The terms "sweep hand movement" and "step hand movement" are often seen in watch media. Generally, mechanical watches are said to be the former, and quartz watches are the latter.
The difference is the movement of the second hand. While the sweep hand moves smoothly, the step hand moves every 1 second or 0.5 seconds.
The reason why quartz watches often have step hand movements is to improve battery life. This idea was originally adopted by Seiko, but has now become the global standard. For this reason, many quartz watches with step hand movements will widen the interval between the step hand movements when the battery is about to run out, in order to extend the battery life.

The mechanical sweep hand also moves in small steps.
Currently, the most obvious way to distinguish between mechanical and quartz watches is by the sweep movement of the hands. However, even mechanical watches with sweep movement actually have very fine step movement. Currently, only a very small number of mechanical watch movements, such as Seiko's Spring Drive, have a strict sweep movement of the hands.
There are also mechanical watches that intentionally use step hand movements to demonstrate the accuracy of the second display. However, there is a problem in that moving the second hand in one-second increments on a mechanical watch makes the mechanism complicated and expensive.
