derived, is an Oris icon that has been passed down for a long time.

Timex "Giorgio Galli S2 Ti" Ref. tx-tw2y27500

As you know, Timex is a brand with a strong presence in the lower-end price range, offering a lineup of models with diverse designs, sizes, and features, most of which are priced under 5 yen.Their lineup ranges from fashionable models to tool watches suited to harsh environments, to reproductions of past archives, and is full of attractive models that watch enthusiasts who own a variety of watches will find hard to resist buying.

So, what would happen if Giorgio Galli, the creative director of this lineup, were to release a signature model? That would be the Giorgio Galli S2 Ti, which we have selected this time.

Timex "Giorgio Galli S2 Ti" Ref. tx-tw2y27500

The distinctive layered case structure and skeletonized lugs, combined with the plain dial, create a modern impression.

Giorgio Galli has been active as a designer in the world of watches since the 1990s, serving as director of the Swatch Design Lab and working for many brands, including the Movado Group, Seiko, Citizen, Secteur, and Nautica. Giorgio Galli developed the S series at Timex, including the S1 and S2, and this is the final model in the series.

Timex "Giorgio Galli S2 Ti" Ref. tx-tw2y27500
Automatic winding (Sellita Cal. SW200-1). 28,800 vibrations per hour. Power reserve approximately 41 hours. Ti x carbon case (diameter 38 mm, thickness 12 mm). 50m water resistant. 343,200 yen (tax included). (Inquiries) Ueni Trading Co., Ltd. Tel. 03-5815-3277

The exterior is minimalist yet impactful, with a simple, plain dial and ring-shaped hour markers. Another distinctive feature is the case and lug structure, with a carbon fiber middle case sandwiched between titanium parts and the lugs featuring bold skeletonization. This creates a design in which the straight lines of the carbon fiber and titanium layers, the curves of the lugs, and the contrast between the two materials and space are intricately intertwined. Other notable features include the domed crystal, the distinctive bracelet links with recesses on the sides, and the use of polished and satin finishes.

The reason this model was selected is that it has a simple yet unique design, an unusual yet easy-to-integrate design into everyday life, and is made of titanium and carbon fiber, all for under 50 yen.

Hamilton "Khaki Field Auto" Ref.H70605160

Hamilton's Khaki Field Auto is a timeless classic among field watches that support outdoor activities without being limited to a specific purpose. With its simple design and relatively thin construction, it is a model that suits not only the field but also casual and (depending on the industry) business settings.

Not only field watches but also tool watches often use a matte finish to avoid reduced visibility due to reflections when strong light is incident. This matte texture is one of the charms that creates the stoic look of tool watches, but many people may feel that it lacks expression.

Hamilton "Khaki Field Auto" Ref.H70605160
Automatic winding (Cal. H-10). 25 jewels. 21,600 vph. Power reserve approximately 80 hours. Stainless steel case (diameter 42mm, thickness 11mm). Water resistant to 10 bar. 264,000 yen (tax included). (Inquiries) Hamilton/Swatch Group Japan Tel. 03-6254-7371

The new Khaki Field Auto model we've selected this time is a model that adds an urban essence, with a glossy metallic dial. The bezel is polished against the satin-finished case, and the dial also has a metallic texture, creating a striking contrast. The dial design inherits the previous model, with a seconds scale on the outermost periphery, Arabic numerals up to 12 on the outer periphery, and hour numerals showing the hours from 13pm onwards in 24-hour notation on the inner periphery. Variations are added by changing the finish on each part, and the metallic light reflection that is a characteristic of this model changes depending on the finish, creating the charm of this piece.

Hamilton "Khaki Field Auto" Ref.H70605160

The Ref. H70605540, a 42mm blue dial model, was also included in the lineup alongside the selected model. While it features an urban essence, it also suits outdoor light and nature well.

The model we picked is a 42mm watch with a green dial and a metal bracelet. The finished watch is relatively thin at 11mm, making it a stylish choice for urban life. A blue dial model is also available as a variation, with both a bracelet and a leather strap available. A 38mm case with a green or blue dial is also available. Both models are equipped with the automatic Cal. H-10 movement, boasting a long power reserve of approximately 80 hours. We chose this model because it combines a simple, timeless design with a movement with high basic performance, adding an urban touch that matches modern needs.
