TOKYO BASE President Masato Tani
Even amidst the ongoing apparel recession, TOKYO BASE, which operates select clothing stores, has achieved remarkable growth. At the helm is CEO Masato Tani, 35 years old. Aiming to promote Japanese creations, the company operates the select shop STUDIOUS, the contemporary brand UNITED TOKYO, and the high-end casual brand PUBLIC TOKYO. Both brands are enjoying strong support from young people and are growing steadily. Tani is also enthusiastic about actively expanding overseas, promoting Japanese brands and Japanese craftsmanship to the world. The watch choices of this man, who is considered a rising star in the apparel industry, are in line with his brand strategy.
Hirota: What is it about Rolex, especially vintage ones, that appeals to you?
Tani: This is not limited to watches, but it's important that things will still be up to date in 10 years' time. When it comes to sneakers, Adidas Stan Smiths and Converse All Stars will probably still be new in 10 or 20 years' time. Vintage Rolex watches will also always be worn by people with cutting-edge fashion sense.
Hirota: But in the fashion world, you can't make money unless you create trends. How do you strike that balance?
Tani: That's a very difficult question. On the other hand, I'm also quite a trend-follower, so I feel like I'm always juggling two axes. But I don't do it half-heartedly. If it's a trend, I go all out for the season. If it's a classic, I narrow it down thoroughly.
Hirota: I've always wanted to ask, what's the point of wearing a watch these days?
