Founded in 2016, Reservoir, a Swiss watch brand with a French design, displays time with distinctive complications inspired by dashboards and gauges. The brand has just announced its new collection, "Canister," which is reminiscent of the speedometer of the legendary 356 Speedster car from the 1950s.

New model inspired by the 356 Speedster's speedometer
Before we get into the details of this latest Reservoir release, it's worth noting that the name Canister comes from the German word for a 20-liter stainless steel gasoline container (later replaced by plastic), and the Reservoir logo is inspired by the design on the side of a jerry can.
The container was invented in Germany in 1936, before the war. It was first adopted by the German Wehrmacht during World War II, and was subsequently adopted by militaries around the world.

The new Canister pays homage to the famous German car, the 356 Speedster, which was designed by Ferdinand Porsche based on the Beetle and produced from 1948 to 1965.
This Speedster was produced at the request of American importer Max Hoffman in late 1954, in response to a request for a cheaper and more stylish 356 for the American market. Incidentally, this is also known as the first car purchased by James Dean with his fee from his first film appearance.

As is typical of the Reservoir collection, the Canister is inspired by the mechanical world: counters, gauges, pressure gauges, etc. In this case, it borrows the functional style of the 356 Speedster's speedometer, proposing a new way of reading time.
This model features a polished 41.5mm grade 5 titanium case, is water resistant to 50m, and has a screw-down crown. The black dial features a pastel green zone from 25 to 45 and a red zone up to 50. The white hands tie the look together. The jumping hour display is located at 6 o'clock, just above the power reserve, and is protected by a sapphire crystal.

Reservoir watches typically feature three complications: a retrograde minute display that rotates 240 degrees, evoking the functionality of a tachometer, pressure gauge, and depth gauge; a jumping hour display reminiscent of an odometer; and a power reserve indicator modeled after a fuel gauge.
As for the movement, the Reserve is powered by an ETA ébauche movement, a standard movement. This model is also based on the automatic caliber ETA 2821-2 and is equipped with a patented module consisting of 124 parts, which can be seen through the sapphire crystal case back.
The watch is fitted with a black stitched leather strap with a buckle, which allows for tool-free strap changes, and three spare leather straps are included.
