The Leica ZM 12 features striking contrast between light and shadow
Leica made its full-scale entry into the world of mechanical watches in 2022. Its first models, the Leica L1 (now Leica ZM 1) and Leica L2 (now ZM 2), were developed in collaboration with Germany's Lehmann Precision Uhren and were brimming with Leica character. What they emphasized with these products was the feel. The precision of the crown when setting the hands, the stroke and click when pressing the push button to set the date. Each of these elements was carefully tuned, and the feel was reminiscent of the classic M-type.

In this way, Leica watches are designed to share commonalities with existing Leica products. So what elements does the basic line "Leica ZM 12" contain? Henrik Ekdahl of the watch department said, "We incorporated elements of photography into the ZM 12 and the ZM11 (the center second version). We expressed light and shadow on the dial." Indeed, when the dial is exposed to strong light, the delicate satin finish is highlighted, while the multiple deep lines between 3 and 9 o'clock cast shadows. The contrast created by the two indeed resembles a monochrome print.

As mentioned above, the first model's movement was made in-house, but the ZM 12 will use a Chronode movement. Given the company's desire to broaden its reach and attract more young users, an automatic ébauche movement was a logical choice. But why did they choose to collaborate with Chronode? "Not only is the quality excellent, but it's also easy to request customization. If, for example, we wanted to add a moon phase display in the future, it wouldn't be difficult to do so with them." With someone with such deep knowledge of watches reviewing the product, it's no surprise that Leica watches are of such high quality.
