A: The sweep hand moves smoothly, while the step hand moves once per second.

The terms "sweep hand movement" and "step hand movement" are often seen in watch media. Generally, mechanical watches are said to be the former, and quartz watches are the latter.

The difference is the movement of the second hand. While the sweep hand moves smoothly, the step hand moves every 1 second or 0.5 seconds.

While step hand movement is often thought of as a feature of quartz watches, strictly speaking, mechanical watches that are considered to have sweep hand movement also move their hands in small steps, equal to the number of vibrations per second.

The reason why quartz watches often have step hand movements is to improve battery life. This idea was originally adopted by Seiko, but has now become the global standard. For this reason, many quartz watches with step hand movements will widen the interval between the step hand movements when the battery is about to run out, in order to extend the battery life.
