The history of the antique color known as "Kurogane"

As G-SHOCK's highest-end line, MR-G is developed with the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship, pursuing the ultimate in materials, structure, and finish. In May 2025, the "Kurogane-iro" (Iron-Colored) model, inspired by the color of iron used in ancient military equipment, was launched, generating worldwide buzz.

The new model released in November is the "MRG-B2000KT Kuroganetsuba" (Iron Tsuba), which is an even more powerful model. It boasts the highest level of craftsmanship and perfection of the "Iron Series," and is a limited edition of only 800 pieces worldwide.

Iron refers to the deep, dark blue-green color that appears when the iron used in traditional armor and other military equipment is hardened. For this latest work, the focus is on the tsuba (guard) of the Japanese sword, which can be said to represent the attitude of the samurai.

The tsuba, located between the blade and the handle, is a guard to protect the fist gripping the handle and also serves as a metal fitting to adjust the center of gravity of the sword. Although originally a practical part, during the relatively peaceful Edo period, it began to be decorated with a variety of elaborate ornaments.

Iron used in armor and other weapons is hardened to ensure its strength. The deep, dark blue-green color that appears during this process is called "iron color." Since ancient times, "iron" has meant iron, and since the Iron Age, it has been a word that refers to "weapons."

The entire exterior of a Japanese sword, including the tsuba, is called "koshirae." The MRG-B2000KT iron tsuba achieves the remarkable feat of engraving the artistic design that was once applied to the tsuba as "koshirae" into the bezel.

The phoenix motif in this piece is actually the decoration of the tsuba, which was actually made by Kobayashi, who was in charge of the engraving. The energetic expression of the phoenix and the realistic depiction of its wings are captivating.

Of course, being a G-SHOCK, it goes without saying that it is packed with multi-functional specs to suit modern lifestyles, including the world's highest level of shock resistance, 20-atmosphere water resistance, Bluetooth®, Tough Solar, and standard radio wave reception.

Yes, this watch is, so to speak, a specially tailored watch for the modern samurai. Let's take a closer look at this beautiful, reliable, and powerful watch.

The auspicious phoenix dances on the bezel

The biggest highlight is undoubtedly the engraved titanium bezel.

Tsuba from the Edo period were decorated with a wide variety of designs, all of which were one-of-a-kind. Auspicious motifs such as phoenixes, dragons, and pine trees were particularly popular.

In this piece, the phoenix design and engraving were done by Masao Kobayashi, who honed his skills as an engraver during the renovation of the shrine buildings and sacred treasures of Ise Shrine.

Masao Kobayashi

Masao Kobayashi is a metal engraver born in Shiga Prefecture in 1947. He began his career as a metal ornament maker at the age of 15, and later trained in Kyoto, where he acquired the art of metal engraving. In 2014, he was recognized as a "Contemporary Master Craftsman," and in 2018, he received the Medal with Yellow Ribbon.

"The most difficult part was figuring out how to incorporate the distinctive features of the phoenix into the thin bezel," says Kobayashi. The beautiful engraving of the phoenix's distinctive comb, baleen, and beak is a feat only a master craftsman could pull off.

The bezel is double-hardened using DLC and deep hardening processes. DLC is generally black, but Casio has the technology to give this process colors other than black, achieving both scratch resistance and a stylish design.

The bezel is meticulously engraved using the Shishi-Aibori technique, which creates a striking three-dimensional effect, creating a landscape reminiscent of a work of art. After engraving, the bezel is subjected to a deep hardening process and a green DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating, resulting in a fearless, one-of-a-kind "iron-colored bezel" resembling ancient armor.

Each of the 800 bezel engravings on this watch was handcrafted by Kobayashi himself. Compared to the dragons and tigers he has created in the past, this one took significantly more time and effort. The bezel is a concentrated expression of his craftsmanship, exuding a truly one-of-a-kind presence.

To enhance the phoenix carving, this piece is dotted with auspicious designs throughout.

