Now in its 20th anniversary, what has Romain Gauthier, the flagship of the micro-maison, brought to the watch industry?

2025.06.10

Romain Gauthier, which celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, is arguably one of the most successful micro-maisons that have emerged in recent years. But why are high-end collectors so drawn to the watches they make? And what has changed in the watch industry since the brand's arrival? We look back on the brand's 20-year history with comments from writers Masaharu Nabata and Norio Takagi, who have long been aware of the brand's outstanding watchmaking.

A look back at Romain Gauthier's 20-year journey

The uniqueness of Romain Gauthier's watchmaking lies largely in the fact that its founder, Romain Gauthier, was not a watchmaker but a precision machinist. This is acknowledged by both Nabata Masashi and Takagi Norio, who have been with the company since its inception. Raised in the Vallée de Joux, Gauthier studied precision engineering at a technical college and then qualified as a precision machinery designer. While working as a highly skilled machine tool programmer and operator at a local watch parts manufacturer, he began to dream of one day creating his own watches and starting his own brand. Uniquely, he first earned an MBA as a step toward realizing this dream. He then apprenticed under the renowned Philippe Dufour, thoroughly learning the traditional watchmaking techniques of the Vallée de Joux, and founded his own company in 2005. In 06, he completed a movement of his own design.

The first model, the "Prestige HM," was released at Baselworld in 07, followed by the "HMS" in 10. While the intricate appearance and design, such as the crown on the caseback and the semi-open dial, attracted attention, what truly impressed watch connoisseurs was the shape and finish of each part of the movement. Nabata explains, "The gears are particularly impressive. When I saw the gears, with their circular spokes arranged in a petal-like design, I was taken aback by their beauty. Even the escape wheel has this design, and the inner corners are beautifully hand-finished, just like the bridge. No other brand has put so much effort into gears. European bicycle manufacturers used to focus on the shape of gear wheels, and I felt that this was similar, and I really liked it."

As is evident in the deeply cut chamfered return angles (Coin-Lentrin) of the bridges, the Insight Micro-Rotor allows you to fully enjoy the hand-finished movements that Romain Gauthier is so proud of. The use of a variety of finishes, including polished, sunburst, hairline, and circular grain, creates a truly expressive look.

This iconic model boasts a compact yet industry-leading 22K gold rotor supported by bridges on both the front and back. The rotor is a quiet, bidirectional winding system, and the two barrels arranged in series ensure high precision and a long power reserve. The contrast between the in-house Grand Feu enamel dial and the polished bridges is stunning. Automatic winding. 33 jewels. 28,800 vph. Power reserve of approximately 80 hours. 18KRG case (39.5mm diameter, 12.9mm thick). Water resistant to 50m. Limited to 10 pieces worldwide. 1661 million yen (tax included).

Takagi also praises the gear design, which has since become a signature, as a design that only Roman Gauthier, with his outstanding machining skills, could have achieved. "Gauthier was the watch industry's first genius in machining programming. He used advanced programming to operate a CNC machining center, and by thoroughly managing the temperature of room temperature and cutting oil to control thermal expansion during machining, he achieved an incredible machining precision of ±2 microns. This is why we remain an extremely prestigious supplier and receive a constant stream of requests for parts, allowing us to use many intricately shaped, minute parts in our own products, including circular spoke gears. This high level of precision minimizes post-processing, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of traditional hand-chamfered finishes. Of course, these advantages are also evident in the exterior."

Gauthier's watchmaking, which combines his expertise in precision engineering with the traditional watchmaking of the Vallée de Joux, quickly captured the hearts of collectors not satisfied with the big brands. His "Logical One," a reinterpretation of the classic fusee-and-chain mechanism, won the Grand Prix in the Men's Complications category at the Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix in 13, solidifying his reputation. He continued to expand his fan base with the release of his first automatic watch, the "Insight Micro-Rotor," in 17, and the "C by Romain Gauthier," positioned as the brand's entry-level collection, in 21.

The stepped bridge, known as the finger bridge, is made of titanium, just like the case. The edges are double-chamfered, and the flat surfaces and the area around the ruby are raised and finished with a hairline finish. The inside of the edge is hand-engraved. Other highlights include a thick free-sprung balance and a snail cam that enables stop-seconds while reducing shock.

A black sapphire dial has been added to the "C by Romain Gauthier" bracelet. Clever openworking has been applied without compromising the distinctive off-center design, exposing the escapement and the area around the fourth wheel. The brand's signature circular spoke gears and meticulous chamfering can be seen at all times. Blue and white accent colors are also effective. Manual winding. 24 jewels. 28,800 vph. Power reserve approximately 60 hours. Ti case (41mm diameter, 9.55mm thick). Water resistant to 50m. 9.9 million yen (tax included).

"Romain Gauthier's watches are consistent with the passion for aesthetics and functionality that only an engineer can have, unlike a watchmaker. As a result, I feel that they have made many people realize that the shape and finish of each individual part enhances the intrinsic value of a watch, and have given people an opportunity to turn their attention to Micro Maisons," says Nabata. Takagi also commented on the company's influence: "What is noteworthy is that all of the watches they have created, including their masterpiece, the Logical One, are time-only watches. They have proven that success can be achieved without presenting a complicated mechanism, as long as the watch has a unique design, structure, and beautiful finish. I think this is a great achievement."

Romain Gauthier has created beautiful timepieces with the approach of a talented engineer, sparking a boom in micro-maisons. As long as there are connoisseurs seeking rarer, more valuable timepieces, the company's advance is unlikely to stop.
