[Combined] From Aomori to New York! Editor-in-Chief Hirota's Choice of Travel Watches (Part 2)

2021.12.25

The COVID-19 pandemic, which has lasted for around two years, has finally subsided, at least in Japan. While there is a high possibility that it will return, there is a sense of relief. Once released from confinement, one suddenly feels the desire to go out. If we force it, what is necessary for travel is, of course, a watch. There are only a few elements required for such a travel watch. It must give the owner a sense of something out of the ordinary. At the same time, it must be practical enough to be used while traveling. In reality, there are not many watches that can achieve both of these. However, considering that you cannot take five or ten watches with you on a trip, a travel watch must have even better performance than a watch you wear every day.

However, the nature of a travel watch is largely determined by its purpose. For a business trip, accuracy may be important, while a sea vacation requires high water resistance. If you're taking it to a party, it should have two hands, and a GMT timepiece will give it the feel of a real overseas trip. If your destination is the forest or the desert, you may need different elements. What's important is purpose, not function, and the only thing that matters is the quality of time you want to spend at your destination. So, this time again, we've selected five travel watches to suit your destination.

6. Grand Seiko Heritage Collection SLGH005 x Sumiya Ryokan (Kyoto)

This new Grand Seiko model boasts high specs, including a 36,000 vibration frequency, a power reserve of approximately 80 hours, a free-sprung movement, and a new escapement. However, what really caught my eye was the careful attention to usability. The buckle plate is slightly curved, and the center of gravity has been lowered to improve comfort, giving the entire watch a sense of hospitality.

In terms of hospitality, the closest place to me is Sumiya Ryokan in Kyoto. Not just here, but any long-established inn in Kyoto will prepare a bath for you in advance if you let them know your arrival time. You can take a bath as soon as you arrive, take a nap, and then your meal will be served. Seamless comfort without any thought is a luxury that is uniquely Japanese, yet applicable worldwide.

SLGH005

Grand Seiko Heritage Collection SLGH005
A masterpiece that combines a newly designed, highly accurate automatic movement with an extremely high-quality exterior. Unusually for a Grand Seiko mechanical watch, the case is less than 12mm thick, making it comfortable to wear. The short buckle also makes it suitable for those with slim wrists. Automatic (Cal. 9SA5). 47 jewels. 36,000 vibrations per hour. Power reserve of approximately 80 hours. Stainless steel case (diameter 40mm, thickness 11.7mm). Water resistant to 10 bar. 1,045,000 yen. (Inquiries) Grand Seiko dedicated dial Tel. 0120-302-617

Charm House

Charm House
This is a well-known, long-established inn in Kyoto. Each room is equipped with a bathtub made from Japanese cypress. The water stays warm for a long time, so even though it is not a hot spring, you won't feel cold after taking a bath. Unusually for a Kyoto inn, it also has multiple family baths. This inn has been thought out down to the smallest detail. Perhaps you can get into the spirit of it by drinking whiskey at Samboa in Gion after your meal? 431-31 Shirakabe-cho, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. Prices vary depending on the season and room. (Inquiries) Sumiya Ryokan Tel. 075-221-2188

7. A. Lange & Söhne "Richard Lange" x Bülow Palais (Germany)

The official A. Lange & Söhne hotel is the Bülow Palais in Dresden. Converted from an 18th-century residence, the hotel is classic in a good way. Its quiet location a little away from the tourist areas is also a plus. Its exclusive atmosphere, reminiscent of the A. Lange & Söhne brand, is a perfect match.

Any model would look great, but perhaps the simple Richard Lange stands out against the tranquil elegance of Dresden. The long second hand slowly rotates across the dial, matching the rhythm of the ancient city of Dresden. The antique shop across the street is a treasure trove of old Meissen and other items. Be careful, though, as no one speaks English, and it's unclear whether the shop is even open.

Richard Lange

A. Lange & Söhne "Richard Lange"
The three-hand Richard Lange is a watch that removes the chronograph mechanism from the masterpiece Datograph. The power reserve is limited to approximately 38 hours, as the focus is entirely on precision. The refined design is modeled after the high-precision deck watches made by A. Lange & Söhne. Although it may look plain at first glance, its very nature is that of a high-precision watch from the past. Manual winding (Cal. L041.2). 26 jewels. 21,600 vph. Power reserve approximately 38 hours. 18KWG case (40mm diameter, 10.5mm thick). Water resistant to 30m. 4,114,000 yen. (Inquiries) A. Lange & Söhne Tel. 03-4461-8080

Bureau Palais

Bureau Palais
The Bülow Palais was selected as one of the "25 Best Hotels in Germany" in 2021. It is a 1730 residence that has been renovated into a hotel. Although the building is old, the hotel is owned by the founding family of a construction company, so it has been meticulously restored. Perhaps because it is located in Dresden, where land prices are low, the spacious rooms are also an attraction. The attached restaurant, Karousel, is one of Dresden's most luxurious restaurants. However, with the chef changing after 2021, what will happen to the taste? Königstraße 14, 01097 Dresden. Prices vary depending on the time of year and room. 8. Cuervo y Sobrinos "Prominente Solotempo" x Pub and Cuisine Saloon (Hiroshima)

Hiroshima has a lot of delicious food, like dandan noodles and okonomiyaki. But if I had to pick just one, it would be the Cuban sandwich at Saloon. The owner, who is fascinated by Cuba, has recreated the famous Cuban sandwich.

Of course, the only watch I can choose to wear is Cuervo y Sobrinos, which originates from Cuba. Eating a Cuban sandwich and sipping a Corona beer in a flashy restaurant naturally puts me in a good mood. The next day, I'll head to Itsukushima and enjoy grilled oysters, and I'll be able to experience Hiroshima. It's a bit disappointing, however, that Cuervo's current models don't have red dials. Red is Hiroshima's color, after all. The Carp's team color is red, and Hiroshima's specialty dandan noodles are bright red, too.

