Celebrating its 30th anniversary since its launch in 1996, the Vacheron Constantin "Overseas" collection, themed around travel, has gained popularity for its high level of practicality and sporty design. Now, it is known not only as a masterpiece of the maison but also as a representative of "luxury sports" watches. The three axes that make up the Overseas
Since its initial launch in 1996, the "Overseas" celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Its origins can be traced back to the "222" of 1977, and its integrated bracelet style is categorized as "luxury sports." However, with a perspective on great journeys and the expanding world, the collection has set sail for its own unique sporty chic.
The name itself embodies a longing for the world beyond the seas, and the sporty design with a bracelet conveys a sense of dynamism. This collection, in fact, reflects the inquisitive spirit and mindset of François Constantin, one of the maison's founders. François's spirit, which led him to travel the world to expand sales channels, is evident in the practical functions for travelers, such as water resistance and magnetic resistance, and his spirit of inquiry can be seen in the collection's continuous evolution.
The Maison's Pillar collection now boasts a wide variety of models, including tourbillons, perpetual calendars, dual time displays, and chronographs. Let's explore its appeal from three perspectives.
1. Various color dials

The dial features a sunburst satin base, layered with gold and navy lacquer, and then coated with a clear lacquer. The counters, the same color as the dial, have a snail-finish base, creating a contrasting nuance. Automatic movement (Cal. 1120 QP). 36 jewels. 19,800 vibrations/hour. Power reserve of approximately 40 hours. 18K yellow gold case (41.5mm diameter, 8.1mm thickness). 5 ATM water resistance. 20,592,000 yen (including tax).
One of the collection's defining features is the variety of dial colors. Colored dials give watches a new personality and a modern feel. Even classic, standard styles take on a fresh impression, and this is certainly true for sporty-chic collections like the Overseas.
In addition to basic silver and black, the collection includes a variety of colors that evoke the excitement of travel, such as blue reminiscent of the sky and sea, champagne gold, burgundy, and green. The delicate sunray finish spreads from the center outwards, and multiple layers of lacquer are applied, allowing the sunburst pattern beneath the paint film to emerge. This creates a sense of depth and a rich expression that changes with the reflection of light.

The color selection process involves not only verifying the color using Pantone color charts and color calibration monitors, but also creating multiple prototype dials and refining the final tone while considering how it harmonizes with the case material. Even the same blue color can have different hues depending on the individual model, and development can sometimes take several years.
A perspective from Masayuki Hirota, Editor-in-Chief of Chronos Japan.
Founded in 1755, Vacheron Constantin didn't achieve its global fame simply by producing exceptionally high-quality watches. One of the things that has made this long-established brand more than just a historical manufacturer is its innovative approach to watch exteriors. Since the 1930s, the company has incorporated various designs into its cases, a practice that continued even after the 1960s when mass production of watches was established. Now, Vacheron Constantin is tackling a new expression in dial design. By adding colorful lacquer-finished dials to its sporty-chic "Overseas" model, the company has given a fresh touch to this luxurious "luxury sports" watch. The choice of colors is exquisite. Vivid colors make a watch stand out, but often lack a sense of luxury. Subtle colors are luxurious, but lack novelty. In contrast, Vacheron Constantin has struck a good balance, adding a new personality to its classic sporty watch. The use of color is new, but never excessive. This was made possible by the long experience of a long-established brand.
2. Thin case even for complex models
Another characteristic of the Overseas is its slim case. Despite its sporty design, its slim profile allows it to offer the elegance and comfortable fit of a dress watch. This is made possible by the in-house thin movement and case construction.

The current collection, introduced in 2016, features the in-house Cal. 5100 with a central seconds hand. By concentrating the gear train at the center, it creates space for additional functions while keeping the thickness down. Based on this, the dual-time Cal. 5110DT and the chronograph Cal. 5200 were developed.
Furthermore, even with complex mechanisms, the watch maintains its slim profile. The "Overseas Extra-Flat Perpetual Calendar" incorporates a perpetual calendar mechanism as a module into the proven ultra-thin Cal. 1120, and houses the ultra-thin automatic Cal. 2160, which employs a peripheral rotor to reduce the overall height for the tourbillon.

