What is Seiko's "5 Sports"?

Seiko 5 Sports is the brand that supports the basic line of mechanical watches at Seiko today. Despite being a basic line, it offers high reliability and practicality, making it a highly satisfying model for first-time mechanical watch buyers, and is also popular among core watch enthusiasts.

The ancestor of the current lineup is the Seiko 5 Sports, released in 1968. Designed to respond to the sports boom of the time, it featured improved water resistance, luminous paint for improved visibility, and tempered glass. Its avant-garde, vivid colors accented the design, making it a popular choice. This casual yet sporty design seems to have led to the Speedtimer automatic chronograph model released in 1969 and later, and it can be said that it had a major impact on Seiko's lineup in terms of design as well.

The current 5 Sports was revamped in 2019 to streamline the (previously somewhat cluttered) lineup. While inheriting the traditional high reliability and practicality, the brand is developed under the concept of "Show Your Style," which allows you to express your own style without being bound by convention.

Seiko's current "5 Sports" collection

What kind of collections are currently being developed for these five sports with such a long history?

"SNXS" series

First up is the "SNXS" series, designed as an informal watch. This series is based on a model that previously had the SNXS reference, and was developed with the concept of EDC (Everyday Carry), or "a companion to carry around every day." With its simple design, muted dial colors that evoke the patina of aging, and compact, lightweight feel, it's a watch you'll want to wear in both casual and business settings, making it a true "EDC" watch.

The compact 37.4mm diameter case features a flowing shape with a bulge in the center, which was once nicknamed "Hebitama" by the collection's developers. The crown, integrated into the case shape, is located at the 4 o'clock position. It features a day-date display at the 3 o'clock position, and the thick hour and minute hands and indexes, along with the luminous paint applied to them, ensure high legibility. While this is merely my personal opinion, these designs are reminiscent of the classic "5 Sports" style, and fans will be pleased with the finished product.

Seiko 5 Sports "SNXS" Ref.SBSA255
Automatic movement (Cal. 4R36). 24 jewels. 21,600 vph. Power reserve approximately 41 hours. Stainless steel case (diameter 37.4 mm, thickness 12.5 mm). Water resistant to 10 bar. Price: 46,200 yen (tax included).

Among the diverse range of Seiko 5 Sports designs, this is my personal favorite. The simple and subdued color scheme makes it easy to incorporate into a wide range of styles, and it would also be fun to switch to a leather strap.

"SKX" series

The "SKX" series is based on the styling of the diver's watches that the company once manufactured. The original diver's watches gained popularity for their diverse dial colors and designs, and have a history of being incorporated into street fashion. The current SKX series also has a wide variety of designs, ranging from classic tool watch styles to artistic models.

SBSA299

Seiko 5 Sports "SKX" Ref.SBSA299
Automatic movement (Cal. 4R36). 24 jewels. 21,600 vph. Power reserve approximately 41 hours. Stainless steel case (diameter 38.0 mm, thickness 12.1 mm). Water resistant to 10 bar. Price: 46,200 yen (tax included).

The Ref. SBSA299 featured in this article is a model with a modern, deep blue theme color. Its iconic features include a unidirectional rotating bezel inherited from diver's watches, highly visible hour and minute hands, and an asymmetrical case shape with a crown card. With a case diameter of 38mm, it is perfect for those seeking a sporty yet stylish look. Its comfortable size, simple design, and bracelet make it a good fit for business settings as well.

Other models in the SKX series include the iconic orange dial model Ref. SSK005KC and the Ref. SBSA045, which eliminates the rotating bezel and has an informal watch feel, allowing customers to choose a watch that suits them best from the diverse lineup.

"Field" series

The "Field" series includes field watches that were popular in the past. Among them, the Ref. SBSC009 featured here is a rare model for the Seiko 5 Sports, with a white dial, a small calendar window with only the date, and a GMT display.

The design is based on white, featuring the Field series' standard pencil-shaped hour and minute hands. An orange GMT hand with a pentagonal decoration adds an accent, and the fixed bezel features a 24-hour display corresponding to the GMT hand. Additionally, the Arabic numerals up to 12 are displayed inside to indicate the hours from 13:00 to 24:00. This is a detail often seen in field watches with military origins.

Seiko 5 Sports "FIELD" Ref.SBSC009
Automatic movement (Cal. 4R34). 24 jewels. 21,600 vph. Power reserve approximately 41 hours. Stainless steel case (diameter 39.4 mm, thickness 13.6 mm). Water resistant to 10 bar. Price: 46,200 yen (tax included).

The case diameter is 39.4mm, giving it a moderate presence, and it is paired with a five-row bracelet. The lineup includes the Ref. SBSC011 with a black dial based on the design of this watch, and the Ref. SBSC013 with a black case, so you can choose the one that best suits your style and the occasion.

Traditionally, models labeled "Seiko 5" have been standard with hour, minute, second, and day-date displays. From this perspective, models with a GMT display, such as this one, break away from that framework and reflect the "Show Your Style" concept.

Other models in the Field series include the Ref. SBSA201, which incorporates the traditional Seiko 5 Sports format of hours, minutes, seconds, and day and date displays into a basic field watch design.
