Choose a watch that dares to break away from the norm
Famous brands often have collections that are widely known and can be called their "faces." However, within each brand's long history and vast archives, there are many timepieces that are worthy of being called masterpieces, even if they are not as well-known as their faces.
Choosing such a niche model is not simply about being "out there" or "contrarian," but rather about expressing confidence by not relying on the security and status that come with a classic model. Step away from the hustle and bustle of the watch industry, focused on trends and resale value, and wear a watch that resonates with your own sensibilities. Such a watch will look great on the wrist of an adult with a strong sense of style who knows the classics through years of experience, but also goes his own way. And even if you happen to see someone wearing the same watch on the street or in a business setting, you can still enjoy the momentary empathy of being in the know.
In this article, we will introduce five niche but highly effective models hidden in the lineups of well-known brands as good examples of such choices. Why not try out these models that offer a sophisticated look while still retaining the status and reassurance of after-sales service?
Omega "De Ville Prestige" Ref. 434.23.42.22.10.001
The prestigious Swiss brand Omega is known for its timepieces with many anecdotes, such as the Speedmaster, which was adopted as NASA's official equipment, and the Seamaster, which appeared in the film "007." If you're looking for a more "offbeat" option than these classic sports models, then the De Ville Prestige collection is the one to watch.

Automatic (Cal. 8936). 39 jewels. 25,200 vph. Power reserve approximately 60 hours. SS x 18K Yellow Gold case (diameter 42mm, thickness 12.27mm). Water resistant to 30m. 1,419,000 yen (tax included). (Inquiries) Omega Tel. 0570-000087
This collection will be revamped into its third generation in 2022, with a thinner case and a more minimalist redesign of the dial, further refining its dressy appearance. Furthermore, it has also acquired Master Chronometer certification, a modern OMEGA standard, making it particularly noteworthy that while it is an elegant dress watch, it also ensures practicality suitable for everyday use.
Among them, the Ref. 434.23.42.22.10.001 is one of the few watches in Omega's lineup to feature a pointer date. The date display is located around the inner periphery of the dial and is indicated by a date hand with a crescent moon tip, giving it a particularly classic look.
The case is crafted from a combination of 18K yellow gold and stainless steel. Paired with a subdued pine green dial and matching leather strap, it creates a chic yet elegant look. The movement is the Cal. 8936, boasting a power reserve of approximately 60 hours. The transparent case back allows visitors to admire the rotor, which is decorated with arabesque motifs.
Breitling Premier B01 Chronograph 42, Ref. AB0145331K1P2
Breitling, which claims to be an "instrument for professionals," primarily produces timepieces that pursue functional beauty, such as the Navitimer, which is equipped with a rotary slide rule, and the all-purpose sports watch, the Chronomat. Here, we will focus on the Ref. AB0145331K1P2 from the Premier collection, which pursues a different kind of elegance.

Automatic winding (Cal. 01). 41 jewels. 28,800 vph. Power reserve approximately 70 hours. Stainless steel case (diameter 42 mm, thickness 13.6 mm). Water resistant to 10 bar. 1,248,500 yen (tax included). (Inquiries) Breitling Japan Tel. 03-3436-0011
The Premier, launched in 1943, was the brand's first chronograph designed with an elegant style in mind. After a period of discontinuation, it was relaunched in 2018 and redesigned in 2021. Today, it is part of a timeless collection reminiscent of classic timepieces.
The Ref. AB0145331K1P2 features an eye-catching, warm copper-colored dial. The bicompax layout, which omits some of the Arabic numerals and highlights the subdial, gives it a strong vintage feel. The brown alligator strap, which matches the dial color, creates a subdued look that complements a suit.
Inside the case is the in-house movement, Cal. 01, which is widely used in flagship models. It combines a power reserve of approximately 70 hours with COSC-certified high precision, and coupled with the case's 10 bar water resistance, it ensures the functionality you'd expect from a practical watch.
Rolex "Perpetual 1908" Ref. 52508
Rolex is a globally renowned brand, and because of its popularity, most of its collections are widely known, making it difficult to choose a model that is unlikely to be seen on someone else. However, if you still want to choose a watch that stands out, the Perpetual 1908, which does not have the Oyster case that is synonymous with the brand, would be a suitable timepiece.

