Piaget Polo's first high-complication watch

 Piaget's "Piaget Polo" collection is currently selling well. The combination of an integrated bracelet and a case that is sporty yet has the finishing touches of a luxury watch seems to match the demands of the current watch market, and it is particularly popular among relatively young people who are just beginning to take an interest in luxury watches.

 Indeed, the Piaget Polo was the brand's first collection to introduce a stainless steel case in a model change in 2016. By using a non-precious metal case, the collection is priced lower than other collections, and it also has a stylish design, so it's no wonder the Piaget Polo is attracting new customers.

Piaget Polo Movement

 Perhaps due to its character, the Piaget Polo has never had a model with a complicated mechanism until now. The lineup has consisted of only three types: the classic three-hand + date, chronograph, and skeleton.

 In other words, the Piaget Polo Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin, announced in February 2023, is Piaget Polo's first high-complication watch and will serve as the brand's flagship model.


A perpetual calendar with easy pusher operation

 The Piaget Polo Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin, Piaget Polo's first high-complication model, boasts not only a slim case but also excellent operability. The perpetual calendar allows the date to be set using the crown, while the other display functions can be advanced using the pushers (correctors) on the side of the case. All display elements can be adjusted independently.

 The key point here is that leap years can also be displayed independently, because a perpetual calendar needs to know not only what month and day it is, but also whether the year is a leap year or not.

 This means that on a clock where the leap year display cannot be adjusted independently, if the month display is accidentally advanced by one month, the month display must be advanced 47 months to reach the same month four years later.

 While there are many watches that allow you to adjust the date and month independently, perpetual calendars that can display leap years are currently rare. The Piaget Polo Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin's perpetual calendar is undoubtedly one of the most user-friendly.


Featuring a thin case typical of Piaget

Although I wrote that "operability is more attractive than a thin case," the case thickness of just 8.65mm is still appealing. For the Piaget Polo series, which has a design typical of luxury sports watches, a thin case is one of the essential elements. Of course, this doesn't change even for high-complication watches.

 However, perpetual calendars, which require the calendar mechanism to be mounted on the dial side, inevitably increase the vertical thickness.

 In addition, even if the perpetual calendar has four elements related to the calendar display alone - "day," "week," "month," and "leap year" - and no matter how easy it is to adjust, you don't want the watch to stop. For this reason, it is essential to have an automatic winding mechanism.

The key to the slim design is the Cal. 1255P, which inherits the lineage of the renowned Cal. 12P

 Piaget's solution to the challenge of making a perpetual calendar thinner is simple: mount the perpetual calendar module on a thin automatic movement.

 The base movement chosen is the thin automatic Caliber 1200P. It is Piaget's core movement, inheriting the lineage of the legendary automatic Caliber 12P, which was released in 1960. Released to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the birth of Caliber 12P, Caliber 1200P uses a micro-rotor to achieve a thickness of just 2.35mm.

 The Piaget Polo Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin is equipped with the Caliber 1255P, which adds a perpetual calendar module to the dial side, resulting in a case thickness of just 4mm. As a result, the watch has succeeded in keeping the case thickness to just 8.65mm while still being water resistant to 3 bar.

 The Piaget Polo collection has been dramatically expanded by adding the perpetual calendar, which is considered one of the most complex watch mechanisms.
