An elegant take on Sinn's signature tool watch

2025 will mark the 12th anniversary of the birth of Sinn's legendary "104" model. The "104 Classic 12" could be said to be the culmination of a certain evolutionary step in that history.

What began as a robust pilot's watch incorporating elements of a diver's watch has now become one of the pinnacles of German engineering. It's not just a tool; it's an instrument with a soul. It's a watch for everyday use, with a firm presence and a sense of purpose, while remaining close to your everyday life.

In addition to the model with a stainless steel bracelet, there is also a model with a leather strap in the lineup. Automatic (Cal. SW261-1). 31 jewels. 28,800 vph. Power reserve approximately 38 hours. Stainless steel case (diameter 41mm, thickness 11.9mm). Water resistant to 20 bar. 572,000 yen (tax included).

Following the announcement of this watch in September 2025, the German editorial team at WatchTime decided to get hands-on with the model and thoroughly examine its appeal.

A new look at the classics

The Sinn 104 Classic 12 is a watch that embodies the DNA of the Frankfurt-based brand: functionality, technical precision and uncompromising finish.

But this time, there's more. A subtle refinement has been added to the formula that defines Sinn's quality: for the first time in this series, a small seconds design has been adopted.

The small seconds dial is placed at the 6 o'clock position, giving it a classic impression, and is chamois-colored (a pale, warm beige). The fine graining and its lustrous chamfering create a quiet sense of depth.

The finely adjusted bracelet links are polished in the center and matte elsewhere, giving the watch a rugged, tool-like feel typical of Sinn, as well as an elegant look suitable for everyday use.

The rest of the dial is thoroughly understated. The dial itself is black with a galvanic finish and a sunburst finish. The applied indices and hands are rhodium-plated. The luminous elements and Arabic numerals are a beige finish that Sinn calls chamois, giving the watch a subdued look. The rhodium, shining on this chic dial, reflects all the nuances of light.

The result is not just a cold instrument, but a watch with character and charm – a watch that is technical yet somehow human, if you will.

Function leads to form

One big difference between this model and the original 104 is immediately apparent at first glance: the 12-hour rotating bezel.

Instead of the traditional countdown scale, a simpler, symmetrical scale has been adopted, allowing for an intuitive reading of the second time zone without any unnecessary markings.

104 Classic 12

The ceramic bezel-like scale simply features Arabic numerals from 1 to 12. However, this minimalist aesthetic emphasizes the classic atmosphere.

This change not only tidies things up visually, but also gives the watch a more refined overall look.

Another point not to be overlooked is that this ring is the first to be made from ceramic. Ceramic is a material that produces a deep luster and is also highly scratch-resistant. The satisfying click that interlocks with the movement every hour is precise, powerful, and conveys a high level of technical perfection. It's a feeling that makes me happy when I touch a Sinn watch.

Technique and Spirit

Beating beneath the dial is the Caliber SW 261-1, a reliable automatic movement with 31 jewels, ruby bearings, and a stop-seconds function. It operates at a stable 28,800 vph and has a power reserve of approximately 38 hours.

The watch can be seen through the sapphire crystal caseback, and its decoration is understated and just right, without being overly decorative. A watch is a tool, not an ornament. That is the clear statement. Nevertheless, there is no denying that it is a stunningly beautiful piece.

The case back is see-through, allowing you to enjoy the decorative finish on the movement.

Water-resistant to 20 bar, resistant to negative pressure, and housed in a polished stainless steel case with a screw-down mechanism, the 104 Classic 12 ticks all the boxes of a true instrument. And yet it's incredibly light to wear, weighing just 75g without the strap. The 41mm case is perfectly balanced on the wrist.

Between tools and value

From the moment you put it on your wrist, the 104 Classic 12 reveals a surprisingly multifaceted personality: neither too sporty nor too formal, and it is precisely this delicate balance that is at the heart of its appeal.

104 Classic 12

This design exudes a calm confidence, and is sturdy yet elegant. It's a design that makes you want to try it out at least once.

The polished case catches the light elegantly without being overbearing, the highly legible symmetrical dial layout soothes the viewer, while the ceramic bezel adds a touch of luxurious texture to the overall watch.

In short, this watch exudes presence without any self-aggrandizing. It exudes a quiet confidence.

The case's lugs are gently curved and designed to naturally conform to the wrist. The screw-down crown is easy to operate, and the buckle closes comfortably with a firm resistance, without any rattle or discomfort. There are no sharp edges or unpleasant steps anywhere; everything is smooth and precisely trimmed.

Whether at the office, on a trip, or on a weekend getaway, the 104 Classic 12 always feels natural and at home on the wrist. And the moment you take a look at the dial, you'll be captivated by its harmonious design.

The Sinn 104 Classic 12 is a modern icon in its full glory, a watch that proves with unwavering persuasion that functional watches don't have to be cold and impersonal.

The stainless steel fine-adjust bracelet version is priced at 572,000 yen (including tax), which is an astonishing price in the ever-rising watch industry. It's a perfect example of how precision, style, and advanced technology can be acquired even by those without the deepest pockets.

This watch has the spirit of a tool watch in the body of a pilot's watch, and yet it manages to pull it all together with a classic touch, all without contradiction and with quiet confidence.
