During that time, it has evolved in a variety of ways to suit its intended use, from drive mechanisms such as power transmission and operation control to measurement mechanisms such as flyback, split-seconds, and coaxial totalizers. While practicality is of course what the chronograph was originally intended to pursue, there are now high-end models that also combine aesthetic appeal as objects of appreciation. How has the modern chronograph evolved?
While tracing its history and evolution, we will summarize the individuality and characteristics of representative models along with their main mechanisms.
