Greubel Forsey Cosmic Amphitheater

2025.10.06

The moment you put it on your wrist, your gaze is drawn to the center of the circle. The stage is the same "theatrical" as the previous model. However, in this new model, every element has been optimized while retaining the feel of a globe. Compactness is not compression, but refinement. The addition of a power reserve display means you don't have to worry about the remaining time during your journey. Rather than showing off numbers, it speaks to the quality of the time you spend. The second act of Greubel Forsey's GMT is an evolution that can be understood with the senses.

The second act of refinement

The Earth rotates. 24 hours on a stage on the wrist. Greubel Forsey's GMT Balancière Convex is an amphitheater featuring a rotating titanium globe as its centerpiece, with stepped rings that concentrically indicate the time, second time zone, and day/night. Furthermore, the comprehensive strength demonstrated by the previous model, such as the three-dimensional functional beauty and pursuit of isochronism brought about by the signature 30-degree tilt balance, and the practicality demonstrated by approximately 72 hours of continuous operation, is now refined with a gentle convex shape that makes it comfortable to wear despite its imposing scale. This "cosmic perspective" is the core of this lineage.

The crackling of the crown as you turn it with your fingertips, the faint sound of its click, the band of light flowing along the curved sapphire crystal—these interplay of sensations transforms the rationality of the mechanism into art. With each tilt of your wrist, the shadows on the globe shift, and time emerges as a landscape rather than just a number.

Greubel Forsey has always maintained the stance of connecting technology with beauty under the banner of "Art of Invention." Built on the principles cultivated through "10 inventions" that overturned conventional wisdom about luxury watches, the brand chooses density over quantity. Production is generally limited, with only 66 units of the previous GMT over a three-year period starting in 2022, while 22 units of this latest model are planned. The reason for limiting production numbers is not to make the watch rare, but to circulate the learnings and insights gained from each watch and recycle them into the next model. Its perfection and consistent design philosophy attract collectors worldwide, and each release is a center of attention.

On the case back, a sapphire crystal disc engraved with 24 cities simultaneously displays Universal Time and summer/winter time. The city name for UTC+1 has been replaced with La Chaux-de-Fonds, the atelier's base, instead of Paris. The difference between a white and black background indicates whether the city observes daylight saving time. Linked to the central 24-hour ring, the day/night time of the time zone can be instantly read. It is highly legible and easy to operate.

While the new model retains the name, it is in fact a completely different piece. The case diameter has been reduced from 43.5mm to 42.9mm, a difference of just 0.6mm, but the process has been practically reworked from scratch. Rather than simply shrinking the size, the design follows the structure of the stage set, while revising the proportions and placement of each unit to align the line of sight and the center of gravity when worn. In fact, the vertical diameter of the case has been reduced by 1.6mm, from 46.5mm to 44.9mm. A power reserve indicator has also been added to the dial side. There is no doubt about its usefulness as a hand-wound travel watch. Moreover, it is placed discreetly in a position that does not disrupt the view of the theater.

The finishing of the details is as superb as ever. The edges of the steps are mirror-finished, while the surfaces have a fine hairline. This alternation smooths the reflections. The 30-degree tilted balance is supported by polished steel pillars beneath steel bridges with black polished and barrel polished finishes. Many of the other bridges and plates are made of titanium or nickel silver, with a combination of fine matte and grained finishes that bring out the texture of the material. If it were too rough, the light would become muddy; if it were too fine, the surface would appear expressionless. By striking a golden mean, the shadows of the globe appear deep, and the movement of the 30-degree tilted balance stands out rather than receding into the background. When you encounter such a fine example where the appearance of light and information is skillfully adjusted, you really feel that the finish itself is functional.

The world time display on the back complements the front, which intuitively conveys the current location and time difference, and brings together only the essentials. Furthermore, the published number of movement parts has increased by 73 from the previous model, to a total of 496. This is the result not only of the addition of a power reserve display, but also of a redesign to improve precision. Shifting the emphasis from quantity to quality, the watch has been refined into a single GMT that is effective both in everyday life and on travel. The stage is the same, but the production is up to date. The "Amphitheater of Cosmic Perspective" becomes even clearer in the second act of refinement.
