Victorinox's challenge to incorporate the DNA of tools into watches

Victorinox purposefully translates its iconic toolmaking DNA into watch design through industrial finishes like milled bezels and material innovations. In this article, we explore how these influences shape the Journey 1884 and INOX collections.

It was more than 35 years ago that the world's most famous pocket knife manufacturer introduced its first wristwatch to feature the "Cross and Shield" logo on the dial. With the "Journey 1884" collection, launched in 2023, the brand aimed to bring the energy of the Swiss mountains to everyday adventures.

The collection offers both quartz and automatic movements, a variety of dials (blue, green, black) and a wide range of options, including wooden straps. But this design code is more than just a collection; it also underpins the new INOX Chrono, combining powerful geometric shapes with Swiss precision engineering.

Journey 1884 with a Swiss soul

Journey 1884 pays homage to its roots down to the smallest detail: the hands are modeled after Swiss hiking signs, the dial evokes the rough texture of natural mountain trails, and the counterweight of the second hand features the silhouette of a Swiss Army knife.

The notch at 6 o'clock on the bezel looks as if it was carved out with a sharp knife, and the material code symbolizing the company's industrial roots and the year of its founding, 1884, are engraved on the bezel.

The quartz models are anti-magnetic and feature a red logo at 12 o'clock, while the automatic mechanical models feature an engraved ceramic bezel insert and a see-through caseback that allows you to view the movement in action.

The watch also features a distinctive color scheme inspired by the yellow hiking signs found throughout Switzerland, including the scale and second hand. The 43mm case is water resistant to 200m and shock-resistant according to ISO standards, and is made with a high percentage of recycled steel, making it both environmentally friendly and robust.

The pinnacle of industrial codes: INOX Chrono

"INOX" is Victorinox's most iconic watch collection and the source of a new design approach. The new "INOX Chrono" combines elegance with powerful geometric shapes, functionality and innovative materials.

Diversification resulting from approximately 140 years of history

When you think of Victorinox, many people think of this tool knife.

Victorinox, which began as a small knife workshop in 1884, has now grown into a global company representing Switzerland, skillfully reflecting its original product design in each category, including multi-tool knives, watches, travel gear, and fragrances.

Their design approach is unique yet natural, and when combined with functionality and reliability, they create products that are suitable for any situation.

The Victorinox Watch Competence Center in the Swiss Jura region handles everything from engineering to manufacturing and assembly. The company's in-house production of key components such as bezels and cases proves that Victorinox watches are not just fashion items, but true precision instruments.
