A: We have developed and improved many mechanisms.

If you're a watch enthusiast, you've surely heard the name Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747-1823). Active from the late 18th century to the early 19th century, he is said to have been a watchmaker who "advanced the history of watches by two centuries." Despite this, what made him so great is surprisingly little known. His major achievements include:

・Improvement of the automatic winding mechanism (1780)
・Improvement of the minute repeater (1783)
・Invention of the so-called "Breguet hand" (1783)
・Development of the "parachute," a shock-resistant device attached to a tenshin (1790)
- Invention of the so-called "Breguet balance" (1795)
・Invention of the tourbillon (1795, patented in 1801)
・Invention of the blind clock (1799)
・Invention of a highly efficient escapement (1802)

While he was influenced by marine chronometer makers such as Antoine Lépine, who created thin movements, and Pierre Le Roy, he went beyond that and invented a variety of other mechanisms. So why was he the only one who was able to work on new inventions every year? One reason is said to be his ability to socialize. By exchanging information with various watchmakers, Breguet cultivated ideas for new inventions. He also reached out to Antide Janvier, a talented watchmaker who was struggling to make a living. These qualities of his character led to his many inventions.

Documents on the "Tourbillon Regulator," patented on June 26, 1801. It describes the device as correcting deviations by rotating the carriage.

He established a studio rather than working alone and focused on design.

Another workshop began to produce watches as a workshop rather than as an individual. He focused on design and invention, while the watches were produced by other watchmakers. This division of labor gave Breguet the time to develop new ideas.

However, it wasn't until the 20th century that Breguet's achievements began to be re-evaluated. Watch collector Cecil Clutton and independent watchmaker George Daniels began to closely evaluate his work. From then on, various watchmakers began to incorporate Breguet's ideas into their own watches. One of these was independent watchmaker François-Paul Journe. Breguet, which accelerated the history of watches by two centuries, continues to be a source of inspiration for many watchmakers today.
