Ulysse Nardin Freak X: A needleless icon that embodies the DNA of innovation

2025.11.15

Rather than relying on familiar hands, the movement itself tells the time - an experience that quietly overturns conventional wisdom on the wrist. Precision forged in the ocean, complex mechanisms honed by astronomy, and a future paved with silicon. The Freak X is the present-day expression of this lineage, applied to everyday standards. Pulsating with Ulysse Nardin's innovative DNA, this brand icon possesses the practical strength to blend naturally into any outfit. Its comfortable rotation will even redefine the way you read time.

Freak X

Freak X
"Freak" means "unconventional or heretical." While the Freak X is a signature collection from Ulysse Nardin and often comes in limited editions, these three regular models offer fun choices based on where you plan to take it. The popular blue (2303-270/03) is made of lightweight titanium and blue PVD for ease of use and resistance to sweat and humidity. The black (2303-270.1/BLACK) model features a DLC coating on titanium for a hard surface that makes minor scratches less noticeable, making it perfect for business trips or active days. The rose gold (2305-270.2/02) model is a hybrid of 18KRG and titanium, providing a solid weight and elegance for formal occasions while also being suitable for everyday wear. Both models feature a 43mm diameter and 13.38mm thick case, with sloping lugs for a comfortable fit. The blue PVD offers vibrant color, the DLC offers scratch resistance, and the 18KRG acquires a patina over time. Blue dial + titanium case: 4,345,000 yen. Black dial + titanium DLC case: 4,345,000 yen (tax included). Black dial + 18KRG case: 6,028,000 yen (tax included). All are automatic (Cal. UN-230). 21 jewels. 21,600 vph. Power reserve approximately 72 hours. Water resistant to 50m.

The movement tells the time: Ulysse Nardin Freak X

The mechanism speaks, not the hands. The Freak X is the current incarnation of Ulysse Nardin, which has achieved this standard of "everyday wear." The path to this point is connected by a single thread of "DNA of innovation" that dates back to the 19th century. At the time, Ulysse Nardin supported global navigation with marine chronometers for navies, and through its relentless pursuit of technology, it maintained its leadership for over a century. After quartz watches took the Swiss watch industry by storm in the 1980s, it redefined complex mechanisms with a trilogy that transplanted astronomical displays into wristwatches. It made the world aware of their value as artisans and led the revival of mechanical watches.

Freak X

Check out the details of this 18K rose gold model. Silicon components are exposed on the dial side. From the balance spring to the balance wheel, pallet fork, and Swiss lever escapement, all silicon components are manufactured at Ulysse Nardin's specialized Sigatec laboratory. The silicon's interference color, which changes from blue-purple depending on the angle of the light, accentuates the movement of the carousel.

Then, in 2001, the first Freak was released. It was a flying carousel watch that showed the time by rotating the movement itself, without the hands, dial, or crown. The company pioneered the use of a silicon escapement. Its non-magnetic, low-wear, and lightweight properties directly led to stable rate performance and long-term maintainability, bringing this futuristic material into everyday life.

As a wristwatch laboratory, Freak has continually updated its innovative technologies, and the 18 Freak Vision featured a large silicon balance wheel and grinder automatic winding, bringing the concept to mass production specifications. The 19 Freak X brings these results to a standard that can be used every day. It is equipped with the UN-230 movement, an automatic movement that combines Freak Vision know-how with the track record of the company's flagship model (UN-118), and boasts a power reserve of approximately 72 hours. Operation is unified to the crown, ensuring ease of use without compromising originality.

The box-shaped sapphire crystal provides a sense of openness, revealing the three-dimensionality of the mechanism. The distance from the outer scale also contributes to ease of reading. Meanwhile, the modest case size makes it easy to fit under your wrist and easy to handle.

The display faithfully follows the Freak grammar. The central flying carousel (rotating carriage) displays the minutes (one rotation per hour), while the lower disc indicates the hours. There's no need to worry about overlapping hour and minute hands or parallax, and the angle of rotation is intuitively readable as the passage of time. It's not a mechanism for show. It's a mechanism for reading. Furthermore, the advantages of silicon—low mass, non-magnetic, and low wear—combine with variable inertia and optimal aerodynamic adjustments to aim for a rate that won't break down in actual use. As a result, the foregrounding of the mechanism (display = drive integration) and the standardization of operation (automatic winding x crown) coexist with equal strength.

There are also plenty of variations on the current regular model. Blue highlights the lines of the bridge and the axis of rotation, simplifying visibility. Black reduces reflections and enhances the contrast of the rotation vector, creating a stoic look. The high density of 18K rose gold enhances the presence of movement, making it suitable for both formal and everyday wear. Even with changes in material and color, the readability of the watch, "where the movement is the subject," remains unchanged.

The see-through case back reveals the in-house Cal. UN-230 automatic winding mechanism. The rotor, made of the same 18K rose gold as the case, rotates smoothly. The reliability is also evident on the back.

Another core element of Ulysse Nardin is its lineage of Métiers d'Art, represented by the renowned Donze Cadrans enamel. The deep enamel tones are enhanced by the clarity of its structure. The Freak X's display logic is simple and robust, allowing for the expansion of materials, colors, and textures. This makes it a convincing foundation for limited edition pieces that run alongside Métiers d'Art.

Since its founding in 1846, Ulysse Nardin's long-standing technical expertise and unconventional approach to watchmaking have continually pushed the boundaries of watch engineering and design. Building on this tireless evolution, Freak X has been a natural addition since 2019. Already acclaimed overseas, its popularity has been rapidly expanding in Japan in recent years.

The Freak X is an icon of Ulysse Nardin. History, mechanics, and the aesthetics of craftsmanship are all now moving in the same direction.
