Arnold & Son has announced the Luna Magma, a watch that displays the moon phases with a three-dimensional moon at the 6 o'clock position. The phases of the moon occur as the moon orbits the Earth, changing the relative positions of the Sun, Earth, and Moon. This is because the angle of the bright part of the Moon that is visible from Earth changes as it receives sunlight. To express this, many moon phase displays have simulated the appearance of the moon by cutting out part of the dial to obscure it. In contrast, the Luna Magma features a spherical moon model with dark and light areas at the 6 o'clock position, and the phases of the moon are expressed by how it is viewed from the dial side.

The 12mm diameter moon model features white marble for the light areas and aventurine glass for the dark areas. This moon model rotates in the same cycle as the waxing and waning of the moon, enabling the moon phase display. The dial displays the hours and minutes offset at 12 o'clock, with the rest of the space filled with aventurine glass representing the night sky. The A&S1021 movement also features a secondary display on the case back that displays the exact age of the moon, making it easy to adjust the high-precision moon phase, which is difficult to accurately adjust, with a deviation of only about one day every 122 years. This model is limited to 28 pieces worldwide.

Perpetual Moon Obsidian

Arnold & Son "Perpetual Moon Obsidian"
Manual-winding (Cal. A&S1512). 27 jewels. 21,600 vph. Power reserve approximately 90 hours. 18KRG (diameter 42mm, thickness 11.43mm). Water resistant to 3 ATM. Limited to 28 pieces worldwide. Price: 4,224,000 yen (tax included).

The new Perpetual Moon Obsidian features a dial crafted from Mexican golden obsidian. Obsidian is a type of volcanic rock that has long been used by Native Americans, including in religious ceremonies. The golden obsidian used for this model's dial is bronze-toned and characterized by its fine, sparkling crystals. The 42mm case is crafted from 18KRG to complement the dial's color. The Arnold & Son Perpetual Moon features a moon phase display that occupies almost half of the 12 o'clock side of the dial. The moon face disc features a large, rhodium-plated moon, even detailing its undulations. The hand-wound Caliber A&S1512 movement features a moon phase hand on the case back, allowing for easy, highly accurate adjustment of the moon phase, a process that is often difficult to achieve.
