Ulysse Nardin's Iconic Collection: The Current State of "Freaks" Innovating Tradition

2025.12.05

The way of showing time, pioneered by the original Freak, of "reading the structure itself," has progressed to a new level over the past 20 years. The Freak X Grey Enamel, available only in Japan, is given exquisite depth by the rare craftsmanship of Donze Cadrans enamel, and is at the forefront of unorthodox beauty, where 21st century innovation resonates with 17th century traditional techniques.

FREAK “X GREY ENAMEL”
FREAK “S ENAMEL BLUE & RED”

The Freak S, the pinnacle of Freak technology, is a watch that translates the "movement itself" created by two tilted silicon balance wheels into the language of time. The blue and red Franke enamel, which can only be produced in a very limited number of workshops today, vividly reflects the complex movement, creating a scene like a small mechanical theater on the wrist.

The Freak X features a unique time display using a flying carousel, and is optimized for everyday use with the Cal. UN-230 automatic movement and crown operation. Made of lightweight titanium with DLC coating, the silicon escapement and approximately 72-hour power reserve ensure stable accuracy. This is the first time that the "DONZÉ ÉMAIL" signature appears next to the gray enamel hour wheel. Automatic (Cal. UN-230). 21 jewels. 21,600 vph. Approximately 72-hour power reserve. Ti case (43mm diameter, 13.38mm thick). Water resistant to 50m. Limited to 25 pieces in Japan. Price: 7,007,000 yen (tax included).

Ulysse Nardin's innovations have always shone a light on the "beyond common sense."

The arrival of the first Freak in 2001, which had no hands, dial, or even a crown, gave a new shape to the very concept of a wristwatch. Since the Maison's founding in 1846, the precision cultivated in marine chronometers, the complexity honed in astronomical clocks, and the innovativeness of the first full-scale introduction of silicon into watchmaking have all been poured into establishing the Maison's iconic collection, the Freak.

This season, the Freak lineage has expanded its range with three new pieces: Freak X Grey Enamel, Freak S Blue Enamel, and Freak S Red Enamel. The avant-garde rotating structure is overlaid with a rare enamel technique inherited by Donze Cadrans, a renowned Ulysse Nardin subsidiary. The guilloched pattern engraved beneath the transparent layer changes shape depending on the light, echoing the Freak's distinctive trajectory.

Donzé Cadrans is an enamel workshop founded in 1972, and has been responsible for Ulysse Nardin's Métiers d'Art since 2011. Its eight skilled artisans, including veterans with over 30 years of experience, continue to preserve a variety of traditional techniques, including grand feu, cloisonné, champlevé, and guilloche flinqué. The flinqué enamel process used in the new piece involves placing finely crushed enamel powder on a guilloche engraved on a white gold disc, then repeatedly firing at around 800°C and cooling. Even slight changes in temperature and humidity can affect the finish, and it takes a minimum of 8 to 12 hours to complete a single piece. It goes without saying that these pieces are rare, as they are not mass-produced.

The three enamel colors all feature layers of light that are tailored to match the "moving stage" of the rotating disc, each achieving a different texture. The Freak X Grey enamel, a first for the collection, uses a clear grey to tighten the carousel's trajectory and guide the UN-230 automatic movement into understated shadows. The guilloched lines that emerge through the enamel change their appearance slightly, creating a concentrated three-dimensional effect against the black background of the black DLC titanium. It has a truly special presence, worthy of being limited to 25 pieces in Japan.

The innovative Freak S features two large balance wheels tilted at 20 degrees, connected by a vertical differential to average out vibrations and improve stability. Its six-layered three-dimensional design spatially positions the complex mechanism, and it features a highly efficient grinder automatic winding system. The enamel disc visualizes the rotational trajectory, clearly illustrating the mechanism's breathing. Automatic winding (Cal. UN-251). 33 jewels. 18,000 vph. Power reserve of approximately 72 hours. Ti case (45mm diameter, 16.65mm thick). Water resistant to 30m. Limited to 50 pieces worldwide. 26,752,000 yen each (tax included).

Meanwhile, the Freak S Enamel represents the pinnacle of Maison technology. Equipped with two silicon balance wheels tilted at 20 degrees, the world's smallest vertical differential evens out their beating. The multi-layered layout created by the six-plane structure is combined with a highly efficient grinder automatic winding for approximately 72 hours of power. The addition of a turquoise blue or deep red enamel disc creates a vivid afterimage as the movement rotates, creating a unique scene where the mechanism and color work together.

The underlying philosophy of both the Freak X and Freak S is that "the mechanism itself speaks" without relying on hands. The unique display logic, in which the progress of the rotating movement directly tells the passage of time, overlaps with the layers of light created by the enamel, renewing the way we perceive time. The blending of the flickering light, the shifting shadows, and the atmosphere created by the rotation creates the "pleasure of reading" that is unique to Freak.

Innovation and tradition. Or cutting-edge and classic. Freak has always expressed a unique time by moving back and forth between these two extremes. This new enamel piece clearly depicts this intersection and embodies the Maison's spirit in its purest form.

FREAK “X”

The Freak X brings the innovations of the original Freak to a standard that can be used daily. While retaining the concept of reading the time by rotating the mechanism rather than by hands, the Freak X has achieved a perfect balance between avant-garde and practicality by thoroughly refining the exterior, operability, and wearability. The three regular models offer surprisingly different looks and reading experience when the rotating mechanism is changed.

