I actually tried wearing the Apple Watch Ultra 3

The first time I wore the Apple Watch Ultra 3 was on a chilly autumn morning. Its size of 49mm in height and 44mm in width makes it quite noticeable on the wrist. Despite its impressive size, it's also lightweight at just under 62g, so it won't get in the way of your morning run. Apple calls it "the most advanced Apple Watch ever."

Apple Watch Ultra 3
Ti case (49mm long, 44mm wide, 14.4mm thick). Water resistant to 100m. Starting at 129,800 yen (tax included).

The textile loop strap fits comfortably into the overall look: soft, high-quality, and easy to replace. But Apple still doesn't offer it in smaller sizes, which means the watch can still look bulky on smaller wrists.

Bigger, brighter and always visible

From a visual perspective, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is faithful to its predecessor. At least at first glance, it retains the same shape as its predecessor. But Apple has made better use of the existing space. In short, it has slimmed down the screen's borders to create the largest display area ever on an Apple Watch.

The new generation LTPO3 display uses wide-viewing OLED for incredible visibility from nearly any angle, and the always-on display now operates at 1Hz, enabling for the first time a smooth moving second hand and animated time functions without wrist movement.

The 422x514 pixel resolution delivers exceptionally clear content with deep blacks and a peak brightness of over 3000 nits, making it ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who often find themselves in bright sunlight.

The combination of titanium case and sapphire crystal proved extremely durable in real-world use: the watch didn't sustain a single scratch or dent during testing. It's also water-resistant to 100m, making it a reliable companion for water sports and wet weather adventures.

This model features a titanium case with accent lines on the side of the case. The waypoint dial, which displays a compass and navigation, is perfect for outdoor use.

The new "Waypoints" watch face further demonstrates Apple's commitment to the outdoors. Its central location allows intuitive access to functions like the compass, navigation, and night mode. Familiar gestures, including the high-precision double-tap, work just as smoothly as the Apple Watch Series 11.

Connect longer, travel longer

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 lasts for about 42 hours, or about 72 hours in low-power mode, which is longer than any previous Apple Watch model, but still far short of the roughly one-week battery life of many Garmin models.

It can send SOS signals via satellite even in places where LTE signals are unavailable. It will be available in Japan from December 2025, and there is currently no charge for communication via satellite.

The biggest leap forward is the ability to send and receive SOS and messages via satellite. Even relatively newer models of the iPhone support this satellite communication. The key point is that both devices now allow you to send "help" calls in extreme situations when your life is in danger. It can be used to make emergency calls, send location information, and as a means of communication in an emergency. Even if you go to a place where there is no LTE connection and become isolated, as long as you have this device you can contact via satellite in an emergency.

New function to alert you to signs of high blood pressure

One of the notable features is the "High Blood Pressure Pattern Notifications" feature, which became available in Japan on December 4, 2025. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 analyzes daily heart rate data for 30 days and notifies you if there is a tendency toward high blood pressure based on long-term changes in heart rate data.

However, since this function does not directly measure blood pressure, it is recommended that users visit a medical institution. Isn't it significant that a device worn daily can alert users to lifestyle-related risks that may not be noticeable to them?

Sleep, fitness, and motivation

A new feature, "Sleep Score," has also been added to watchOS 26, which is included in this game. Data such as heart rate, respiration rate, blood oxygen wellness, and sleep stages are no longer simply displayed; instead, they are compiled and presented as a comprehensive score. Additionally, a feature unique to the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is that the built-in high blood pressure sensor detects abnormal blood pressure patterns during sleep and reflects this in the sleep score.

In addition, the new AI Workout Buddy feature implemented in watchOS 26 goes beyond simple encouragement. Apple Intelligence analyzes heart rate variability and terrain data in real time. For example, if you're running, it will suggest actions through your AirPods, such as "Slow down on the uphill section and save your stamina for the last 2km."

This feature will also act as a personal coach for many other sports. The selling point of this new feature, "AI Workout Buddy," is that it uses data collected by high-precision sensors to clearly indicate the actions you should take.

Apple Watch-like design. Choice of straps

Now, let's take a look at the design. This is very much like an Apple Watch. The case is made of titanium, and you can choose from two colors: the titanium color or black. You can also choose the strap when you purchase it.

You can choose the strap when purchasing. From left to right, there are three straps: Ocean Band, Alpine Loop, and Trail Loop.

First up is the "Alpine Loop," which uses fabric and fastens securely with a buckle. As the name suggests, it seems to be intended for use in mountain climbing and hiking. The lineup also includes the "Trail Loop," which is also made of fabric but fastens with Velcro for a more casual look, making it more suitable for sports.

Next, there's the Ocean Band, which uses a flexible tubular fluoroelastomer suitable for diving, and the Titanium Milanese Loop, which gives an urban impression. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 can be enjoyed with styles suitable for both the office and outdoors.

Design meets adventure

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is a smartwatch that combines performance, safety, design, and health features at a level that clearly positions it in the premium segment. It could be said to be a competent, fully equipped answer to adventure-focused smartwatches like the Garmin Fenix 8 Pro, with all the comforts of a modern smartwatch.

It's not cheap, starting at ¥129,800 depending on the strap combination, but for those who enjoy outdoor sports, travel frequently, value extensive health data, or simply want the most technologically advanced Apple Watch, this could be the right choice.

But I do have one regret: the Apple Watch Ultra 3 only works with iPhones. It's not for Android users, and even iPhone users need to pair it with a compatible iPhone. But for everyone else, the watch is a companion that can "think, inspire, and even save your life in an emergency," even in a world without cell phone reception.
