The ever-evolving "5000" series

The first G-SHOCK, the DW-5000C, released in 1983, was a truly epoch-making product that overturned the common belief that wristwatches were vulnerable to shocks. Its shock resistance was achieved through a hollow structure that supported the internal module, protrusions on the four corners of the square case, a protruding bezel, and a curved band, but this was based on the premise of a flexible resin exterior, and it was thought that it would be difficult to achieve the same specifications with a metal exterior.

The model that broke through this barrier was the MRG-100, which was released in 1996. A new bumper protection structure was developed, inspired by automobile bumpers, and its successor, the MR-G, a high-end G-SHOCK model, was made entirely from metal, from the case to the band, and continues to be loved by fans.

The origin of G-SHOCK, the "Origin," was first made fully metal with the "GMW-B5000" in 2018. Since then, full metal models in the "5000" and "2100" series have gradually expanded the lineup.

This time, we will be reviewing the GMW-BZ5000GD-9JF, one of the latest full metal G-SHOCK models released in 2025. Based on the classic 5000 series of G-SHOCK, what kind of innovations does this model hide within its traditional design?

This is a new full-metal model for 2025, featuring a gold-IP-finished stainless steel case and bracelet. It features an MIP LCD screen, Tough Solar technology, and a battery life of approximately 22 months on a full charge (in power save mode). Its stainless steel case measures 49.3mm long x 43.6mm wide, and is 13mm thick. It's water resistant to 20 bar. It's priced at 102,300 yen (tax included).

A full metal exterior created in collaboration with AI

While the square case is a familiar design, this model features a new structure that connects the bezel and center case at the top and bottom. This structure was developed through collaboration with AI, based on shock resistance data accumulated over the 40 years since the birth of G-SHOCK. Casio actively utilizes AI in the development of G-SHOCK, and the concept model "G-D001," announced to commemorate the 40th anniversary, features an 18K yellow gold case with a unique design that would be hard to imagine, with multiple supports supporting the case.

While the front view of this model is no different from the previous 5000 series, the side view is completely fresh. The gold-colored bezel and black center case fit together precisely, with gold-colored push buttons shining between them. It almost looks like a spaceship from a science fiction movie. You might not even look at the side of the case very often, but you'll find yourself captivated. Although it's not visible from the outside, there is a resin inner protector built between the bezel and center case that absorbs shocks through elastic deformation, which is also a key factor in increasing impact resistance.

The case features a new structure in which the bezel and center case are connected at the top and bottom. This design was born from collaboration with AI.

The gold color of this watch is the result of IP. Gold coatings can sometimes look cheap depending on the color, but the slightly dark color of this watch gives it a luxurious feel. The top of the bezel has a vertical hairline, while the rest is polished. Four separate black parts are attached to the top of the lugs, securing the bezel and center case and adding a design accent. The case back is screwed down. G-SHOCK achieves 20 bar water resistance even with a screw-down case back, but in theory, a screw-down case back is easier to maintain for long periods of time.

The screw-back case back has the module number and specifications printed on it.

The bracelet is completely coated with gold-colored IP, including the backs of the links and the inside of the clasp, which are usually not visible. While I would have thought each link would be secured with a press-fit pin, it's actually secured with a spring bar, which is unusual. Many of the links are adjustable, so even those with slimmer wrists will be able to adjust the watch to fit perfectly. The tops of the links feature dimples that mimic the design of a resin band.

The clasp opens and closes with a push button. There is nothing particularly noteworthy about the mechanism, but it is simple and easy to use.

The clasp is a three-fold type that opens and closes with a push button. It is simple and sturdy. There is no fine adjustment mechanism that can be used with one touch, but it can be adjusted in four steps by poking a pin into the hole on the side of the clasp. It is a simple and straightforward design that is hard to break, and another plus is that the clasp is not overly thick.