Freak X

Freak X
The anti-reflective DLC titanium exterior deeply depicts the shadows of the rotating mechanism. The black finish reflects almost no metallic light, highlighting the movement of the operating bridges and gears like a twinkling shadow. Highly scratch-resistant, this watch offers avant-garde aesthetics for everyday use. The back of the Freak X is encased in a lightweight titanium case that quietly supports the Caliber UN-230 movement, the core of the flying carousel display. Unlike typical see-through cases, this watch's design prioritizes protection over display, providing a robust foundation for integrating this avant-garde mechanism into everyday life. Automatic movement (Caliber UN-230). 21 jewels. 21,600 vph. Power reserve of approximately 72 hours. Ti case (43mm diameter, 13.38mm thick). Water resistant to 50m. Price: ¥4,565,000 (tax included).

The Freak X is a model that takes the original Freak's concept of "reading time by rotating" and translates it into something that is easy to use in everyday life. While inheriting the unique display mechanism in which an hour disc indicates the hours and a bridge indicates the minutes, it has achieved a perfect balance between innovation and practicality by improving operability, visibility, and wearability. When worn on the wrist, the movement of the mechanism gently slips into view, and the way the time appears to change - this sensation is the essence of the Freak X.

The first thing to note is the change in the operating concept. The bezel-operated time setting, which was a symbol of the original Freak, has been abandoned, and the current Freak X is now equipped with the more common crown operation. The movement is the UN-230 automatic, and the stable speed regulation of the silicon escapement and approximately 72 hours of power reserve ensure reliable operation without any sense of complexity. This refinement of the structure connects the Freak philosophy itself to our everyday sense of time.

The Freak X's display is an even more refined and user-friendly version of Freak's unique logic, which intuitively reads "rotation angle = elapsed time." Because there are no fixed elements obstructing the display, the field of view is open, allowing for three-dimensional movement and changing shadows to shape the reading experience, leading to the sense that time is not "displayed" but "emerging from movement." This freshness of reading has been inherited from the original Freak.

The three models have completely different looks depending on the material.

The black DLC titanium has a low-reflection exterior that highlights the contours of the mechanism. The black finish, with its subdued metallic sheen, highlights the moving bridges and gears as flickering shadows, adding a sense of tautness to the Freak X's inherent structural beauty. It also has excellent scratch resistance, making it a solid choice for handling complex mechanisms on a daily basis.

Freak X

Freak X
The two models, blue and rose gold, offer contrasting exterior designs and a comfortable fit. The blue model takes advantage of the benefits of lightweight titanium, achieving a light and comfortable fit that won't tire you out even after wearing it for long periods of time. The rose gold model takes advantage of its specific gravity to achieve a stable center of gravity, creating a calm feeling on the wrist. Blue dial & titanium DLC case: 4,565,000 yen (tax included). Black dial & 18KRG + Ti case: 6,325,000 yen (tax included). Both are automatic (Cal. UN-230). 21 jewels. 21,600 vph. Power reserve approximately 72 hours. Diameter 43mm, thickness 13.38mm. Water resistant to 50m.

On the other hand, blue is the specification that brings out the Freak X's structure in the most delicate lines. The blue PVD applied to lightweight titanium catches the light faithfully, clearly showing the trajectory of the flying carousel. The movement of the bridge blends seamlessly into the space, creating a sense of freedom in the field of vision, allowing even first-time visitors to experience the Freak's unique dynamic movement in a straightforward manner.

The rose gold, on the other hand, offers a more subdued look than the previous two. The high density of the gold provides a stable center of gravity that firmly supports the rhythm of the rotating structure on the wrist, and when the light hits it, a rich texture appears on the surface. The hybrid structure with titanium makes it comfortable to wear, and as a watch that adds a warm and refined touch to its avant-garde style, it blends naturally into both business and formal settings.

What stands out across all three models is the fact that the time expression, "spoken through the structure," takes on completely different contours depending on the material. While equipped with the same UN-230, the differences in color and texture change the way the rotation appears, and even the tempo of the movement gives a different impression. This is a "time expression" that is unique to Freak X, something that can never be seen in a typical three-hand watch.

The Freak X is a watch that reconnects the innovative path pioneered by the original Freak to real time. The structure moves, the light reflects, and the wrist absorbs it all. This interplay subtly renews the act of telling time, bringing a quiet uplift to everyday scenes. With its three distinct personalities, the Freak X is a "completed form" that reconnects the Freak philosophy to the modern era.

FREAK “ONE”

"No hands, no dial, no crown" - the Freak One is a new style that inherits this concept from the original Freak in 2001 in its purest form and redefines it for modern specifications. Its strong individuality, honed over more than 20 years, remains the core of the Freak lineage.

Freak One

Freak One
The Freak One is a model that purely inherits the idea of "indicating time with a flying carousel." Its structure, which does away with hands, dial, and crown, puts the movement of the mechanism in the spotlight, symbolizing Ulysse Nardin's innovative spirit. In 2023, it will receive the Iconic Watch Award at the GPHG (Grand Prix de la Watchée de Genève). Automatic winding (Cal. UN-240). 15 jewels. 21,600 vph. Power reserve of approximately 90 hours. 18KRG + Ti case (diameter 44mm, thickness 13.37mm). Water resistant to 30m. Price: 12,056,000 yen (tax included).
