The History of Jaeger-LeCoultre

We will introduce the history of Jaeger-LeCoultre, a company that has been involved in numerous inventions and produced many movements since its founding, and learn about its achievements that have contributed to the evolution of watchmaking.

What is Jaeger-LeCoultre?

Antoine LeCoultre

Antoine LeCoultre (1803-1881) founded Jaeger-LeCoultre in 1833.

Jaeger-LeCoultre's roots lie in a small workshop opened by Swiss watchmaker Antoine LeCoultre in the Jura Mountains in 1833.

Later, Jacques-David LeCoultre, the grandson of Antoine LeCoultre, asked Edmond Jaeger, who was renowned for his movement development, to develop an ultra-thin movement, and the two men joined forces to create the brand in 1937.

Even after officially becoming Jaeger-LeCoultre, the company continued to supply movements to renowned Swiss manufacturers, including Cartier, which had been supplying movements to the brand since before its launch, as well as the world's three major watch brands (Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, and Audemars Piguet).

Inventing a historic instrument

In 1844, founder Antoine LeCoultre invented the first ever millionometer, an instrument capable of measuring to within 0.001mm.

This invention, which made it possible to produce more precise parts in watchmaking, is said to be a groundbreaking event in the history of watches.

He also invented the first ever crown-winding watch in 1847. At a time when a key was still used for winding, this mechanism, using a crown and a small pusher, redefined how pocket watches were used.

The instruments and pocket watches that resulted from these inventions won gold medals at the first Great Exhibition held in London in 1851.

Antique watch repair workshop

The Manufacture, located in the Vallée de Joux, employs around 10 watchmakers in its antique watch repair workshop, which also hosts regular restoration workshops for guests.

Let's take a look at the appeal of Jaeger-LeCoultre, a brand beloved by many watch enthusiasts, and understand what makes it unique from other luxury watchmakers.

The watch industry's leading "machinery man"

Jaeger-LeCoultre, which produces most of its movements and parts in-house, has been a machine shop since its founding, honing its skills to produce high-quality timepieces.

The company invented the millionometer in 1844, a device that is said to have changed the history of watchmaking, and thanks to the advanced production system it established, it had produced approximately 350 types of movements by 1900.

From 1902, they produced most of the movements for Patek Philippe for around 30 years, and also supplied movements to Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin, and others.

Edmond Jaeger, one of the brand's key figures, was responsible for the movement of Cartier's masterpiece, the Santos.

1000 hours of testing

Another major feature of Jaeger-LeCoultre is the 1000-hour inspection that each watch produced undergoes.

While the most common test, the Swiss Chronometer Test, takes 15 days, Jaeger-LeCoultre tests are carried out over a period of approximately six weeks.

Furthermore, while the Swiss chronometer certification tests the movement alone, Jaeger-LeCoultre's 1000-hour test scrutinizes the "quality of the finished product," including water resistance and magnetic resistance.

Jaeger-LeCoultre's 1000-hour test is the best in the industry for testing popular luxury watches.

Jaeger-LeCoultre has two major models: the Reverso and the Master. We will introduce the features of each and recommend some models.
