Born October 21, 1956, in California, USA, Carrie Fisher was a second-generation celebrity born to two superstar parents: actress Debbie Reynolds, known for her role in the musical film "Singin' in the Rain," and singer Eddie Fisher. She began her acting career in 1973, when she was a high school student, appearing in a Broadway musical alongside her mother. She made her film debut in 1975, and her second film was "Star Wars: A New Hope" in 1977. This led to her breakthrough role as "Space Princess" Leia Organa, and she became an instant star alongside her co-stars Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill. She continued her acting career until her sudden death in 2017, and her final film was "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" in the same year. She made an archival appearance in "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" in 2019, using previously unused footage.

The photo in this issue was taken in 1980, when her career as an actress was just beginning to take off. Looking at the watch she was wearing on her right wrist at the time, it was a Porsche Design by Orfina watch, designed by Porsche Design and manufactured by Orfina.

Porsche Design by Orfina

"Porsche Design by Orfina"

Porsche Design is a design studio founded by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, who designed the first-generation Porsche 911. Since its founding in 1972, it has worked on a wide range of products, including watches, apparel, writing instruments, and furniture. Currently a subsidiary of Porsche, the studio manufactures its watches at its own facility in Switzerland, but from its founding until 2013, it partnered with three watch brands in succession. Its first partner was Orfina. Founded in Grenchen, Switzerland in 1922, Orfina is a watch brand specializing in chronograph watches for military and pilots. Regarding Porsche Design's partner companies, Orfina was with the studio from 1972 to 1978, followed by IWC from 1978 to 1998, and then Eterna from 1998 to 2013.

The Porsche Design by Orfina collection was one of the earliest examples of the all-black design that is now commonplace. Ferdinand Alexander Porsche used his knowledge of automotive painting to create black PVD-coated watches. Porsche Design is known for its innovative use of materials and treatments, and this collection is where it all began.

The core of the collection was the chronograph model. Early on, the movement was the Valjoux 7750, but around 1975 this was changed to the Lemania 5100. A 29mm ladies' model was developed as a companion watch to this chronograph. Equipped with an ETA movement with three hands and a month/date display, this model was available in both automatic and quartz versions with nearly identical appearances. The only difference was the two lines at 6 o'clock that read "PORSCHE DESIGN / AUTOMATIC" or "PORSCHE DESIGN / QUARTZ," and the model worn by Carrie Fisher is thought to have been the former automatic.

A photo that gives you a glimpse of Carrie Fisher's true face

This photo was taken in 1980, when Carrie Fisher was said to be dating actor Dan Aykroyd, who co-starred with her in the film "The Blues Brothers." Dan was known to be a car enthusiast. I wonder if Carrie Fisher chose this watch under Dan's influence. I felt that this photo showed a side of her that enjoyed romance, a little different from the strong-willed and resolute character of Princess Leia.
