Kanna Hashimoto stars in "Spirited Away" to open in Shanghai
Despite being performed in Japanese with a Japanese cast, the London production of "Spirited Away" attracted an audience of approximately 300,000, making it the biggest success in the history of Japanese theater. It is still fresh in our memory that 135 performances were performed over a period of about four months at the London Coliseum in the West End, known as a theater district on a par with New York's Broadway, and the excitement of the sold-out crowds every day. With that same excitement and emotion still fresh in our memory, the Shanghai production in China began on Monday, July 14th.
Kanna Hashimoto, who plays the lead role of Chihiro in the film, posted a photo of herself smiling on Instagram with a piece of paper in her hand that read, "Run to the end as Chihiro!! Kanna." The post has received warm comments from fans, such as, "So cute! She's an angel!!!!!" and "Both Kanna and the faceless T-shirt she's wearing are so cute."
Even though she is part of a double cast, it is a tough schedule that means she has to perform two shows a day by herself on some days. Hashimoto Kanna will be appearing a total of 15 times in the Shanghai performances, showing her strong enthusiasm for the stage. During the curtain call of the first performance, Hashimoto Kanna asked the audience in Chinese, "Did you all enjoy it?", which erupted in a chorus of "It was fun!" from the audience.
Naturally, the venue was packed with fans of Hashimoto Kanna, with many praising her performance as Chihiro, with comments such as, "I've seen her on TV and in dramas, but this is the first time I've seen her in a leading role in a play. I was surprised, but it was great," and "She was faithful to the original, and just like the little child in the anime."
From a "once-in-a-millennium idol" to an actress
In her third year of elementary school, Kanna Hashimoto asked her mother if she wanted to appear on television, and that's when she joined a talent agency in Fukuoka, marking the beginning of her entertainment career. It's a widely known story that she joined the dance and vocal unit "DVL" run by the agency, and then auditioned for director Hirokazu Koreeda's "Miracle," earning her her first film appearance. She gained experience appearing in dramas on local television stations and on stage with a children's theater troupe, and in her elementary school graduation essay she wrote that her dream for the future was to become an actress.
The turning point came in 2013. When she participated in an event in her hometown of Fukuoka as a member of Rev. from DVL (the successor unit to DVL), a photo taken by a fan was spread across social media as a "miracle photo," and Hashimoto Kanna's popularity skyrocketed. The photo caught the eye of Kadokawa CEO Shinichiro Inoue, who immediately emailed her agency, saying, "I'd love to make a movie with her." Later that week, at a local live event, he asked her to star in his film, an anecdote that was revealed at the press conference announcing the production of the film "Sailor Suit and Machine Gun: Graduation."
On March 9, 2014, just a few days before her junior high school graduation ceremony, she launched her Twitter account (now X), which garnered over 20,000 followers within three days of its launch. Since then, she has continued to build her career outside of acting, appearing in a variety of genres, including hosting, gravure modeling, and variety shows. Starting in 2022, she will host the NHK Kouhaku Uta Gassen for the third consecutive year, solidifying her status as a popular, nationally loved talent.
