The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, the ancestor of modern divers, boasts high specs and a case with an exceptionally high level of finish for a diver's watch. The Fifty Fathoms Tourbillon 8 Days is a watch from this series that combines these two elements at a high level, and it is this watch that has mastered both.

Blancpain "Fifty Fathoms Tourbillon 8 Days"

The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, which debuted in 1953, is considered the prototype of the modern diver's watch, boasting high water resistance, a locking mechanism to prevent accidental rotation of the bezel, and anti-magnetic properties. Given its origins, each of the models to date has always been equipped with full-scale specifications that can withstand professional use.

This model features a flying tourbillon. The power reserve indicator from the previous model has been eliminated, resulting in a simpler design. It also features a free-sprung balance and three bridges supporting the carriage from the baseplate, highlighting consideration for shock resistance. In addition to the Ti case shown in the photo, an 18KRG case is also available. Automatic winding (Cal. 25C). 29 jewels. 21,600 vph. Power reserve of approximately 192 hours. Ti (diameter 45mm, thickness 14.8mm). Water resistant to 300m. 13,948,000 yen (tax included).

Despite its professional specs, the Fifty Fathoms has another side to it. It's a luxury watch with an exterior that's unusually elaborate for a diver's watch. The polished and satin finishes on the hot-forged case, combined with the high-quality texture of the domed sapphire crystal bezel, demonstrate that this is not simply a tool watch for use in harsh environments. The appeal of the Fifty Fathoms lies in the high level of coexistence between these two opposing characteristics: luxury and authentic diver's.

The Fifty Fathoms Tourbillon 8 Days, which underwent a model change at the end of last year, further refines these two elements in this collection. As its name suggests, this model is a Fifty Fathoms equipped with a flying tourbillon. The beautifully polished carriage gracefully rotates at the 12 o'clock position, revealing a delicate complication. It asserts itself as a luxury watch that goes beyond the boundaries of a diving tool.

The back of the bracelet. Each screw-fastened link can be disassembled. The grade 23 titanium used is more corrosion-resistant and hypoallergenic than the commonly used grade 5. This makes it ideal for both diver's watches and parts that come into close contact with the skin.

However, this model is not a "luxury sports watch," but rather a "luxury diver's watch." This is most clearly conveyed by the case and bracelet, which are made of medical-grade 23 titanium. The bracelet in particular is lightweight yet has just the right amount of rigidity, making it safe for sports use. Furthermore, all links are fastened with screws, so they can be completely disassembled. Even in a more luxurious direction, Fifty Fathoms has not given up on the pursuit of excellent maintainability, demonstrating its pride in luxury sports watches, the ancestor of modern divers.
