The birth and history of the Speedmaster
Omega's Speedmaster is a series that has been loved by fans for 66 years since its release in 1957. Let's start by looking back at the history of the Speedmaster, starting from its birth.
The birth of the Professional Line

Omega's Professional line was born in 1957. The Speedmaster, Seamaster and Railmaster are the three collections that represent Omega today.
The Seamaster is aimed at divers exploring the ocean floor, the Railmaster is aimed at railway workers and engineers, and the Speedmaster was originally created as a racing model and was highly praised by motorsport and rally drivers.

The highly visible design, which made it easy to read the elapsed time, attracted the attention of racers and those involved in racing, and this design has been carried over to the current Speedmaster Racing.

The Speedmaster and Spaceflight History

After establishing itself as a racing model, the Speedmaster also attracted the attention of astronauts and space agencies. In 1962, Walter Schirra wore a Speedmaster when he took off into space on America's first manned space flight, Project Mercury.

In 1965, the Speedmaster underwent rigorous testing and was certified by NASA, and was deemed fit for space flight. It was also used in the moon landing in July 1969. It was given the name "Moonwatch" because it was worn on the moon.
This series is widely known as the watch worn by Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin, and continues to be chosen by many space agencies today.

Typical types of Speedmaster
The most representative model of the Speedmaster is the Moonwatch. Let's introduce the series that has a deep connection to space flight. If you have a fascination with the moon and space, this is the series you should get your hands on first.

The "Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8" was created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 8 mission, the first to orbit the moon, and will be updated in January 2024. It features a skeletonized version of the manual-winding movement Cal. 3861 used in the current Speedmaster Moonwatch, replaced with the Cal. 3869, featuring a black baseplate and bridges with a relief of the moon's surface. This makes it a Master Chronometer-certified watch, with magnetic resistance of up to 15,000 gauss.
