Scratch-resistant masterpieces put an end to the scratch problem that plagues watch enthusiasts

Polished by the hands of a craftsman, luxury watches are like pieces of jewelry. When they're new, their shine is truly captivating. However, as you wear your watch on your wrist and spend your days together, one day you might suddenly notice a scratch on your watch that you didn't even notice. The threat of scratches on your watch is everywhere, from when you walk with your arm swinging, to when you accidentally search your bag with your hand wearing the watch, or when you reach into the dispenser of a vending machine. If a watch develops some scratches over the years of use, you might not notice it much, but if it's a scratch that occurred shortly after you bought it, it's even more so. You'll spend your days looking at the scratches with a magnifying glass and regretting it. I'm sure many of you have had the same bitter experience.

So, this time we'll be introducing some tough watches with highly scratch-resistant exteriors. Today, there are many masterpieces that showcase each manufacturer's technological capabilities, including models made with exceptionally hard materials such as ceramics and sapphire crystal, and models that use unique surface hardening techniques to increase the hardness of stainless steel and titanium. We've put together a wide selection, from affordable watches to high-end complication watches.

The Omega Speedmaster, nicknamed the "Moonwatch," was carried as official equipment on all six of NASA's moon landing projects. Originally launched in 1957 as a chronograph watch for motor racing, the Speedmaster's exceptional durability has seen it travel into space and contribute to the development of human history.

The Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 introduced here is a special model that commemorates the achievement of Apollo 8. The anodized aluminum dial features the surface of the moon, while the movement's base plate and bridges, visible through the see-through back, are laser-etched to depict the reverse side of the moon. The small seconds hand at 9 o'clock is also playful and appealing, featuring the Saturn V rocket used on the mission.

It features a rocket-shaped hand on the small second hand at 9 o'clock and a dial reminiscent of the surface of the moon.

The case is made of black ceramic. Ceramics is a material that is increasingly being adopted by many brands these days due to its high hardness, corrosion resistance, and scratch resistance. While it may chip if subjected to strong force, with everyday use it should be able to maintain its beauty for many years, comparable to when it was new.

The movement used is Cal. 3869, a Master Chronometer certified manual-winding chronograph movement equipped with a co-axial escapement.

Sinn "U50.HYDRO.S"

U50.HYDRO

Sinn "U50.HYDRO.S"
A professional-grade diver's watch with a tough exterior and excellent visibility. It incorporates many of Sinn's unique technologies. Quartz movement. Stainless steel case (41mm diameter, 11.8mm thick). 500 bar water resistance. 830,500 yen (tax included). (Inquiries) Hotta Tel. 03-5148-2174

Sinn has developed a number of unique technologies, known as "Sinn Technology," to create professional watches that function even in extreme environments. The U50.HYDRO.S is a quartz diver's watch that allows you to fully enjoy that technology.

The black dial, featuring bar indexes and rose-shaped hour and minute hands, offers excellent visibility not only on land but also underwater. The secret to this is "hydrotechnology," which seals a special oil inside the case. This dramatically improves the viewing angle of the dial, ensuring visibility from any angle. Furthermore, this oil makes the contraction rate of the gas inside the case almost the same as that of seawater or freshwater, achieving an extraordinary water resistance of 500 atmospheres.

The case is made of highly corrosion-resistant U-boat steel and finished with a black hard coating, a combination of Tegiment surface hardening technology and PVD coating. While its surface hardness is comparable to that of ceramic, the PVD coating is highly durable and will not peel off upon impact. The unidirectional rotating bezel is secured with a special side screw fastening system, preventing it from coming off even if the watch is struck against rocks during a dive.

Light-powered quartz movement. Approximately 5 years on a full charge (in power save mode). Ti x ceramic case (diameter 44mm, thickness 13.7mm). Water resistant to 10 bar. Price: 308,000 yen (tax included). (Inquiries) Citizen Customer Watch Consultation Center 0120-78-4807

This high-end model is part of the Citizen Attesa ActLine lineup, which is highly popular among active businessmen. The flat case and flowing bracelet give it a sporty look.

Although it has a striking 44mm diameter, it is lightweight thanks to the use of "Super Titanium™" with Duratect, a proprietary surface hardening technology, for the middle case, case back, and bracelet. The bezel is made of ceramic, a first for an Attesa watch. In addition to its hard and scratch-resistant properties, the strong hairline on the surface also serves as a design accent.

The rough-textured black dial is inspired by raw titanium. The three subdials are fitted with metal rings, and the metallic flange creates a solid impression that harmonizes with the case.

It also features many functions, including GPS satellite radio wave reception, solar-powered Eco-Drive, perpetual calendar, chronograph, double direct flight for easy time zone adjustment, and alarm.

The Submersible BMG Tech™ 3 Days Automatic is the first mechanical watch to feature BMG Tech™ for its case, bezel, crown, and crown protector. Its unique molecular structure makes it harder and lighter than stainless steel, while also providing excellent corrosion resistance.

The case measures a massive 47mm in diameter. Its design, including a combination of dot and bar indices, a deep blue dial, and a solid unidirectional rotating bezel, is typical of a diver's watch, but the crown protector and small seconds at 9 o'clock add a unique touch. The case back is made of titanium.

The watch is equipped with the automatic Cal. P9010 movement, which boasts a practical power reserve of approximately 72 hours thanks to its two barrels. The hour hand can also be moved independently in one-hour increments, making it easy to adjust for time differences when traveling to different time zones.