The dial is decorated with an arrow feather pattern rather than the usual lines or sunburst pattern. Like the hamaya (decorative arrow), this motif is meant to ward off evil spirits, and also has the meaning of "hitting the target."

The resin indexes and inset dials have a sawtoothed design. Like the previous MRG-B2000 model, the indexes are designed to resemble the curves of a sword. The delicate decoration and sharp shape that evokes a sharp edge are the result of the molding technology of Casio's mother factory, Yamagata Casio.

This iron tsuba model, which is conscious of "modern swords," is also exceptional in its case. In addition to the processing that imitates the wavy pattern "nie" seen on the blade, the use of copper color, which was often used in the "koshirae" of swords in the past, also contributes to the tough impression.

It also has details that give it a sense of toughness and elegance at the same time.

The unique pattern on the case is created by heating and recrystallizing pure titanium. Before this process, the case is thoroughly polished, resulting in a rough, distortion-free surface.

The four screws that secure the bezel are adorned with artificial emeralds, a symbol of wisdom. These emeralds are also believed to be a talisman that helps discern the truth.

Equipped with the toughness unique to "G" and modern high functionality

The MRG-B2000KT Iron Tsuba incorporates the beauty of traditional Japanese craftsmanship throughout. Of course, as a model descended from G-SHOCK, no effort has been spared in the pursuit of toughness and practical functionality.

In addition to the unique shock-absorbing structure that supports the movement in the air, this model also uses lightweight carbon for the large hour and minute hands.

MRG-B2000KT-3AJR

Solar watches have less torque than mechanical watches, but Casio has taken the approach of using lightweight materials for the hands to make them larger, achieving a luxurious feel and excellent visibility.

When dropped, a heavy stylus may not be able to withstand the impact. However, a lightweight carbon stylus limits the impact of the impact. Its large size also ensures visibility.

Another key feature is the G-SHOCK's unique "clad guard structure" that protects the operating system. If the crown or buttons are subjected to an impact, such as when dropped, the damage will be transmitted to the directly connected module.

Therefore, shock-resistant parts were incorporated into the crown and button axes, integrating the guards with the parts. Furthermore, "α Gel®" was incorporated into the crown unit, providing more efficient shock absorption. As there is no crown guard, excellent operability was also achieved.

The impact of a fall can cause fatal damage to the internal module through the crown or push button axis. For this reason, this model uses an advanced "clad guard" structure. The red parts are "α GEL®". The model in the photo is the "MRG-B2000B-1A4JR".
*α GEL® is a registered trademark of Taica in Japan and other countries.

As mentioned above, it is also worth noting that it is equipped with all the functions essential for modern life.

The movement is radio-controlled and solar-powered with Bluetooth®, and automatically adjusts the time when connected to a smartphone.

Equipped with a high-torque dual coil motor, it enables high-speed adjustment of the hour, minute, and world time hands, and also smoothly synchronizes with the stopwatch.

MRG-B2000KT-3AJR

Not only are the hour and minute hands coated with luminous paint, but the Super Illuminator also brightens the dial, improving readability in the dark. It also features an afterglow function that glows for a few seconds after the lights are turned off.

The Super Illuminator, which uses high-brightness LEDs, is effective for checking the time in dark places. Combined with the luminous hour and minute hands, it achieves high visibility.

A modern sword, a modern talisman

A well-crafted concept, the materials and technology that make it a reality, and outstanding functionality as a watch. The MRG-B2000KT Kuroganetsuba watch exudes a spirit of pursuit to create the strongest MR-G that can be made today.

And once again, the sturdy titanium bezel of this model has been hand-engraved by a modern master craftsman with a tsuba-like ornament, while the copper-colored case has a treatment inspired by the "bo" (heated) pattern on a Japanese sword.

In other words, this "MRG-B2000KT Iron Tsuba" is a modern Japanese sword.

Now, in the 21st century, what item could replace the sword? Of course, there is more than one candidate. However, a wristwatch is perhaps the best example. Wearing the tough and beautiful MRG-B2000KT iron tsuba gives you confidence as you fight each day. It is like a talisman protecting the modern samurai from any formidable foe.
