G-STEEL "GST-W1000AD-2AJF"

The "G-STEEL" line, part of the G-SHOCK family, boasts a metallic feel—a challenge for resin models—while maintaining a size and price range suitable for business wear. Although its initial release date is unclear, the oldest model in the current lineup, the "GST-W110D," featured a large package and a "layer guard structure" combining a stainless steel bezel with resin cushioning. When it debuted in 2015, it generated considerable buzz for its groundbreaking combination of a heavy, metallic feel and a tough construction.

The "GST-B1000D," released in 2025, garnered renewed attention as a new generation model. This series newly adopted the "Carbon Core Guard structure," familiar from the 2100 series, which directly protects the module with a strong and lightweight carbon case. Furthermore, by introducing urethane resin cushioning parts, a precise glass bonding method, and miniaturizing the module itself, a dramatic slimming of the case was achieved while maintaining the conventional shock resistance and airtightness. In addition, it presented a unique "aesthetic of subtraction" by featuring an octagonal bezel without a logo and a full analog display.

The GST-B1000D series incorporates color schemes and dial patterns reminiscent of the "DW-5000C," often referred to as the origin of G-SHOCK, as a G-SHOCK homage. The photo shows the "GST-B1000D-1AJF."

The product we'll be introducing today is the "GST-W1000," which was released in 2026 as the latest model, building upon the groundbreaking achievements of the GST-B1000D.

The design theme for this new model is "all-around timepiece." While maintaining a simple design that fits comfortably on the wrist in any situation and building upon the toughness-focused design philosophy of the original G-SHOCK, it is an ambitious work that further brings out the hard appeal of metal and the beauty of its complex form. It comes in three colors: black, green, and blue. Although it has the same color lineup as the aforementioned GST-B1000D, the new model is differentiated by setting the colors to be slightly brighter.

In this review article, we will focus on the Ref. GST-W1000AD-2AJF, which features a vibrant blue dial.

Tough Solar. Approximately 18 months of operation on a full charge (in power-saving mode). Resin and stainless steel case (50mm x 45.5mm, 13.2mm thick). 20 ATM water resistance. 115,500 yen (tax included).

A new case design that pursues the ultimate metallic texture.

The highlight of the GST-W1000 is that it not only scales up the excellent design established by its predecessor, the GST-B1000D, but also introduces a new case design. While inheriting the carbon core guard structure as its base, the quality of the exterior is further enhanced by dividing the metal exterior into multiple parts, meticulously polishing them, and then assembling them.

A 3D exploded view of the case. By improving the precision of the metal interlocking, the impact is distributed to each component, achieving the same impact-resistant structure as before without the need for resin shock absorbers.

This exterior design is reminiscent of the "Multi-Guard Structure" used in the top-of-the-line MR-G series, which reproduces the complex shapes of G-SHOCK watches using the difficult-to-process titanium material while also achieving a superior finish. In fact, the exterior of this model features a sophisticated level of polishing that goes beyond the mid-range, including a combination of polished and circumferential brushed finishes on the bezel, and meticulous hairline finishes that correspond to the case's slope.

The lug parts that contact the end pieces of the bracelet and the interlocking parts of the side case are chamfered and then honed. Of course, this design does not compromise the 20 ATM water resistance or shock resistance.

Furthermore, the design, which involves assembling separate metal parts rather than the conventional method of covering the carbon fiber center case with an outer case, greatly contributes to its simple appearance. This allows for a design where screws are not exposed on the surface, resulting in an appearance that is not overly rugged or tool-like. Naturally, this multi-part mechanism requires more effort in finishing and sizing compared to forging or casting, which can create the case exterior in one piece. However, this results in a finish that strongly conveys G-STEEL's new identity of pursuing the ultimate in metallic texture.

"GST-W1000AD-2AJF"

The blue-dial "GST-W1000AD-2AJF" that we'll be reviewing today is the only one of the three color options with a black bezel, giving it a particularly sporty look.

Regarding the bracelet, there are no major changes from the previous model. The case lugs and the bracelet end pieces are smoothly connected, enhancing the solid impression. In addition, the finish of the lugs and each link is unified with vertical hairline, giving the watch a sense of luxury and smooth unity.

A sophisticated face design that embodies all-purpose functionality.

The minimalist aesthetic established in the GST-B1000D is also evident in the full-analog face design of this model. While equipped with a variety of functions such as a calendar and AM/PM display, the amount of information on the dial is kept to a minimum, and the sub-dials are unified in the same color as the main dial, resulting in a delicate balance of visual noise.

The third sub-dial positioned horizontally is bordered with a three-dimensional component. Each sub-dial has a different scale design, allowing for quick reading of the measured time when the chronograph is activated.

What particularly catches the eye is the design of the dial. The three-dimensional texture, created by a series of finely shaped stripes, utilizes the nano-processing technology of Casio's mother factory, "Yamagata Casio." The radially running pattern scatters light as the arm moves, changing its appearance even with the smallest everyday actions. What is especially noteworthy is that this intricate design is achieved while also allowing light to pass through to the solar cell directly below. Casio's technological prowess, which has accumulated know-how by making not only shock resistance but also solar function a key feature of its watches, is truly astonishing.

The dial is divided into 12 equal parts by dividing lines that extend from the center towards the hour markers, creating a vivid change in color depending on how the light hits it.

