The "Chronos Top 10 Watches Rankings," a reader-selected series, was launched in conjunction with a regular feature in the Japanese edition of Chronos. This time, the survey was conducted in a free-form format, with the theme of "Best of Watches & Wonders Geneva 2023." Here are the top five watches selected.
The much anticipated results are announced!
A regular feature of Chronos Japan is the "Chronos Top 10 Watches Rankings." A selection committee of watch experts chooses 10 recommended models for each given theme, and then determines the top 10 based on the most votes.
However, the rankings made by the judges, who are among the industry's leading watch experts, do not necessarily match the tastes and preferences of our magazine's readers. Therefore, webChronos uses a vote system to determine the rankings chosen by readers.
This project is held irregularly, but this time it was a change of pace. Instead of choosing from the 10 models usually selected by the Japanese edition of Chronos, participants were asked to choose one model based on a theme through free-form writing. This time, the theme was "Watches & Wonders Geneva 2023 Masterpiece Selection," and the results of the votes cast between April 15th and April 20th, 2023, were tallied.
5th place: Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Chronograph
To display the time on both sides of the dial, the watch features a mechanism that moves two sets of hour and minute hands in opposite directions, while remaining slim and boasting a power reserve of approximately 52 hours. Manual winding (Cal. 860). Power reserve: approximately 52 hours. 28,800 vibrations per hour. Stainless steel case (49.4mm x 29.9mm, 11.14mm thick). Water resistant to 30m. Price: 3,212,000 yen (tax included).
Coming in at number five is the Reverso Tribute Chronograph. This two-faced watch has an extremely simple dial on the front, but when you turn the case over, you can see the chronograph function through the skeletonized dial.
Equipped with the in-house caliber 860, it features offset center hour and minute hands and a chronograph second hand, as well as a retrograde 30-minute counter at 6 o'clock. It is designed to fit into the Reverso's distinctive rectangular case, and a horizontal clutch is used to reduce thickness.
4th place: Chopard Alpine Eagle 41 XPS
Automatic movement (Cal. LUC 96.40-L). 29 jewels. Power reserve approximately 65 hours. 28,800 vph. Lucent steel case (diameter 41mm, thickness 8.0mm). Water resistant to 100m. Estimated price: 3,267,000 yen (tax included).
Next up is the Alpine Eagle 41 XPS. Chopard's popular three-hand model, the Alpine Eagle 41, was equipped with the center rotor Caliber Chopard 01.01-C. In contrast, this model is equipped with the micro-rotor Caliber LUC 96.40-L, resulting in a slim and elegant design. The case is 8.0mm thick.
The case diameter is 41mm, the same as the Alpine Eagle's core size, and is made from sustainable Lucent Steel. The dial, which features a small second hand, is "Monterosa Pink," creating a modern and classic look.
3. Tudor Black Bay 54
Automatic (Cal. MT5400). 27 jewels. Power reserve approximately 70 hours. Stainless steel (diameter 37mm). Water resistant to 200m. Three-row bracelet model: 496,000 yen (tax included). Rubber strap model: 463,100 yen (tax included).
Coming in third place is the Black Bay 54. This model inherits elements from Tudor's first diver's watch, the Oyster Prince Submariner, while being updated with specifications suitable for modern times.
Equipped with the acclaimed caliber MT5400, it boasts a power reserve of approximately 70 hours and boasts high accuracy. It also features a "T-fit" quick-adjust clasp for easy length adjustment, ensuring practicality.
2. Rolex Perpetual 1908
Automatic winding (Cal. 7140). 38 jewels. 28,800 vph. Power reserve approximately 66 hours. 18K Yellow Gold (diameter 39mm, thickness 9.50mm). Water resistant to 50m. Price: 2,619,100 yen (tax included).
Coming in at a disappointing second place is Rolex's much talked about "Perpetual 1908." This model is part of a new collection inspired by early models that used the Perpetual rotor. The "1908" in the model name comes from the year the "Rolex" trademark was officially registered in Switzerland.
While retaining a form similar to the traditional Cellini collection, this dress watch incorporates new design codes. The transparent case back allows one to admire the new Caliber 7140 movement, decorated with Côtes de Genève stripes, and its 18K yellow gold automatic rotor.
1nd Place: IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40
Automatic movement (Cal. 32111). 21 jewels. Power reserve: approximately 120 hours. Stainless steel case (diameter 40mm, thickness 10.8mm). Water resistant to 10 bar. Price: 1,628,000 yen (tax included).
Taking the top spot is the IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40. This model, which is heavily influenced by the design by Gérald Genta from the 1970s, also inherits the anti-magnetic properties of the original Ingenieur.
The first Ingenieur, released in 55, is an iconic IWC model that features a soft iron inner case that provides magnetic resistance of 8 A/m. The name comes from the German and French words for "engineer," and as the name suggests, it was a watch aimed at engineers.
The Ingenieur SL's screw-down bezel, grid dial, and integrated H-link bracelet are reminiscent of the original, while the dial, available in four colors: black, silver-colored, aqua, and gray, features a unique pattern.
