The Luminor Ref. PAM5218-201/A that Stallone is putting up for auction holds a special place in Panerai's history. Founded in 1860, Panerai initially specialized in producing diver's watches and precision instruments for the Italian Navy, without producing commercially available wristwatches. However, in 1993, the company produced a reproduction of its early models and began marketing them to the civilian market. This is the Ref. PAM5218-201/A, bearing the "Pre-Vendôme" logo, of which only 677 pieces are said to have been produced (Pre-Vendôme refers to watches produced between 1993 and 1997, before Panerai became part of the Vendôme Group, now the Richemont Group). Shortly after its arrival on the market in the 1990s, not many people around the world were familiar with Panerai. Unbeknownst to most, one of these rare models ended up in Stallone's possession.

The logo (commonly known as the "OP" logo, OP stands for Officine Panerai) that Panerai used until 1997 when it became a subsidiary of the Vendôme Group (now the Richemont Group) is placed at the 6 o'clock position on the dial and on the case back.

Stallone first encountered Panerai while in Italy, and was so impressed by its sturdy construction and large case size that he ordered an original model. He then wore the completed Ref. PAM5218-201/A in the film "Daylight." Stallone's connection with Panerai deepened, and the "Sly Tech" model was eventually born. The name "Sly Tech" comes from Stallone's nickname, "Sly." Panerai's popularity skyrocketed as a watch brand beloved by a world-famous Hollywood star.

Stallone said of the Ref. PAM5218-201/A, "In the movie Daylight, I wanted to wear a watch that no one had ever seen before. I didn't take it off until filming was over. This watch is the star."

Stallone wore the Ref. PAM5218-201/A throughout the filming of "Daylight," and commented that "this watch got me through every challenge in the movie."

The watch was consigned directly by Stallone himself, and Phillips describes it as "in excellent condition, with its original sharkskin strap and original Pre-Vendôme buckle." It comes with the original box, two straps with Pre-Vendôme logo buckles, an original brass screwdriver, a personal autograph by Stallone, and an original lobby card from the "Daylight" studio. The estimated price is between $40,000 and $80,000, but we'll see what happens.

Stallone will be offering a total of five watches from his personal collection at the "Racing Pulse" auction. In addition to the Luminor "Daylight" model, he will also be offering four Richard Mille watches. These include the RM 032 worn in "The Expendables 3" and the RM 25-01 Adventure Tourbillon Chronograph, a collaboration between Stallone and Richard Mille. The "Racing Pulse" auction will take place in New York on December 12, 2020.
