TOKYO BASE President Masato Tani
Even amidst the ongoing apparel recession, TOKYO BASE, which operates select clothing stores, has achieved remarkable growth. At the helm is CEO Masato Tani, 35 years old. Aiming to promote Japanese creations, the company operates the select shop STUDIOUS, the contemporary brand UNITED TOKYO, and the high-end casual brand PUBLIC TOKYO. Both brands are enjoying strong support from young people and are growing steadily. Tani is also enthusiastic about actively expanding overseas, promoting Japanese brands and Japanese craftsmanship to the world. The watch choices of this man, who is considered a rising star in the apparel industry, are in line with his brand strategy.
Hirota: I'm looking forward to hearing from someone in the apparel industry this time. I'm looking forward to hearing about the appeal of watches in general, which is different from the perspective of watch enthusiasts.
Tani: That puts me in a bit of a bind (laughs). To be honest, my tastes are quite biased, and the only current model I own is a Hublot, which I bought for my 30th birthday. I'm a huge soccer fan, and Hublot sponsors soccer, so I was also attracted to them because, despite being a relatively new brand, they've become a representative of luxury watches in just the last decade or so.
Hirota: Hublot has a sense of the times.
Tani: But my favorite is the Rolex Daytona 6241 Paul Newman. I bought it to commemorate our IPO in 2015. When I was younger, I admired the people in fashion magazines wearing them, and I always wanted to own one someday.
