G-SHOCK's new GBA-950-1A may look simple at first glance, but it's actually a powerful training aid. In addition to the analog display, four other displays allow you to check your progress toward your goals and the intensity of your workout, without interrupting your training. It also works with smartphone apps, offering a new option for those looking for an "analog-digital" G-SHOCK training watch. Martin Green, editor of the US edition of WatchTime, reviews its appeal.

Quartz movement. Resin case (48.5mm x 43.9mm, 16mm thick). Water resistant to 20 bar. Price: 25,300 yen (tax included).
A G-SHOCK for training with "analog-digital" specifications
When it comes to G-SHOCK training watches for running, the first thing that comes to mind is the G-SQUAD series. The full digital display provides useful training information such as your current pace.
However, a new model equipped with training functions has been released among G-SHOCK's "analog-digital" models. This is the "GBA-950-1A." While the analog display draws your eye, it actually comes equipped with a variety of display functions that are useful for training.
Four displays discreetly incorporated into the modest exterior

The new 2025 G-SHOCK GBA-950-1A features a dial with a deliberately subdued impression. The large LCD display in the lower half and the round display at 9 o'clock are instantly recognizable. Additionally, there are bar-shaped LCD displays at 12 o'clock and 3 o'clock.
Depending on the mode, the former will show the progress towards the goal, while the latter will show the intensity of the exercise you are currently doing (how much strain is being placed on your body). Both displays are subtly self-indulgent, but being able to see this information at a glance just by looking at the screen is a very important element of this model.
It also works with smartphones and can be operated with buttons.
By connecting to the app via Bluetooth, you can check detailed logs and adjust various settings from your smartphone. Additionally, the familiar four-button operation is intuitive, a G-SHOCK feature. It also comes with a full range of practical functions, including five alarms, a countdown timer, a 1/100-second stopwatch, dual time, and a full calendar up to 2099.
It looks large but is lightweight and breathable.

While the watch measures 48.5mm long and 43.9mm wide, it's quite noticeable, thanks to the octagonal case shape and the integrated bezel strap, which utilizes folding technology. Thanks to the use of bio-resin, the total weight is a mere 53g, making it quite light. The louvers on the strap not only allow for greater freedom in adjusting the fit, but also contribute to breathability during everyday wear.

Nighttime visibility and durability
The LED light can be instantly activated with a push of a button, and combined with the luminous indices on the hour and minute hands, it makes it easy to read the time even in the dark. On the other hand, it's true that the four LCD displays have limited visibility in the dark. However, considering the price range, this is a reasonable compromise. The case is designed to provide solid protection for the crystal and buttons, and combined with the 20-atmosphere water resistance, it provides a sense of security for everyday use.
Satisfaction beyond the price
Its understated design, consistent display of all the necessary information on a single screen, and lightweight comfort make it perfect for training. Casio's expertise is undeniable, as they've managed to offer all of this for just under 2 yen.
