Breitling is a maker of practical luxury watches. Their capabilities are evident in both the exterior and the movement.

Since its founding in 1884, Breitling has continued to create watches that can be described as "instruments for professionals." Today, it has established a unique position in the watch market as a manufacturer of high-performance luxury watches. In this article, in order to delve into the essence of Breitling, we will explain where Breitling has come to be by focusing on its core "attitude towards precision," "performance of its in-house developed and manufactured Cal.01 movement," and "evolution of modern exteriors."

The significance of all models being "COSC certified chronometers"

When discussing Breitling, it's impossible to ignore the brand's fundamental commitment to precision. In 1999, the company set a major goal: the "100% Chronometer Declaration." This was an ambitious undertaking to ensure that all of its watches—both mechanical and quartz—passed the precision certification of the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC: Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres).

COSC testing for mechanical movements is conducted under the following conditions: A Swiss-made, uncased movement is measured for accuracy over 15 days at three different temperatures and in five different positions. Only movements that meet the standard of -4 to +6 seconds per day are allowed to be called COSC chronometers.

Even among luxury watch manufacturers, this certification is often limited to only a select few models. However, Breitling has obtained this certification for virtually all of its products, from complex mechanical chronographs to simple three-hand models, and even quartz movements.

The fact that all Breitling products are COSC certified demonstrates that Breitling watches are not merely decorative items, but practical instruments designed to keep accurate time in a variety of environments. The overwhelming trust users have in the brand is firmly built upon Breitling's commitment to and continuous achievement of these objective standards.

What is the Cal.01 chronograph, which is an iconic piece for Breitling?

Breitling Navitimer

The fact that some models feature a see-through case back, allowing you to admire the chronograph movement, is a welcome feature for watch enthusiasts.

Building upon the high precision foundation of chronometer certification for all its models, Breitling has completed the in-house developed and manufactured chronograph movement "Cal.01," unveiled in 2009, to move to the next stage. This highly acclaimed Cal.01 is characterized by its design that enhances practicality for everyday use.

First and foremost, it's worth noting that it achieved a power reserve of approximately 70 hours from the time of its announcement. This was groundbreaking at a time when the power reserve of mechanical watches, mainly those using general-purpose movements, was around 40 hours. Even if you take off your watch on Friday night and wear a different watch over the weekend, the Cal.01 will still be ticking on Monday morning. This frees users from the hassle of hastily resetting the time and date at the start of the week.

What is even more innovative, and perhaps the greatest strength of the Cal.01, is that it has no "date adjustment prohibited time zone." In conventional mechanical watches, it is prohibited to use the crown to quickly advance the date between 8 PM and 4 AM. This is because during this time, the calendar disc and the gear that moves this disc (the date wheel) are engaged inside the watch, and forcibly adjusting the date could damage these parts.

However, Breitling addressed this weakness. The Cal.01 features a uniquely designed calendar mechanism that allows for safe date adjustment at any time. Users can intuitively change the calendar without worrying about the time. This mechanism not only dramatically improves convenience but also significantly reduces malfunctions due to accidental operation and prevents unexpected maintenance expenses.

Furthermore, the Cal.01 employs a column wheel for chronograph control and a vertical clutch system for power transmission. The push buttons offer a smooth feel while also ensuring reliable operation.

Thus, the Cal.01 combines a robust structure with a user-friendly mechanism. In fact, it has been continuously improved since its initial release, and the fact that many of its parts and structure have evolved makes it a chronograph movement that symbolizes the spirit of Breitling.

The modern sizing options and exterior finishes are also noteworthy.

Breitling Top Time

Breitling "Top Time B01 Racing Kamen Rider Limited" Ref. AB01774A1B1X1
Released in March 2026, this special model commemorates the 55th anniversary of the "Kamen Rider" broadcast. This model is also equipped with the Cal.01 movement. Automatic winding (Cal.01). 34 jewels. 28,800 vibrations/hour. Power reserve of approximately 70 hours. Stainless steel case (38mm diameter, 13.07mm thickness). 10 ATM water resistance. Limited to 155 pieces in Japan. 1,255,100 yen (tax included).

While the performance of the movement has improved, Breitling has also successfully made remarkable updates to the exterior and case size of its watches to meet modern needs.

Breitling in the past was characterized by its large, robust case designs, exemplified by the "Navitimer," a pilot's watch synonymous with the brand, and the heavily built "Chronomat." This size was essential for ensuring the legibility needed to instantly read the time in the unique environment of a cockpit during flight. However, it's also true that their overwhelming presence made them difficult to fit under a shirt cuff in business settings.

In recent years, Breitling has been actively expanding its lineup of models with smaller case diameters, including 41mm, 38mm, and even smaller, to meet evolving needs.

In addition to reducing the case size, in recent years they have also been developing collections with a more elegant design aimed at women.

For example, the Navitimer collection now includes a wide range of sizes, including a simple three-hand model without a chronograph function. This modern size range provides a comfortable fit even for users with slender wrists, evolving Breitling into a timepiece that is more suited to everyday life.

Even with a reduced case size, there is absolutely no compromise on the quality of the exterior. The case and bracelet, which skillfully utilize both satin and polished finishes, possess a lustrous and three-dimensional quality, exuding a presence befitting a luxury watch.

Furthermore, the Rouleaux bracelet, which has been revived on the Chronomat, achieves a superior fit on the wrist through the precise arrangement of tubular links. The edges are carefully beveled, achieving a high level of balance between robustness that can withstand harsh environments and refined aesthetics that harmonize with formal attire.

As a practical yet luxurious "instrument"

Breitling's philosophy of creating instruments for professionals is consistently evident in every aspect of its watches, from the internal structure unseen by the user to the after-sales service. Indeed, mechanical watches require regular overhauls to ensure long-term enjoyment. Breitling's in-house movements, including the Cal.01, are designed from the early stages of development with a focus on a rational structure that is easy for watchmakers to maintain. For example, the Cal.01's modular component configuration ensures efficiency in disassembly and assembly, which is a crucial element in maintaining consistent maintenance quality and enabling prompt future repairs.

Furthermore, models equipped with in-house movements come with a 5-year international warranty (activation required after purchase). This, too, is a testament to their absolute confidence in the durability and reliability of their products.

COSC chronometer certification is maintained across all models. The Cal.01 movement, which eliminates the time period during which calendar operation is prohibited, greatly contributes to user convenience. Furthermore, the range of modern sizes that meet the needs of various users and the high-quality exterior are all results of Breitling prioritizing user satisfaction above all else.

With its exceptional performance and sophisticated design, modern Breitling watches continue to gain fans by successfully combining professional instrument functionality with luxury. Without losing sight of its roots as an aviation instrument, it has evolved to suit modern lifestyles and established a new standard for luxury watches.