It's also worth mentioning that the city codes used for the world time function are deliberately placed on the side of the bezel. In typical multi-function watches, the city codes are usually displayed on the LCD or the top of the bezel. However, with this model, you have to look at it from the side to adjust the function settings, and the function labels for buttons like "MODE" and "LIGHT" are also omitted, making it slightly inconvenient. But this design prioritizes an all-purpose look even at the expense of some convenience, demonstrating Casio's strong commitment to the concept.

The intricate city code engravings on the side also serve as an accent to the side view, where multiple metal parts and the carbon case interlock.

Is the wearing comfort even better than a full-metal G-SHOCK?

The case dimensions are designed to be 50mm in height, 45.5mm in width, and 13.2mm in thickness. While the numbers alone suggest a substantial volume, the packaging, with lug-to-lug spacing kept to 50mm, makes it relatively compact for a G-SHOCK. Furthermore, the horizontal dimension includes the protruding case sides, so the overall circular silhouette appears slightly smaller, resulting in a visually pleasing fit when worn.

This is a wrist shot taken with a wrist circumference of 16.5cm. Incidentally, the weight is 138g, and because some of the structure is made of resin, it gives the strong impression of being surprisingly light considering its heavy appearance.

Furthermore, the integrated design of the lugs and bracelet end pieces offers significant advantages. Because the end pieces are designed to fall at a near-right angle to the wrist, even users with slender wrists are less likely to experience an awkward gap. Combined with the flat, tightly fitting bracelet, even I, who usually find G-SHOCK watches to be on the larger side, found the fit to be excellent.

Because it fits snugly on the wrist, the watch itself doesn't swing around much, making it very stable to wear. The bracelet links are adjusted by punching them out, and I found it to be a perfect fit after removing 5 links.

The operation of each function is also good. The four pushers on the side of the case have just the right amount of resistance, and although it doesn't have the crisp click of a mechanical watch, it provides a solid feel. The functions of each button are as follows: the top left is for calling up the UTC function, the top right is for turning on the LED light, the bottom left is for switching modes, and the bottom right is for checking reception results and connecting to a smartphone. The screw-down crown can be pulled out to set the home city and world time city.

A professional-grade, tough mechanism hidden behind its refined appearance.

This model features the "Tough Movement 2," a new generation module first unveiled in the Gravitymaster "GWR-B3000" and other models. It not only boasts a robust exterior but also excels in its performance as a tool watch, consistently displaying accurate time.

The most symbolic features of this are the "automatic needle position correction function with shock detection" and the "magnetic field detection function." These are professional-grade toughness mechanisms that automatically detect deviations in the reference position of the needle caused by external pressure and correct them to the precise position. For example, if a strong impact is received, the needle position is immediately and automatically corrected to the correct position. Also, if a strong magnetic field is detected, the movement of the needle is temporarily stopped to prevent deviation, and once the magnetic field disappears, it returns to the correct position and the hands start moving again.

Furthermore, in addition to the radio-controlled solar power (Multi-Band 6 and Tough Solar) that is synonymous with G-SHOCK, it is also equipped with Bluetooth mobile link functionality. By linking with the dedicated app "CASIO WATCHES", it is possible to control a variety of functions such as automatic time correction four times a day, world time settings that can be selected from approximately 300 cities, and a "phone finder function" that makes your smartphone ring with the press of a button on the watch, making it a truly practical timepiece.

As a supplement, let's also touch upon the function of the sub-dials. In the normal time mode for everyday use, the sub-dial at the 9 o'clock position functions as a dual time display, with the small hand below it indicating AM/PM. The 3 o'clock position functions as a 24-hour display of the current time, and the 6 o'clock position indicates the day of the week for your home city and the battery level. On the other hand, when the chronograph is activated, the central seconds hand measures the seconds, and the two small hands on the 9 o'clock sub-dial display show the hours and minutes being measured. The 3 o'clock position continues to function as a 24-hour display of the current time.

Experience the true essence of metal: the further evolution of the new generation G-STEEL.

In my personal opinion, G-STEEL has long been a relatively low-key presence within G-SHOCK's extensive lineup. Especially since the full-metal G-SHOCK debuted in 2018 and became a huge hit, the focus of attention on "metal" G-SHOCKs has tended to be on that. Although G-STEEL has been releasing new models, shifting towards thinner and smaller designs, it seems that it has been in a period of searching for its own identity in terms of clearly differentiating itself from the full-metal series.

However, with the introduction of its predecessor, the "GST-B1000D," G-STEEL established its identity as a minimalist, modern, and stylish metal G-SHOCK. And with the arrival of the latest chronograph model, the "GST-W1000," which we reviewed here, that identity has become even stronger, and I think it has established a unique position distinct from full-metal G-SHOCKs.

Furthermore, the fact that this model combines a split metal exterior reminiscent of the top-of-the-line MR-G, a dial showcasing Yamagata Casio's nano-processing technology, and the latest Tough Movement 2, all while being priced at a mid-range 115,500 yen (including tax), makes it an overwhelmingly cost-effective choice.

For readers who already own a favorite full-metal G-SHOCK, MT-G, or MR-G, we especially encourage you to experience the incredible level of craftsmanship of this watch for yourself—a true "overthrow of the established order."
