Tank: A wristwatch with over 100 years of history

Cartier was founded by Louis-François Cartier in 1847. While the brand developed with royalty and aristocracy as its main customers and established itself as a global jeweller, it also strengthened its presence in the field of watchmaking, developing the world's first mass-produced wristwatch, the Santos, in 1904.

One of Cartier's most iconic collections is the Tank, which was released in 1917. This collection is said to have been inspired by the floor plan of a Renault tank from World War I, and features a rectangular case with no bezel, with the case and lugs integrated into one. Its linear, refined design has remained largely unchanged since its release, and it has continued to be loved by many people throughout the ages.

The photo shows a Tank manufactured in 1920. It is clear that the basic style has remained unchanged from the early models to the present day.

The collection's pioneering Art Deco design is also suitable for formal occasions, making it suitable for business wear. Many models feature a slim design that easily fits under a shirt cuff, adding to their practical appeal. Furthermore, the Tank's history spanning more than a century not only confers status on the wrist, but also helps the wearer express timeless values that are not affected by trends.

The current Tank collection covers a wide range of needs, including the traditional "Tank Louis Cartier" and the modern "Tank Française," as well as mechanical models and solar-powered models. A wide variety of models with designs that blend in with casual outfits are also available, making them ideal for both business casual and everyday wear.

Below, we will introduce the five main series in the Tank collection, their characteristics, and representative models.

"Tank Mast" Ref.WSTA0054

The Tank Must collection, launched in 2021, is a modern reinterpretation of the design of the original Tank and the essence of the Must de Cartier collection, which was popular in the 1970s and 1980s. The lineup is characterized by well-balanced proportions and a minimalist design philosophy that strips away ornamentation.

Quartz movement. Stainless steel case (33.7mm x 25.5mm, 6.6mm thick). Water resistant for everyday use. Price: 731,500 yen (tax included).

The Ref. WSTA0054 features a deep burgundy lacquer dial, giving it a strikingly distinctive look. The indices and second hand are removed, leaving only the hour and minute hands and the Maison's logo for a refined layout. The strap is crafted from burgundy alligator leather, matching the dial's color, making it a chic addition to any outfit.

Although this model is a medium-sized model, the stainless steel case measures just 33.7mm long and 25.5mm wide, and thanks to the slim quartz movement, the thickness is only 6.6mm.

The tip of the crown is set with a blue cabochon-cut synthetic spinel, Cartier's symbol, creating a striking symbol within the minimalist look.

Tank Mast Solar Beat™ Ref. WSTA0138

Also from Tank Mast, we selected the Ref. WSTA0138, which is equipped with a solar-powered SolarBeat™ movement. Compared to models powered by a primary battery, this model reduces the hassle of regular battery changes, making it suitable for busy business people.

Photovoltaic power generation SolarBeat™. Stainless steel case (33.7mm x 25.5mm, 6.6mm thick). Water resistant for everyday use. 627,000 yen (tax included).

The dial of this watch has the classic Tank look, combining Roman numeral indexes, a railway minute track, and tempered blue hour and minute hands. Meanwhile, tiny holes invisible to the naked eye are placed on the surface of the dial, allowing light to penetrate to the movement. This ensures practicality as a solar quartz watch without compromising the traditional design.

The compact stainless steel case is combined with a black strap for a sophisticated monochrome look. The strap is made of chic black calfskin. Of course, you can enjoy different styles by changing the strap or bracelet.

Tank Française Ref. WSTA0067

The Tank Française is a collection with a unified design that flows seamlessly from the case to the bracelet. Here, we introduce the large model Ref. WSTA0067 from the current lineup, which underwent a 2023 refresh.

Automatic winding. Stainless steel case (36.7mm x 30.5mm, 10.1mm thick). Water resistant for everyday use. Price: 1,108,800 yen (tax included).

The greatest feature of this watch is its modern and powerful appearance. The case and bracelet, with their striking linear beauty, feature extensive use of satin finishing, creating a sharp and urban look. The polygonal crown is also designed to blend in with the case, so as not to interfere with the overall silhouette. Meanwhile, the rounded blue spinel set at its tip provides a soft accent to the otherwise sharp design.

The silver dial features Roman numeral indexes and a railway minute track. The tempered blue hands not only accentuate the look but also enhance legibility. This model also features a date window at the 3 o'clock position and a three-hand design with a second hand, making it suitable for business settings.

The case measures a striking 36.7mm x 30.5mm and is equipped with an automatic mechanical movement, while its thickness is kept to just 10.1mm, achieving a size balance that combines strength with comfort.

Tank Louis Cartier Ref. WGTA0346

The Tank Louis Cartier line-up includes models that faithfully inherit the design of the original Tank, which was also favored by the third-generation head of the family, Louis Cartier. From this collection, which could be called the "orthodox" Tank, we have selected the elegant Ref. WGTA0346.

Automatic winding (Cal. 1899 MC). 24 jewels. 28,800 vph. Power reserve approximately 39 hours. 18KPG case (38.1mm x 27.75mm, 8.18mm thick). Water resistant for everyday use. Price: 2,692,800 yen (tax included).

The case is crafted from 18K pink gold, and its soft color and meticulous finish create a sophisticated appearance. The case features distinctive rounded edges and a crown set with a sapphire cabochon, symbolizing the Maison's jewellery heritage, all of which recall the original 1922 model.

The dial is foil-stamped silver with a yellow burnish finish, and its minimalist design evokes a classic aesthetic. The pattern radiating from the center harmonizes with the angled indexes and railway minute track. This also reduces light reflection from the dial, allowing the tempered blue hour and minute hands to stand out.

The movement is the automatic Cal. 1899 MC. Its slim design contributes greatly to the slim case thickness of this watch, just 8.18mm. Its elegant and refined appearance makes it a perfect example of a dress watch, suitable for important business meetings and formal occasions.

Tank Américaine Ref.WGTA0300

The Tank Américaine is a spin-off collection that offers a modern interpretation of the vertical Tank Cintrée, which debuted in 1921. Its appeal lies in its elegant shape, which combines the Tank's powerful linearity with the curves that hug the wrist.

Automatic winding. 18K yellow gold case (44.4mm x 24.4mm, 8.6mm thick). Water resistant for everyday use. Price: 3,141,600 yen (tax included).

The curved, vertically elongated case that characterizes this model is ergonomically designed and also serves a functional purpose of improving the fit on the wrist. The Ref. WGTA0300 uses 18K yellow gold for the case, further enhancing its dressy impression. In contrast to the curves of the case, the polygonal crown is set with a blue sapphire, effectively accenting the overall design.

In addition, the silver-tone dial features Roman numeral indexes that are stretched vertically to match the shape of the case, enhancing the sense of unity of the design.

Inside is an automatic mechanical movement. The strap is made of matte navy blue alligator leather, adding a modern touch. This watch is suitable for business situations as well as glamorous occasions like parties.
