The birth of Santos began with an adventure.
Alberto Santos-Dumont, the youngest son of a wealthy Brazilian coffee plantation owner, became passionate about developing airships and aircraft after moving with his family to France. In 1906, at the age of 33, he successfully conducted a flight experiment in a self-built, powered aircraft. The record was set at an altitude of 3 meters and a distance of 60 meters. This was the first airplane flight in Europe. To check the time while piloting the plane, he consulted his friend Louis Cartier, and the resulting watch, the Santos, is still Cartier's signature watch.
The perfect balance between a dress watch and a sports watch: the Santos-Dumont
The most representative collection of Cartier's men's watches is the Santos, which was born in 1904. Just as the Tank Louis Cartier is at the pinnacle of Cartier's most famous Tank, the origins of the Santos lie in the Santos-Dumont. The updated Santos-Dumont, released as a new model in 2019, was surprisingly released as a quartz model.
Details that catch your eye: a 6-year quartz movement, an ultra-thin case, and a thin strap.
The Santos-Dumont is obviously thin. Watch connoisseurs might say that's to be expected with a quartz movement. However, it's equipped with a new movement that lasts for six years. What kind of movement is it that runs twice as long as previous models? Not only is it thin, but the bezel with its distinctive screws gives it a sporty, three-dimensional look.