The joint between the case and bracelet has a structure where the convex and concave parts on the case (3) and the bracelet (2) interlock. This is a feature inherited from the GMW-B5000, which was released in 2018.

The clasp is a three-fold type with a thick plate, and can be adjusted in four steps by inserting a pin into the side hole.

Clear and easy-to-read MIP LCD

Another major feature of this model is that it is equipped with a memory-in-pixel (MIP) LCD, which is a significant evolution from conventional LCDs. MIP LCDs have a full-dot display, which means that they can display more natural and smooth numbers, rather than the angular numbers seen on 7-segment displays. Furthermore, they boast a wide viewing angle, making them easier to see from an angle than regular LCDs. Their high contrast makes them easy to see even outdoors in strong sunlight.

The MIP LCD is easy to view even from an angle, overcoming the narrow viewing angle that was a weakness of digital displays.

Taking advantage of this high-resolution MIP LCD, this model's main time display can be switched between four types: Type A (simultaneous display of two cities' times), Type B (date + day of the week), Type C (year + date + day of the week), and Type D (simultaneous display of three cities' times), and the display can be changed by pressing the ADJUST button at 10 o'clock. Depending on the type, the characters may be very small, but the high contrast makes them easy to read.

This model also comes equipped with a mobile link function that allows it to be connected to a smartphone via Bluetooth and various settings can be made using a dedicated app. This function can also be used to change the display to the familiar 7-segment display.

The time display screen on Type A. It has high resolution and contrast, so even small characters can be read clearly.

G-SHOCK's signature multi-functionality

G-SHOCK is known for its wide range of features. This model also comes equipped with a full range of functions. First of all, it has Tough Solar, a highly efficient solar-powered system. It eliminates the need for periodic battery changes, eliminating the hassle of worrying about unexpected battery failure. Once fully charged, even without solar power generation, the watch can maintain power for approximately six months under normal use, and approximately 22 months in power-saving mode.

Adjusting the time is also hassle-free. The watch is equipped with a time standard radio wave reception function compatible with Japan, North America, Europe, and China, and can automatically correct the time by receiving these radio waves periodically. Furthermore, the mobile link function allows you to connect to a smartphone and correct the time.

Additionally, by pressing the MODE button at 8 o'clock, you can switch between world time, alarm, stopwatch, and timer modes. You can also turn on the LED light by pressing the button at 2 o'clock. While the brightness isn't particularly high, this makes it easy to read the time even in the dark.

Get excited! Shiny gold G-SHOCK

When you actually wear it, you feel the exhilaration that only a gold-colored watch can provide. Even though it's not solid gold, its brilliance excites the wearer. It may be extremely difficult to match it with a business suit, but the sense of freedom it offers in casual settings is something you can't get from a strict dress watch. The slightly darker color and the hairline on the bezel and bracelet give it a luxurious and calm feel without looking cheap.

The bracelet is also full gold, and features dimples reminiscent of a resin band.

Because it is made of full metal, you can enjoy a moderate weight. Although the head is quite heavy, the weight balance is good, perhaps due to the thickness of the bracelet.

And what's most appealing about the new model is its MIP LCD, which offers excellent visibility. It's easy to see even from an angle, and you can read the time clearly even in slightly dimly lit places. Compared to previous LCDs, it can now display more detail, so modes that were previously abbreviated as "AL" or "ST" are now displayed as "ALARM" or "STOP WATCH," making it easier to see at a glance what function the screen represents. I'm also happy that the days of the week are now spelled out in full.

The stopwatch mode screen clearly displays "STOP WATCH" without any abbreviation. The time is displayed in the upper right corner, allowing you to check the time while measuring the elapsed time.

It looks great, functions well, and, although I wasn't able to test it, it's also exceptionally shock-resistant and water-resistant. This gold-colored model isn't a watch that can be worn in all situations. However, when it's timed, it provides unparalleled satisfaction. What a luxurious model, allowing you to experience the magic of color along with the power of a G-SHOCK.
