　The Heuer Monaco, released in 1969, marked the beginning of the automatic chronograph era. However, the rising value of the Swiss franc and the discontinuation of the supply of the base movement forced the unfortunate retirement of this ambitious model. Over the next 20 years, the newly revived Monaco has grown into a TAG Heuer staple.

　The perpetual calendar is a complex mechanism that ranks alongside the minute repeater and tourbillon. While there are numerous publications on its mechanism and history, there are few that explain the mechanism of the annual calendar, which was introduced in 1996 and has a short history. In this feature, we will explain the design of representative annual calendars to provide a simple explanation of what kind of mechanism the annual calendar is and what its strengths are.