In addition to this thin movement, the overall height of the bezel and the side profile of the middle case have been narrowed, and the thickness of the curved lugs and case back has been reduced to create a thin appearance and comfortable fit.
A perspective from Yukiya Suzuki, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Japanese edition of Chronos.
When it comes to Vacheron Constantin's slim models, the Cal. 1120 series, which the maison has used for many years, is symbolic. With this ultra-thin automatic movement, backed by history and proven performance, as its core, they have succeeded in keeping the thickness of even perpetual calendars to just over 4mm. This design philosophy is also carried over to their current in-house developed movements, achieving overall thinness by efficiently integrating complex mechanisms in a layered structure and compactly arranging the gear train. Furthermore, in automatic movements, thickness is reduced by incorporating peripheral rotors in some models. In addition, on the exterior side, thickness is suppressed even in sporty models by designing the bezel fixing structure and integrated bracelet with high rigidity and no unnecessary elements. Visual thinness is also emphasized by the layout and finish of the dial, achieving consistent elegance from dress watches to Overseas models. For Vacheron Constantin, "thinness" can be said to be one of the important savoir-faires in complications.
Easy yet durable strap replacement

The interchangeable strap mechanism, which allows for easy removal and replacement without the need for special tools, has become a popular feature in recent years. The Overseas, which features an integrated bracelet as its symbol, was quick to fully incorporate this feature into its current collection, primarily for its practicality during travel.

By switching from a bracelet to a leather or rubber strap, the watch offers not only convenience while traveling, but also the flexibility to use a single timepiece for business, leisure, and various occasions at your destination. What is required of a travel watch is not just special timekeeping functions such as GMT or world timer. Based on the Maison's aesthetic, this mechanism can be said to be suitable for the modern traveler, allowing them to enjoy diverse travel scenarios more comfortably.
A perspective from Yuto Hosoda, editor of Chronos Japan.
The interchangeable strap mechanism is now being adopted by an increasing number of brands. However, it requires two seemingly contradictory conditions: easy removal without tools, and a securely fixed strap when attached. In reality, not many brands have managed to achieve both ease of use and reliability. In this respect, the Overseas's mechanism, which uses a push button on the case back side of the bracelet, allows for intuitive operation and, as expected of a sporty watch, boasts high rigidity. It is a rare find. Furthermore, while adopting an interchangeable mechanism limits the choice of replacement straps to genuine Overseas straps, the variety of straps available for the Overseas is so extensive that this does not feel like a disadvantage.
The history of the Overseas, starting with the 222
In the 1970s, a new category called "luxury sports" emerged in the world of luxury watches. The 222, released in 1977, was a unique interpretation of this trend. Its name comes from the fact that it marked the 222nd anniversary of the brand's founding. It truly symbolizes the maison's unbroken pioneering spirit, a spirit that would eventually be carried on by the Overseas model.

Debuting in 1996, the Overseas transformed the notched bezel, a symbol of the 222, into an eight-leaf design reminiscent of the Maison's iconic Maltese cross. Furthermore, the integrated bracelet became a more powerful, linear, angular shape. And in 2004, it evolved into its second generation.
The face design has a stronger sporty feel, and the indices and hands have become more massive. The most distinctive feature, however, is the bracelet, which is inspired by the Maltese cross. Despite its bold design and robustness, the shortened lugs and end pieces improve the wearing comfort.

Building on this lineage, the third generation was born in 2016. The bezel changed from eight leaves to six, giving it a sleeker look. The middle case also had its bevel widened, emphasizing its elegant three-dimensionality while also increasing its integration with the bracelet.

The blue dial, evoking the vast sky and ocean, truly invites you on a journey, harmoniously complemented by the gorgeous 18K rose gold case. Thirty years after the collection's inception, its refined charm has been further polished. Automatic movement (Cal. 5100). 37 jewels. 28,800 vibrations/hour. Power reserve of approximately 60 hours. 18K rose gold case (41mm diameter, 10.69mm thickness). 15 ATM water resistance. 10,208,000 yen (tax included).
The refined design ensures that even with a variety of colored dials and complex mechanisms, the collection maintains its strong presence.