Automatic winding (Cal. 7140). 38 jewels. 28,800 vph. Power reserve approximately 66 hours. 18K yellow gold case (diameter 39mm). Water resistant to 50m.
The Perpetual 1908 is a classic watch that bears the year the brand was founded, and was introduced as the successor to the Cellini, which had long been the brand's dress line. It features a profile typical of a dress watch, such as a slim case and an elegant dial with a small second hand, as well as a delicately designed bezel that combines domes and fluting.
The model we picked up is the gorgeous Ref. 52508, which lavishly uses 18K yellow gold for the case and bracelet. Of particular note is the "Settimo bracelet" developed specifically for this model. Compared to the five-link Jubilee bracelet commonly used by Rolex, this bracelet is made up of seven smaller links, with slightly curved, polished links creating a jewelry-like appearance.
The movement is the Cal. 7140, which boasts a high accuracy of ±2 seconds per day after casing and a power reserve of approximately 66 hours. The ability to view the watch through the transparent caseback, which is still rare among current Rolex models, makes this an elegant choice that sets it apart from the standard collection.
G-SHOCK "MRG-B2100D-2AJR"
Among the Japanese brands, we'll be looking at Casio's "G-SHOCK." It goes without saying that this watch boasts global recognition, but because of its vast variety, it's rare to find someone else wearing the exact same model, so long as you stick to the classics. However, if you're a mature man looking to choose, why not try the "MR-G," the highest-end line that strives for quality?

Tough Solar. Approximately 18 months of operation when fully charged (power save mode). Ti case (49.5mm x 44.4mm, 13.6mm thick). 20 ATM water resistant. 572,000 yen (tax included). (Inquiries) Casio Computer Customer Service Tel. 0120-088925
The Ref. MRG-B2100D-2AJR we picked out is a watch from the popular "2100" series, known for its slim octagonal shape, reconstructed to MR-G standards.
The dial, which incorporates the indigo blue of indigo dyeing, a dye that has been popular in Japan since ancient times, is noteworthy. This expresses the morning mist that envelops a five-story pagoda, a sight that can be seen in the mountains of Yamagata Prefecture, where the MR-G is manufactured. This gives the dial, which is inspired by the traditional architectural technique of "kigumi," an elegance that is further enhanced by a deep Japanese charm.
The case is made of durable yet lightweight titanium. The bezel is divided into 27 individual parts, assembled with cushioning material sandwiched between them, achieving distortion-free polishing and the toughness you expect from a G-SHOCK. Furthermore, the top bezel is made of Cobalion, an alloy that boasts approximately four times the hardness of pure titanium, and its high-quality, edgy design exudes the dignity of a luxury watch.
In terms of functionality, the watch is equipped with standard radio wave reception, smartphone connectivity, and solar power generation. By capturing light through tiny lattice-like gaps in the dial, it ensures good power generation efficiency without compromising the design.
Chanel "Monsieur de Chanel Superleggera" Ref. H6823
When it comes to men's watches, Chanel is known for its genderless collections, such as the "J12" and "Boyfriend," which reflect the philosophy of a high fashion brand and allow people to share values regardless of gender. Among them, the "Monsieur de Chanel" stands out. As the name "Monsieur" (a French term of respect for a man) suggests, this watch is a special timepiece designed by Chanel exclusively for men.

Manual winding (Cal. 1). 30 jewels. 28,800 vph. Power reserve approximately 72 hours. Highly resistant matte black ceramic and stainless steel case (42mm diameter). Water resistant to 30m. 759 million yen (tax included). (Inquiries) Chanel (Customer Care) Tel. 0120-525-519
The Superleggera Ref. H6823 is a model that shows a unique worldview within the collection, focusing on racing machines. The dial features the "Superleggera" logo, which means "ultralight" in Italian, and pays homage to the highest level racing machines of the 1950s.
The geometric face design is the same as the regular model, but the exterior is made of highly resistant matte black ceramic, ensuring lightness and robustness. Furthermore, the dial is decorated with guilloched details reminiscent of the front mesh of a sports car, and the combination of a nylon strap with a red lining reflects the lightness and boldness of a racing car, down to the smallest details.
Inside is the Cal. 1 movement, the first of its kind designed, developed, precision-tested, and assembled by the brand. It features both a jumping hour and retrograde minute display, and the mechanism, finished in the same black as the exterior, can be seen through the transparent case back.
