In April 2017, Seiko Watch released the ultimate diver's watch, the "Tuna Can," as an April Fool's Day prank. Now, this Tuna Can has been made into a real product, and the watch magazine "Chronos Japan" has participated in its development. What kind of tuna is worthy of being the contents of the "Tuna Can," which has been widely popular and loved by a wide range of users? We will thoroughly discuss this while tasting four types of tuna cans (one of which is mackerel).
Which tuna is best suited to be the contents of Seiko's "Tuna Can"?
In 1975, Seiko released the "6159-022," a diver's watch with 600m water resistance capable of withstanding saturation diving. This watch is characterized by its titanium case and the presence of an outer case protector. Due to the shape of this protector, it has become affectionately known as the "tuna can" among watch enthusiasts.
In April 2017, Seiko Watch announced it would release a "Tuna Can" named after this nickname. Although it was later revealed to be an April Fool's joke, the product was actually released in April 2026.
In developing the product, Masayuki Hirota, editor-in-chief of the watch magazine "Chronos Japan," along with editors Yuto Hosoda and Chieko Tsuruoka, thoroughly discussed "which tuna is most suitable for a 'tuna can'?" They tasted four types of tuna (one of which was mackerel) to make their selection.
