Longines' first civilian diver's watch was the "Nautilus Skin Diver," which debuted in 1958. Following this, the company focused on developing diver's watches, and the following year, 1959, they released the "Ref. 7042," which would become the ancestor of later legendary diver's watches.
A key feature of the Ref. 7042 is the Super Compressor case developed by Erwin Piquet. This case utilizes water pressure to enhance airtightness, achieving a water resistance of 12 atmospheres in the Ref. 7042. The two crowns are also a distinctive feature; the one at the 2 o'clock position allows for the rotation of an inner bezel located around the outer edge of the dial, enabling the measurement of dive time. Combined with the clean bezel, slender lugs, and domed crystal, it possesses an elegance that, while being a serious diver's watch, also has a certain refinement reminiscent of a dress watch.
Longines continued to improve its watches while maintaining the basic design, and in 1965 released the "Ref. 7594" with 20 ATM water resistance. In the 1970s, they supplied watches with 30 ATM water resistance to the Australian Navy, further enhancing the performance of their watches as diver's watches.
The Longines Legend Diver, released in 2007, was one of these so-called reissue models. While inheriting features such as the original's 42mm diameter case, rotating inner bezel, and two crowns, this model also features a modern screw-down crown, thus reconstructing the "legend" while becoming a practical timepiece for everyday use.
Since then, the lineup has expanded to include models with date displays, smaller diameter models, bronze cases, and colored dials. In 2023, a non-date model with a 39mm diameter case was introduced, and by complying with the ISO 6425 standard, it evolved into a truly authentic diver's watch. The basic design hasn't changed much from previous Legend Diver models. Key features that characterize past models remain, such as the two screw-down crowns at 2 and 4 o'clock, the rotating inner bezel, the slender lugs, and the domed sapphire crystal. The dial, lacking a calendar display, also contributes to the simple look reminiscent of the 1959 original.
On the other hand, the specifications are befitting of a modern diver's watch. It boasts 30 ATM water resistance and complies with ISO 6425 standards. The Longines-exclusive automatic movement Cal. L888.6 features a silicon balance spring and a power reserve of approximately 72 hours, and is COSC-certified chronometer.
Rather than drastically changing its appearance, this watch delves deeper into the charm of the original while enhancing its perfection as a modern, practical timepiece. The direction of evolution that the Legend Diver has consistently pursued is certainly carried on in this new model.
What's noteworthy is the craftsmanship of the dial.
What's particularly noteworthy about this model is the dial. The all-black dial features a grained finish, which reduces light reflection. For a diver's watch, legibility is one of the most important specifications. Unlike previous Legend Diver models which used glossy lacquer dials, this model has a matte texture, giving it a more tool-watch-like appearance.

While recreating the design of the past, it ensures the visibility required of a modern diver's watch. It is a detail befitting a legendary diver's watch that balances heritage and practicality.

The appeal of the Legend Diver lies in the fact that, while it is a genuine diver's watch, it does not have the typical appearance of a sports watch. One of the elements that contributes to this is the rotating inner bezel housed inside the case. Because it does not have the large outer bezel found in typical diver's watches, the outer edge of the case is clean and uncluttered. Combined with slender lugs and a domed sapphire crystal, it creates a more classic impression than one might expect from a 42mm case diameter.

The distinctive design codes of the 1959 Ref. 7042—with its two crowns, rotating inner bezel, slender lugs, and Arabic numeral dial—remain timeless. This is likely why Longines has chosen to refine its details rather than drastically change the design.
The new Longines Legend Diver 59 is an extension of that legacy.
