Panerai has established itself as an innovator in the luxury watch industry, applying high-tech materials and non-watchmaking industrial processes to develop timepieces that are avant-garde yet distinctively Panerai. The Panerai Luminor Marina DMLS 44MM is undeniably a watch with austere aesthetics. Its monochrome appearance, nicknamed "Tutto Grigio" (Italian for "all gray") by Panerai, incorporates numerous cutting-edge technologies. The case material, in particular, is particularly noteworthy.

Innovative case material created by "LABORATORIO DI IDEE (Workshop of Ideas)"

Panerai embodies its commitment to continuous research into technological innovations that raise the standard and performance of its timepieces with the phrase "LABORATORIO DI IDEE" (Workshop of Ideas). The research and development department at its Florence headquarters employs approximately 50 highly specialized engineers who work closely with the design department to pursue groundbreaking products.

The first in the watch industry to adopt "DMLS" technology, achieving astonishing lightness

The Luminor Marina DMLS-44MM incorporates numerous advanced technologies. First and foremost, it utilizes DMLS, an acronym for "Direct Metal Laser Sintering," a 3D printing technology. This technology enables the production of designs previously impossible using metal processing techniques such as casting or forging, such as hollow, unique shapes. Because it can precisely mold almost any metal alloy, it has attracted attention in industries that use a lot of metal, such as the aerospace and automotive industries. Panerai used DMLS for the first time in this model. The 44mm titanium case was created by sintering titanium powder with a high-powered optical laser, creating an internal cavity and forming it 30 microns (0.03 mm) at a time. As a result, the caseband weighs an incredibly light 18 grams. The hollow construction achieved with DMLS reduces the metal weight by 30% compared to a standard caseband.

The case, manufactured using 3D printing technology known as DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering), is surprisingly lightweight thanks to its hollow structure, and the surface has a beautiful matte finish.

Monochrome nuances deepened by the composite material "Carbotech™" developed in-house in 2016

Next, the bezel, crown, and crown protector lever are made of the advanced composite material Carbotech™. Carbotech™ is a 1mm-thick material made of seven thin layers of carbon fiber, layered with alternating fiber orientations, pressed under high pressure and temperature, and then solidified with a special synthetic resin (high molecular weight polymer, PEEK). To ensure uniformity in appearance, Panerai presses long carbon fiber sheets. This creates a unique camouflage pattern on the surface, and the pattern varies depending on the cutting method, resulting in a unique finish for each watch. Panerai was the first watch brand to adopt this material in 2015. In addition to the aforementioned properties, Carbotech™ is lighter and more shock-resistant than titanium or ceramic. It is also corrosion-resistant and hypoallergenic.

High practicality is also attractive

The case is a traditional Panerai cushion shape, with sharp facets along its curves. At 3 o'clock, there is a feature that distinguishes the Panerai Luminor from the Radiomir: a crown protector. The crown is a two-stage type with a safety lock, and when pressed into the case, it ensures water resistance and prevents the hands and date display from being accidentally activated.

The dial has a sandwich structure, and the Arabic numerals, bar indexes, and hour, minute, and second hands are coated with Super-LumiNova to ensure visibility even in dark places.

This watch is powered by the in-house automatic caliber P.9010, which was announced in 2016 as the successor to the caliber P.9000, boasting a power reserve of approximately three days. It measures just 6.0mm thick, 1.9mm thinner than the P.9000. Its unique feature is the ability to independently operate the hour hand, which can jump forward or backward by one hour, making it convenient when changing time zones or switching between summer and winter time.

Finally, let's talk about the strap. Panerai is renowned for providing extremely durable and comfortable straps. The thick strap used on the Luminor Marina DMLS-44MM is Panerai's in-house developed Sportec™ strap. This strap has two layers: a textile outer surface and a rubber inner surface, making it resilient, water-resistant, and extremely durable.

In 2021, Panerai continued to introduce new materials, including the Submersible eLAB-ID™ concept watch, which is made from 98.6% recycled materials by weight, and the Luminor Marina eSteel™, made from eSteel™, a material composed entirely of recycled materials. The brand will continue to captivate enthusiasts with its astonishing technological capabilities.
