　This review focuses on the 30th anniversary model of the Frogman, the GW-8230NT-4JR, which attracted attention as G-SHOCK's first ISO-compliant diver's model. This model is based on the popular DW-8200NT, with its red exterior, and like the original model, this model also features a titanium case.

　I have a bit of a special attachment to the Frogman. I bought the Frogman DW-9900-8 over 20 years ago and used it for about 15 years. Like this watch, it has a titanium case, and I remember being intrigued by its texture, which is different from the stainless steel and aluminum we see every day, and being excited by its tough tool watch look.

　I wondered if the excitement of that time was just a memory, or if I would be able to feel it again in this work. It was with this feeling of unease that I began my impressions.

Titanium case that is robust enough to meet ISO standards while remaining lightweight

　The Frogman's distinctive feature is that it is a full-fledged diver's model that complies with ISO standards and is water resistant to 200m.

　The numerical specification of approximately 20 atmospheres of water resistance is also found in regular G-SHOCKs, but this model conforms to ISO standards and has a water resistance estimated to have a safety factor of more than 1.25 times. In addition, a stronger case is required to withstand the external forces stipulated in the standard.

　That's why they used a titanium case. To increase its strength, the case would need to be thicker, but it would be heavier. Perhaps they decided that using stainless steel would not balance the weight well with the G-SHOCK rubber strap, so they used titanium to balance the head.

　Frogman has been using titanium since the second generation Frogman "DW-8200," which served as the basis for this film, and I recall that they were relatively early adopters of titanium among G-SHOCK models, and when you think of Frogman, you think of the use of titanium.

　There are many other diver's watches besides G-SHOCK, and I believe that after considering the advantages of G-SHOCK over them, Casio decided to use titanium to create a lightness that stainless steel models lack. If this is the case, it shows that Casio has a good understanding of what users want and the image they have of G-SHOCK.

　In addition to the titanium case like this model, the current Frogman line also includes the GWF-A1000XC, which uses a carbon monocoque case, and is positioned as a collection that uses high-performance materials.

A design that combines the characteristics of Frogman and G-SHOCK

　The watch's exterior features an asymmetrical silhouette that protrudes from the 9 o'clock position, with claw-like exterior parts that appear to be gripping the case. The asymmetrical silhouette allows the large case to fit comfortably on the back of the hand. Other eye-catching features include large button guards that prevent accidental operation while diving.

　There is no end to the list of Frogman's design features, but there are plenty of essential elements that make fans, including myself, feel at a glance that "this is a Frogman series!"

　Since this is a reissue of the second-generation Frogman, the design code of the original DW-8200NT is still used to this day. At the same time, even if someone who isn't familiar with G-SHOCK sees this model, it has a consistent silhouette that makes it recognizable as a G-SHOCK.

　In this way, the fact that each lineup has a solid design code, yet does not deviate from the G-SHOCK design image, is a testament to G-SHOCK's skill in planning.

G-SHOCK's steady evolution of the exterior

　The exterior quality of G-SHOCK watches released in recent years has improved. This applies not only to metal models like the MRG-B5000, but also to plastic models like this one. While I haven't been able to check it all comprehensively, the edges and embossed letters have become sharper, starting with the DWE-5600CC, which I previously reviewed.

This is easy to see when you look at the sharpness of the letters "LIGHT" and "LOG DATA." Although not included in the design of this model, the letters are engraved deeper than in previous models, creating a clearer impression.

　These small improvements have resulted in a better overall appearance and a bolder impression. The bezel and band have been changed to biomass plastic to reduce the environmental impact, and there is no noticeable difference other than a firmer feel.

　Whether or not the exterior has been improved depends on when the model was released, so if you're having trouble deciding between several models, we recommend that you compare them in a store.