Prominente Solo Tempo

Cuervo y Sobrinos "Prominente Solo Tempo"
Cuervo y Sobrinos has its roots in a famous Cuban shop. All of its models have a strong Latin influence, but the one that is most "Cuban" is the Prominente Solotempo, with its complex design. Its almost excessive, structural design is quite different from your average Swiss watch. If I had to choose, I'd go for the Havana-colored dial. Automatic (Cal. CYS 5103, based on the Soprod M100). 25 jewels. 28,800 vph. Stainless steel case (52mm x 33.75mm, 10mm thick). Water resistant to 50m. 495,000 yen (tax included). (Inquiries) Murakami Cuervo y Sobrinos Tel. 03-3273-0321

Pub and Cuisine Saloon

Pub and Cuisine Saloon
Pub and Cuisine Saloon, formerly the famous Hiroshima restaurant "BARBER BAR," is a unique establishment that combines a tailor, pub, and members-only barbershop. The owner, Mr. Isomi, is a sort of Hiroshima guide who also organizes events such as the Beard Festival. Fascinated by Cuba for some reason, he began serving authentic Cuban sandwiches, made with carefully marinated pork. The fish and chips, made with conger eel, a Hiroshima specialty, are also delicious. The Cuban sandwich is 1000 yen. 1-6 Hondori, Naka-ku, Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture (Inquiries) Tel. 082-258-1270

9. Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Master Chronometer x SpaceX

If a private citizen were to fly into space, the first thing they would wear would be a Speedmaster. Its exceptional magnetic resistance, high portability, and the peace of mind it offers, coupled with the fact that it's virtually unbreakable even when subjected to vibration, are irreplaceable. Yusaku Maezawa, who recently departed for space, reportedly took a Speedmaster with him. While the latest model hasn't passed NASA's tests, it's likely to perform well enough to pass.

Speedmaster Moonwatch Master Chronometer

"Speedmaster Moonwatch Master Chronometer"
A milestone in mechanical chronographs. The movement of the masterpiece Speedmaster Professional has been replaced with the Cal. 3861, which meets Master Chronometer standards. In addition to high shock resistance, it boasts theoretically excellent dynamic accuracy and ultra-magnetic resistance of 15,000 gauss (!). It is also approximately 20g lighter than its predecessor, dramatically improving wearing comfort. Manual winding (Cal. 3861). 26 jewels. 21,600 vph. Power reserve of approximately 50 hours. Stainless steel case (42mm diameter, 13.18mm thick). Water resistant to 50m. Price: 737,000 yen (tax included). (Inquiries) Omega Customer Service Tel. 03-5952-4400

SpaceX

©spacex
Space x
SpaceX, or Space Exploration Technologies, is an aerospace manufacturer and space transportation service provider led by Elon Musk. In September 2021, the company achieved the world's first manned space flight as a private company. SpaceX is currently planning the first privately-run trip around the moon. The cost of an Earth orbit flight is estimated at approximately 55 billion yen. (Inquiries) spacex.com

10. Montblanc "Montblanc 1858 Automatic 24H" x Gon Coffee Shop

Whether it's Nagano or Hokkaido, there are many good coffee shops in cold regions. One that you might say is rare even in the countryside is Ushitora Coffee Shop in Ohata, Aomori Prefecture. The reason it's constantly attracting customers is because of the great taste of its coffee. Buying a coffee here and taking a stroll around the Shimokita Peninsula will make you feel even more like you're traveling.

The watch I'm wearing is the Montblanc 1858 Automatic 24H. It's a rare 24-hour watch with a single hand these days. It's quite a niche watch, but with the Northern Hemisphere on the dial and the subtle luminous paint, it's rare to find a watch that gets you in the mood for travel as much as this one. If you're feeling blue, just wrap this watch around a pair of sturdy gloves, pop open the top of your convertible, and head out into the cold air of the Shimokita Peninsula.

Montblanc 1858 Automatic 24H

Montblanc "Montblanc 1858 Automatic 24H"
The watch we at Chronos Japan are proudly recommending is the Montblanc 1858 Automatic 24H. The dial features a single hand, which rotates once every 24 hours. While the hand's accuracy is exceptional, this watch is better suited to leisurely checking the time rather than precise timekeeping. The Northern Hemisphere depicted in the center of the dial glows softly in the dark. In keeping with modern Montblanc aesthetics, the exterior finish is exquisite, and the price is justified given its uniqueness and quality. A masterpiece brimming with the spirit of adventure. Automatic movement (Cal. MB 24.20). 25 jewels. 28,800 vph. Approximately 42-hour power reserve. Stainless steel and bronze alloy case (42mm diameter, 11.2mm thick). Water resistant to 100m. Price: ¥380,600 (tax included). (Inquiries) Montblanc Contact Center Tel. 0120-39-4810

Gon Coffee Shop

Gon Coffee Shop
Ushitora Coffee Shop is a micro-roaster located at the northernmost tip of Honshu. They follow the classic coffee shop philosophy of carefully roasting high-quality beans, properly brewing them, and serving them quickly. Many people take their coffee home, but it's also nice to sit on the bench in front of the shop and relax while sipping coffee. Good coffee is perfect for the cold weather. Their homemade baked goods are also highly rated. I ended up drinking about four cups of coffee. Coffee starts at 420 yen. 186-2 Matsunoki, Ohata-cho, Mutsu-shi, Aomori Prefecture (Inquiries) Ushitora Coffee Shop Tel. 090-8613-2501
